The interaction of the solar wind with the interstellar medium

The expected characteristics of the solar wind, extrapolated from the vicinity of the earth are described. Several models are examined for the interaction of the solar wind with the interstellar plasma and magnetic field. Various aspects of the penetration of neutral interstellar gas into the solar wind are considered. The dynamic effects of the neutral gas on the solar wind are described. Problems associated with the interaction of cosmic rays with the solar wind are discussed.

Low-intensity optical emissions from the interstellar medium

Spectrometric scans of faint optical emissions from interstellar gas are reported. Systematic variations along the galactic plane in both the intensity and radial velocity of the galactic H alpha suggest that the diffuse emission is strongly associated with three nearby galactic spiral arms.

A satellite measurement of cosmic-ray abundances and spectra in the charge range 2 less than or equal to 7 less than or equal to 10

The composition of the nuclear component of the cosmic radiation was studied to yield information concerning the source, propagation, and confinement of cosmic rays within the galaxy. The first comprehensive satellite measurement is presented of cosmic-ray composition and spectra in the charge range 2 equal to or less than Z equal to or less than 10 using the geomagnetic field as a rigidity analyzer through the entire range of vertical cutoffs. The results indicate that the spectra of all the elements in the observed range are similar, and thus that various ratios of elemental abundances are nearly independent of rigidity over the range 2 equal to or less than P equal to or less than 15 GV. Calculations of the propagation of cosmic rays through the interstellar and interplanetary media predict that there should be a variation with rigidity of ratios of various elements, because of the charge-dependent effects of ionization of the interstellar gas by the cosmic rays. The absence of this variation can be explained by assuming a rigidity-dependent confinement of the cosmic rays in the galaxy.

Nuclear gamma rays from Li-7 in the galactic cosmic radiation.

The observation of a gamma-ray line feature from the direction of the galactic center by Johnson, Harnden, and Haymes is interpreted as the 478-keV nuclear de-excitation of low-energy Li-7 cosmic rays as they inelastically scatter from the interstellar gas. The prediction of an associated line at 432 keV is proposed as a definitive test of this idea.

On the interstellar CO/+//CO abundance ratio.

A search at high sensitivity for interstellar absorption in the 4250-A line of CO(+) yields negative results toward 14 stars, despite the pervasive presence of large amounts of CO in the interstellar gas. This result is in accord with theory, but still lacks by a large factor sufficient sensitivity to test any details of the theory.

A new model for cometary nuclei.

A new model for the nucleus of comets is presented, hypothesizing formation at large heliocentric distances from many independent solid bodies. It is shown that such a configuration would collapse to a single assemblage if it is to survive into the inner solar system. Prior to collapse, the bodies would be subject to coating by interstellar gas and particles, which would form the material lost into the coma at subsequent inner solar system perihelia. Quantitative estimates place an upper limit to the body sizes of 2.3 m and a lower limit of the number as 3 x 10 to the 10th power with sizes of a few tenths of a micron and numbers of about 10 to the 33rd power most probable. The major structural and evolutionary features of such comet nuclei are consistent with the Whipple icy-conglomerate model.

Measurement of cosmic ray positron and negatron spectra between 50 and 800 MeV

A balloon-borne magnetic spectrometer was used to measure the spectra of cosmic ray positrons and negatrons at energies between 50 and 800 MeV. Comparisons of the separate positron and negatron spectra observed near the earth with their expected intensities in interstellar space can be used to investigate the complex (and variable) interaction of galactic cosmic rays with the expanding solar wind. The present measurements, which have established finite values or upper limits for the positron and negatron spectral between 50 and 800 MeV, have confirmed earlier evidence for the existence of a dominant component of negatrons from primary sources in the galaxy. The present results are shown to be consistent with the hypothesis that the positron component is in fact mainly attributable to collisions between cosmic ray nuclei and the interstellar gas. The estimate of the absolute intensities confirm the indications from neutron monitors that in 1972 the interplanetary cosmic ray intensities were already recovering toward their high levels observed in 1965.

A new limit on the interstellar abundance of boron

Report of a new upper limit on interstellar boron in the direction of zeta Oph, obtained by making 25 scans across the B II resonance line at 1362.461 A with the Copernicus satellite. A B/H of about 7.6 times 10 to the negative 11th power or less was found, implying that boron in the interstellar gas is depleted by a factor of about 60 relative to boron in carbonaceous chondrites. These results are related to theories of the formation of grains, and the flux of cosmic rays.-

Selected Theoretical Studies Group contributions to the 14th International Cosmic Ray conference

The galactic distribution of H2 was studied through gamma radiation and through X-ray, optical, and infrared absorption measurements from SAS-2 and other sources. A comparison of the latitude distribution of gamma-ray intensity with reddening data shows reddening data to give the best estimate of interstellar gas in the solar vicinity. The distribution of galactic cosmic ray nucleons was determined and appears to be identical to the supernova remnant distribution. Interactions between ultrahigh energy cosmic-ray nuclei and intergalactic photon radiation fields were calculated, using the Monte Carlo method.

