Frequency division multiplex technique

A system for monitoring a plurality of condition responsive devices is described. It consists of a master control station and a remote station. The master control station is capable of transmitting command signals which includes a parity signal to a remote station which transmits the signals back to the command station so that such can be compared with the original signals in order to determine if there are any transmission errors. The system utilizes frequency sources which are 1.21 multiples of each other so that no linear combination of any harmonics will interfere with another frequency.

Frequency division multiplexer code 04236, serial no. 001, phase 2

Design principles and test results of modifications to two wideband channels, 8 kHz DS located at 44kHz and 16 kHz SSB located at 104 kHz, are given. Data cover power supply modifications, wideband operational amplifiers, trade-off to determine requirements for precision components, printed circuit board layout, applicability of original equipment specification No. 110438, and optimum wideband channel design.

Capacity degradation due to interleaving and multiplexing

The capacity of an M-ary channel with N-ary coding is computed. It is found that the capacity of a very noisy channel is reduced by the factor (N-1)(log M)/(M-1)(log N). The results are applied to channels with noncoherent multifrequency shift keying and to concatenation of codes and interleaving.

Data system for multiplexed water-current meters

Flow rates at 32 flood plain locations are measured simultaneously by single digital logic unit with high noise immunity. Water flowing through pygmy current meters rotates element that closes electrical contact once every resolution, so flow rate is measured by counting number of closures in time interval.

Multiplexed fiber-optic transmission system

Digital, audio, and video data channels spanning 100 megahertz bandwidth are transmitted via single fiber-optical link. System is flexible by virtue of its plug-in modularity and optical patchboard that allows it to adjust to data and bandwidth changes.

Multiplexed battery-bypass control system

Cell-bypass control system senses low capacity cells before they overcharge or discharge. Relay automatically removes defective cell (when it is detected) from battery circuit. System shows promise for improving batteries in computer standby power systems, electric vehicles, and energy storage systems.

Optimum receiver structures for phase-multiplexed modulations

A MAP (maximum a posteriori) estimation loop is derived for a QPSK signal and, by suitable approximation to the nonlinearity which arises as a consequence of the MAP theory, is reconfigured with practical realizations that are valid for high and low SNRs. In particular, it is shown that by approximating the hyperbolic tangent nonlinearity in the MAP estimation loop by the first two terms in its power series, an interesting practical realization of this loop results which applies at low SNRs. The error signal in this loop is formed by multiplying the error signal and lock detector output signal of a conventional biphase Costas loop. A generalized linear in-phase channel configuration is proposed which allows carrier reconstruction from an unbalanced QPSK signal at all ratios of data rates and powers in the two channels, even in the limit as these ratios simultaneously approach unity, i.e., balanced quadriphase.

Multiplexed logic controls solar-heating system

Four inexpensive thermocouples monitor temperatures at key points. On command from logic circuitry, dampers open and close to direct airflow, and fan and auxiliary heater shut on or off. Controlling complex arranges heating system in any one of four operating configurations.

Radiographic applications of spatial frequency multiplexing

The application of spacial frequency encoding techniques which allow different regions of the X-ray spectrum to be encoded on conventional radiographs was studied. Clinical considerations were reviewed, as were experimental studies involving the encoding and decoding of X-ray images at different energies and the subsequent processing of the data to produce images of specific materials in the body.

Correlation spectrometer having high resolution and multiplexing capability

A correlation spectrometer permanently incorporates a reference cell and an electro-optical phase modulator (EOPM) in the light path between a sample cell and a detector. The effect of the EOPM is such that its frequency modulates all of the monochromatic component of the incoherent radiation passing through it. The EOPM is adjusted so that when it is ON all of the energy in the monochromatic components is thrown into sidebands differing from the original frequencies by integral multiples of the modulation frequency with the total amount of energy absorbed from the original radiation remaining constant. When there is no coincidence between the constituents in the two cells, the detector's output is the same when the EOPM is ON and when it is OFF. However, when there is coincidence the detector's output changes when the EOPM is switched between its two states. The change in the detector's output is related to the quantity of the constituents in the sample cell.

Multiplex electric discharge gas laser system

A multiple pulse electric discharge gas laser system is described in which a plurality of pulsed electric discharge gas lasers are supported in a common housing. Each laser is supplied with excitation pulses from a separate power supply. A controller, which may be a microprocessor, is connected to each power supply for controlling the application of excitation pulses to each laser so that the lasers can be fired simultaneously or in any desired sequence. The output light beams from the individual lasers may be combined or utilized independently, depending on the desired application. The individual lasers may include multiple pairs of discharge electrodes with a separate power supply connected across each electrode pair so that multiple light output beams can be generated from a single laser tube and combined or utilized separately.

Fiber optics wavelength division multiplexing(components)

The long term objectives are to develop optical multiplexers/demultiplexers, different wavelength and modulation stable semiconductor lasers and high data rate transceivers, as well as to test and evaluate fiber optic networks applicable to the Space Station. Progress in each of the above areas is briefly discussed.

Evaluation of a far infrared Ge:Ga multiplexed detector array

The performance of a multielement Ge:Ga linear array under low-background conditions is investigated. On-focal plane switching is accomplished by MOSFET switches and the integrated charge is made available through MOSFET source followers. The tests were conducted at 106 microns and the radiation on the detectors was confined to a spectral window 1.25 microns wide using a stack of cold filters. At 4.2 K, the responsivity was measured to be nominally 584 A/W, and the NEP was 1.0 x 10 exp -16 W/sq rt Hz. A detailed description of the test setup and the procedure is presented.

Multiplexing electro-optic architectures for advanced aircraft integrated flight control systems

This report describes the results of a 10 month program sponsored by NASA. The objective of this program was to evaluate various optical sensor modulation technologies and to design an optimal Electro-Optic Architecture (EOA) for servicing remote clusters of sensors and actuators in advanced aircraft flight control systems. The EOA's supply optical power to remote sensors and actuators, process the modulated optical signals returned from the sensors, and produce conditioned electrical signals acceptable for use by a digital flight control computer or Vehicle Management System (VMS) computer. This study was part of a multi-year initiative under the Fiber Optic Control System Integration (FOCSI) program to design, develop, and test a totally integrated fiber optic flight/propulsion control system for application to advanced aircraft. Unlike earlier FOCSI studies, this program concentrated on the design of the EOA interface rather than the optical transducer technology itself.
