MFVI Energy Efficiency Audit Training - Module 1.1: Introduction to Efficient Lighting [Slides]

This guide is designed to help trained energy efficiency professionals conduct an energy efficiency audit for commercial and industrial buildings, particularly for micro-, small-, and medium-sized businesses in Mexico. This guide is focused on auditing lighting systems. As such, it will assist its user in determining the optimal lighting for a given space and then identifying the most efficient means of delivering that lighting.

The Los Angeles 100% Renewable Energy Study (LA100): Chapter 1. Introduction

The City of Los Angeles has set ambitious goals to transform its electricity supply, aiming to achieve a 100% renewable energy power system by 2045, along with aggressive electrification targets for buildings and vehicles. To reach these goals, and assess the implications for jobs, electricity rates, the environment, and environmental justice, the Los Angeles City Council passed a series of motions directing the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) to determine the technical feasibility and investment pathways of a 100% renewable energy portfolio standard. The Los Angeles 100% Renewable Energy Study (LA100) is a first-of-its-kind objective, rigorous, and science-based power systems analysis to determine what investments could be made to achieve these goals. The LA100 final report is presented as a collection of 12 chapters and an executive summary, each of which is available as an individual download. This chapter introduces the study.

An Introduction to Radiation Damage in Minerals and Ceramics [Slides]

Radiation effects in minerals and ceramics are quite distinct from effects observed in metals. This is largely due to interactions between radiation and the electronic structure of insulating materials that are unique compared to metallic conductors. Most notably, insulators exhibit property changes when energetic particles lose energy to electrons in the solid, whereas metals are unaffected by electronic energy losses. In addition, displacive radiation damage effects (atoms being knocked off their lattice sites by energetic particles) are much more complex in insulators, due to the complexities of their crystal structures (multiple cation and anion sublattices). In this presentation, we will focus on the atomistic mechanisms responsible for radiation damage in minerals and ceramics, when energetic particles lose energy while penetrating a solid. We will consider several examples, including (i) irradiation induced color center formation in gemstones; (ii) latent defects in alkali halides (relevance to thermoluminescent detectors); (iii) radioactive decay-induced amorphization of natural minerals; and (iv) extended defect formation and phase stability in complex oxides.

Neural network denoising of HED x-ray images, with an introduction to neural networks [Slides]

We created and trained a new neural network denoiser model using estimates of noise in the data. We showed that our denoiser significantly reduces the combined blur and noise on the training and testing set. We demonstrated the efficacy of neural network denoisers for reducing noise on HED x-ray images. Changes to network architecture and improvements to the noise model in training could improve the model.

Introduction to Fentanyl: What, Why, When, Where, How

This primer is designed to distill the subject of fentanyl and its analogs into simple terms. It is not an assessment. Its audience is the public, i.e., nonexperts that are curious about the topic. Therefore, the descriptions are broad rather than deep. As substantial information is available on fentanyl, our aim is to distill the information into a format that answers basic questions: What is fentanyl? Why is it dangerous? When is fentanyl most deadly? Where does it act in the body? How can its effect be mitigated? References and appendices are provided as supporting scientific information, and footnotes provide technical definitions.