A survey with Copernicus of interstellar O VI absorption

The presence of broad, shallow absorptions caused by O VI ions were revealed from UV spectra observations recorded by the Copernicus satellite for thirty-two stars. A table lists survey data on the stars observed for which values of the O VI column densities or their upper limits are extracted. Interstellar rather than circumstellar origin is evident from observation of the lack of correspondence between radical velocities of the stars and those of the O VI profiles. The presence of a low-density high-temperature phase of interstellar gas produced by supernova explosions is suggested.

Interstellar clouds containing optically thick H2

Interstellar clouds containing optically thick H2 are investigated on the basis of the hypothesis that the population of the H2 rotational levels can be understood in terms of optical pumping in the Lyman and Werner bands. The observed populations are used to infer the densities and radiation fields within the clouds. The theoretical model adopted for an interstellar cloud and the analytical procedure are described. It is found that, of the 10 clouds studied, five are illuminated by a UV field appropriate to within a factor of two to that in the solar neighborhood, four appear to be near the stars against which they are observed, and one is irradiated by a very low intensity field. The results suggest that there are substantial pressure variations in the interstellar gas, even among those clouds not located near H II regions.

The HEAO A-2 experiment on the spatial and spectral structure of the X-ray sky /0.2-60 keV/

The HEAO A-2 experiment is described which is designed to observe the spectral and spatial structure of cosmic X-radiation over the entire sky with the minimum sensitivity and cross checks required to achieve a number of objectives. Developments in X-ray astronomy are discussed which are relevant to the experiment, including setting a lower limit on the number of discrete sources contributing to the background flux, determining the spatial dependence of the flux, observations of the spectral components of discrete sources, and the study of X-ray absorption by interstellar gas and the atmospheres of binary stars associated with pulsating X-ray sources. It is shown that systematics-free measurements will be made by making simultaneous observations of single sources with several detectors, by using two-layer detectors to eliminate the effects of electron contamination, and by incorporating magnets into low-energy detectors to minimize electron contamination.

A measurement of cosmic-ray positron and negatron spectra between 50 and 800 MV

A balloon-borne spark chamber magnetic spectrometer has been used to measure the spectra of cosmic-ray positrons and negatrons at energies between 50 and 800 MV. The data reported here were obtained during two flights from Fort Churchill, Manitoba, in July 1972. The present results indicate that the dominance of negatrons from primary sources, found in earlier experiments above 200 MV, extends down to at least 50 MV. Solar modulation of the positron component is found to be consistent with that of the total electron spectrum, assuming that the positron component is entirely attributable to collisions between cosmic-ray nuclei and the interstellar gas.

Interstellar helium flow experiment MA-088

The Apollo Soyuz Test Project Interstellar Helium Glow Experiment (MA-088) studied the motion of helium in the local interstellar medium as that medium passed through the solar system to determine several poorly known properties of the local interstellar gas. The instrument used was a photometer sensitive to two solar extreme ultraviolet spectral lines that are resonantly scattered by helium gas. The instrument surveyed the entire celestial sphere during a series of slow, rolling maneuvers by the Apollo spacecraft. The equipment operated properly, and usable data were obtained.

Diffuse galactic gamma ray lines

The origin and observability were studied of diffuse gamma ray line emission from the galaxy. It was found that such lines could be formed by nuclear excitation interactions of low energy cosmic rays with both interstellar gas and dust grains. The gamma ray emission lines from deexcitation of grain nuclei are sharp with Doppler widths of the order of 10 kev or less; the lines from gas nuclei are also relatively sharp with widths of the order of 100 kev for the most intense line; and the lines from cosmic ray nuclei are broad with widths of the order of several hundred kev. A detailed evaluation is presented of the production rate of the 4.44 Mev line for a variety of assumed cosmic ray spectra. Results are compared with reported galactic gamma ray line intensities and it is concluded that the measurements are consistent with a low energy cosmic ray density which increases toward the galactic center in proportion to the molecular gas density.

The cosmic-ray age deduced from the Be-10 abundance

Satellite measurements of the radioactive cosmic-ray species Be-10 are reported. The abundance was measured near 100 MeV per nucleon with high-resolution solid-state telescopes on the IMP-7 and IMP-8 satellites during 1973 and 1974. These two independent measurements yield Be-10/Be ratios of less than 10 percent. Taken together with a galactic propagation model, these results show that the cosmic-ray 'clock' lifetime (most probable value of the order of 20 million years) is significantly greater than that deduced for a nominal interstellar gas density of the order of 1 to 3 atoms per cu cm.
