Surface field analysis of splitting of orbitals of atoms and ions approaching a metal surface.

The splitting of p- and d-orbitals of an atom or an ion which is caused by the locally varying potential near the surface of a realistic metal has been studied for bcc and fcc substrates. A quasi-ionic model is reasonable at close distance, inasmuch as the electron gas does not completely screen the ionic cores. The arrangement of ion cores near the surface causes the potential to vary in three dimensions. Expressions for energy levels were derived for an unsymmetric group using the quasi-ionic model and techniques used in the treatment of crystal field of nearest neighbors. A number of cases involving ions, as well as atoms in the vicinity of a metal substrate were numerically evaluated.

Determination of Burgers vectors in close-packed metals using g.b = 2 contrast.

Reexamination of dislocation images giving double contrast in the electron microscope for g.b = 2 as a possible means for Burgers vector determinations. In fcc foils which have been cut parallel to an active slip plane, the g.b = 2 criterion provides a quick positive Burgers vector analysis which can be carried out during observation. The method is also applicable to basal dislocations in hcp. A comparison between calculated two-beam profiles and experimental images in aluminum is discussed, and several commonly observed characteristics of g.b = 2 contrast are described.

Development of termination and utilization concepts for flat conductor cables. Volume 3: Cost study comparison, flat versus round conductor cable

A cost study comparing flat conductor cable (FCC) with small-gage wire (SGW) and conventional round conductor cable (RCC) is presented. This study was based on a vehicle wiring system consisting of 110,000 ft of conventional RCC equally divided between AWG sizes 20,22, and 24 using MIL-W-81044-type wire and MIL-C-26500 circular connectors. Basic cost data were developed on a similar-sized commercial jet airplane wiring system on a previous company R&D program in which advanced wiring techniques were carried through equivalent installations on an airplane mockup; and on data developed on typical average bundles during this program. Various cost elements included were engineering labor, operations (manufacturing) labor, material costs, and cost impact on payload. Engineering labor includes design, wiring system integration, wiring diagrams and cable assembly drawings, wire installations, and other related supporting functions such as the electronic data processing for the wiring. Operations labor includes mockup, tooling and production planning, fabrication, assembly, installation, and quality control cost impact on payload is the conversion of wiring system weight variations through use of different wiring concepts to program payload benefits in terms of dollars.

The influence of defects and impurities on the nucleation and growth of oriented films by evaporation

The influence of substrate imperfections on the nucleation and growth of fcc metals on alkali halides is discussed. Films deposited on well characterized substrated under well defined vacuum evaporation conditions are investigated. The experimental results of this work are correlated with similar work by other investigators. Models which have been proposed by various authors to explain experimental results are critically examined and areas of difficulty are pointed out. The influence of defects on nucleation rate and the orientation of the film is emphasized. Specific examples of impurity effects, irradiation effects and the influence of amorphous layers are discussed in detail. Evidence is shown that the formation of multiply twinned particles is a result of coalescence and growth. The only consistent model for the orienting influence of impurities is shown to be a chemical reaction effect. It is demonstrated that an alkali metal impurity is very likely responsible for the orienting influence of both water vapor exposure and irradiation. A negative result is found for the reported possibility of an orienting influence being transmitted through an amorphous layer.

Transition splices and cost comparison

The development and testing of two designs of transition splices are reported. The design goal was to produce splice terminations that are electrically insulated to withstand the environmental conditions of commercial aircraft and are capable of being repaired and reworked on installed cables with the use of hand tools. In addition, a cost study comparison of FCC vs. RCC is reported. The comparison was made on a basis of 10 aircraft with each vehicle using approximately 100,000 feet of wiring and 2,000 connectors. The results are tabulated for seven different wiring configurations.

Advanced wiring technique and hardware application: Airplane and space vehicle

An advanced wiring system is described which achieves the safety/reliability required for present and future airplane and space vehicle applications. Also, present wiring installation techniques and hardware are analyzed to establish existing problem areas. An advanced wiring system employing matrix interconnecting unit, plug to plug trunk bundles (FCC or ribbon cable) is outlined, and an installation study presented. A planned program to develop, lab test and flight test key features of these techniques and hardware as a part of the SST technology follow-on activities is discussed.

Theory of disordered Heisenberg ferromagnets

A Green's function technique is used to calculate the magnetic properties of Heisenberg ferromagnets in which the exchange interactions deviate randomly in strength from the mean interaction. Systems of sc, bcc, and fcc topologies and of general spin values are treated. Disorder produces marked effects in the density of spin wave states, in the form of enhancement of the low-energy density and extension of the energy band to higher values. The spontaneous magnetization and the Curie temperature decrease with increasing disorder. The effects of disorder are shown to be more pronounced in the ferromagnetic than in the paramagnetic phase.

Is nuclear matter a quantum crystal?

A possible alternative to the ordinary gas-like computation for nuclear matter is investigated under the assumption that the nucleons are arranged in a lattice. BCC, FCC and HCP structures are investigated. Only HCP shows a minimum in the energy vs. density curve with a modest binding energy of -1.5 MeV. The very low density limit is investigated and sensible results are obtained only if the tensor force decreases with the density. A study of the elastic properties indicates that the previous structures are mechanically unstable against shearing stresses.

Eutectic superalloys strengthened by delta Ni3Cb lamellae, and gamma prime, Ni3Al precipitates.

Bivariant eutectic alloys, located on a liquidus surface within the Ni-Cb-Cr-Al quaternary, were identified which permitted the production of aligned delta Ni3Cb lamellae within a nichrome matrix containing the fcc precipitate gamma prime Ni3Al. The volume fraction of delta and gamma prime could be varied significantly by compositional changes. After directional solidification certain alloys possessed improved ductility and corrosion resistance with respect to the Ni3Al-Ni3Cb eutectic, while their values of tensile and creep strength approached or exceeded those for the Ni3Al-Ni3Cb pseudobinary system. The mechanical properties of the directionally solidified alloy, Ni-19.7 wt % Cb-6.0 wt % Cr-2.5 wt % Al, were evaluated. Its longitudinal strength in tension and creep was found to be superior to all advanced nickel base superalloys. It is thus demonstrated that useful properties for gas turbine airfoil applications can be achieved by reinforcing a strong and tough gamma nichrome matrix containing precipitated gamma prime by a strong lamellar intermetallic compound having greater strength at elevated temperature.

Shock remagnetization associated with meteorite impact at planetary surfaces

The stages of a cratering event are considered together with four distinct magnetization volumes, taking into account the jetted material, the ejecta, the impact melt, and shock-compressed material which remains in situ. Shock classifications are discussed along with mineralogical aspects of shock remagnetization, the behavior of iron sulfides, defect cubic spinels, ilmenite-hematite series, the Fe-Ti-O system, alloys phases, and silicates. Remagnetization mechanisms considered include a first order reversible crystallographic transition in bcc iron-nickel, a second order Curie point transition in fcc iron-nickel, shock-induced anisotropy, and shock melting of iron containing silicates. Experimental results are reported together with a hypothetical crater model.
