Treatise in Organic Geochemistry

Survey on organic geochemistry origins and use of gas-liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry analyses of organic components isolated from crude oils and sediments

GLC analysis of base composition of RNA and DNA hydrolysates

Various methods used for the analysis of the base composition of RNA and DNA hydrolysates are presented. The methods discussed are: (1) ion-exchange chromatography, (2) paper chromatography, (3) paper electrophoresis, (4) thin layer chromatography, (5) paper chromatography and time of flight mass spectrometry, and (6) gas-liquid chromatography. The equipment required and the conditions for obtaining the best results with each method are described.

GLC of amino acids - A survey of contamination.

Analyses of biological substances and geochemical samples, of both terrestrial and extraterrestrial origin, are reported for amino acids at the 1-10 nanogram per gram level achieved by gas-liquid and ion-exchange chromatographic methods. These studies have shown that nanogram quantities of amino acids, present in water extracts of geochemical samples or in other samples of low amino acid concentration, can be successfully determined only if the researcher is well aware of the possible sources of contamination.

Mass quantity gauging by RF mode analysis

Work done to date is reported concerning Radio Frequency Mass Quantity Gauging. Experimental apparatus has been designed and tested which measures the resonant frequencies of a tank in the time domain. These frequencies correspond to the total mass of fluid within the tank. Experimental results are discussed for nitrogen and hydrogen in normal gravity both in the supercritical state and also in the two phase (liquid-gas) region. Theoretical discussions for more general cases are given.

Leak testing

Leak-testing methods for gas and liquid systems are described. The physical principles of molecular, liquid, and gas flow; relations of leak-testing methods and instrumentation; and tracer gases used in testing vacuum systems are discussed.
