(abstract) The IRAS All-Sky Survey: Scientific and Technical Lessons Learned

Although the Infrared Astronomy Satellite (IRAS) was launched over 10 years ago, the IRAS legacy of catalogs, images, and data archives remains a vital source of information on the infrared sky. Over 4000 papers in the refereed literature have used IRAS data, and this number continues to grow. IRAS has touched on almost all aspects of astronomy, from the solar system and the interstellar medium to the formation of stars and the formation of galaxies. In this talk I will give a brief overview of the scientific results from IRAS. I will also discuss some of the operational and technical lessons learned by IRAS that may be of relevance to the upcoming ISO mission, and to future missions that must be defined in an era of declining budgets for space science.

Assessment of ProgPy - An Open-Source Condition Monitoring and Diagnostics Tool

Traditional maintenance programs, such as corrective and preventive strategies, may lead to high costs and operational inefficiencies. Condition Monitoring and Diagnostics (CM&D) aims to improve these maintenance strategies by enabling timely insights into equipment health and performance. However, implementation of CM&D can be challenging without a robust framework that manages data efficiently, supports interoperability and simplifies integration. To address these challenges ProgPy, an open-source Python-based prognostics tool developed by NASA Ames Research Center, offers a structured solution for broader Prognostics and Health Management (PHM) applications. Ongoing research is assessing the feasibility of implementing ProgPy as a Condition Monitoring and Diagnostics (CM&D) solution by comparing its framework to the guidelines for open CM&D systems recommended in the ISO 13374-2 standard. This evaluation aims to highlight ProgPy’s strengths and identify opportunities for improvement, thereby, contributing to its advancement as an effective tool for Prognostics and Health Management (PHM). This paper presents the results of an initial assessment of the ProgPy toolbox through a gearbox case study using open-source datasets.

Auto-ignition of hydrocarbons behind reflected shock waves.

The paper reports on the study of auto-ignition of hydrocarbon-oxygen mixtures behind reflected shock waves. Because of their bearing on the problem of knock in internal combustion engines, n-heptane and iso-octane were chosen as the combustible species. Their stoichiometric mixtures with oxygen had to be diluted with 70% argon to reduce the influence of the boundary layer. Photographic records demonstrated the existence of two different modes of ignition, as has been previously established for the hydrogen-oxygen system. The pressure-temperature limits between these regions of mild and strong ignition were determined. From the same experimental tests, induction time data were obtained over the pressure range of 1-4 atm and the temperature interval of 1200-1700 K.

Ride evaluation in aerospace and surface vehicles

The vibration environment in a wide range of aerospace and surface vehicles is examined, and definitions related to ride evaluation are reviewed. Three provinces of research and application of ride data are recognized: (1) ride affecting passenger and operator comfort; (2) ride affecting human efficiency; and (3) ride affecting the health and safety of occupants occupationally or repeatedly exposed. Specific reference is made to the proposed ISO guide on human exposure to whole-body vibration. The applications as well as the advantages and limitations of this guide for evaluating vehicle ride are discussed. The derivation of the limits is reviewed with regard to the supporting data and the compromises necessary for wide applicability. Special discussions are included of the frequency and time dependence of these limits and approaches in progress for adjusting them according to different criteria of application.

Suitability of the rare-earth compounds Dy2Ti2O7 and Gd3Al5O12 for low temperature (4K-20K) magnetic refrigeration cycle

Measurements were made of the magnetic entropy and magnetization of powered samples of the compounds Dy2Ti2O7 and Gd3Al5O12. The magnetization was measured for temperatures at and below 4.2 K, in applied fields ranging to 7.0 tesla. Isothermal changes in magnetic entropy were measured for temperatures from 1.2 to 20 K, in applied fields up to 10 tesla. The results of the measurements are consistent with a doublet ground state for Dy2Ti2O7, and an eight-fold degenerate ground state for Gd3Al5O12. Absolute values of magnetic entropy have been obtained at the lower temperatures, permitting the isotherms to be properly located in the S-H plane with the use of adiabatic magnetization data. The iso-field lines in the S-T plane were determined. The results indicate that Dy2Ti2O7 can absorb a maximum of 71 + or - 4 joules/kg of heat at 4.2 K, while Gd3Al5O12 can absorb 233 + or - joules/kg at the same temperature. The large difference between the two is most likely a result of crystal field interactions in the dysoprosium compound. Both materials can be cycled adiabatically between 4.2 and 20 K.

An interdisciplinary analysis of multispectral satellite data for selected cover types in the Colorado Mountains, using automatic data processing techniques

The author has identified the following significant results. One capability which has been recognized by many geologists working with space photography is the ability to see linear features and alinements which were previously not apparent. To the exploration geologist, major lineaments seen on satellite images are of particular interest. A portion of ERTS-1 frame 1407-17193 (3 Sept. 1973) was used for mapping lineaments and producing an iso-lineament intersection map. Skylab photography over the area of prime area was not useable due to snow cover. Once the lineaments were mapped, a grid with 2.5 km spacing was overlayed on the map and the lineament intersections occurring within each grid square were counted and the number plotted in the center of the grid square. These numbers were then contoured producing a contour map of equal lineament intersection. It is believed that the areas of high intersection concentration would be the most favorable area for ore mineralization if favorable host rocks are also present. These highly fractured areas would act as conduits for carrying the ore forming solutions to the site of deposition in a favorable host rock. Two of the six areas of high intersection concentration are over areas of present or past mining camps and small claims are known to exist near the others. These would be prime target areas for future mineral exploration.

Analysis of atmospheric flow over a surface protrusion using the turbulence kinetic energy equation

Atmospheric flow fields resulting from a semi-elliptical surface obstruction in an otherwise horizontally homogeneous statistically stationary flow are modelled with the boundary-layer/Boussinesq-approximation of the governing equation of fluid mechanics. The turbulence kinetic energy equation is used to determine the dissipative effects of turbulent shear on the mean flow. Mean-flow results are compared with those given in a previous paper where the same problem was attacked using a Prandtl mixing-length hypothesis. Iso-lines of turbulence kinetic energy and turbulence intensity are plotted in the plane of the flow. They highlight regions of high turbulence intensity in the stagnation zone and sharp gradients in intensity along the transition from adverse to favourable pressure gradient.

Analysis of atmospheric flow over a surface protrusion using the turbulence kinetic energy equation with reference to aeronautical operating systems

Flow over surface obstructions can produce significantly large wind shears such that adverse flying conditions can occur for aeronautical systems (helicopters, STOL vehicles, etc.). Iso-lines of turbulence kinetic energy and turbulence intensity are plotted in the plane of the flow and highlight regions of high turbulence intensity in the stagnation zone and sharp gradients in intensity along the transition from adverse to favourable pressure gradient. Discussion of the effects of the disturbed wind field in CTOL and STOL aircraft flight path and obstruction clearance standards is given. The results indicate that closer inspection of these presently recommended standards as influenced by wind over irregular terrains is required.
