ENDF/B-VIII.1 Validation (Preliminary Release 2 + New 239 Pu)

This document should serve as a reference for validation testing of nuclear data files included in the second preliminary release of ENDF/B-VIII.1 and the newly evaluated 239 Pu nuclear data file to be included in the third preliminary release of ENDF/B-VIII.1. Experiment names listed in this report are based on International Criticality Safety Benchmark Evaluation Project (ICSBEP) Handbook designations. Additional information on ICSBEP handbook designations can be found at https://www.oecd-nea.org/jcms/pl_20291/icsbep-handbook. The validation metrics used in this report include the effective neutron multiplication factor, k eff , and tritium production. All validation metrics were calculated using the radiation transport code Monte Carlo N-Particle (MCNP).

Materials genome innovation for computational software (magics) center

Functional layered material (LM) architectures will dominate nanomaterials science in this century. We have developed theory, modeling, simulation, and software and data tools that enhance understanding and AI guide synthesis, enable characterization of complex structures, and improve capabilities in the predictive design and growth of LMs. Research at the Center has focused on: Computational synthesis and characterization: AI guided synthesis and experimental synthesis of stacked LMs with tailored properties via optimized chemical vapor deposition (CVD) growth and liquid-phase exfoliation; study defects, edges, grain boundaries, wrinkling of atomic layers and their effects on chemical, mechanical, electrical, and optical properties. Far-from-equilibrium processes: Joint experimental and simulation based probe of electronic processes with NAQMD and ultrafast X-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) and ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) facilities at Stanford. Experimentally validate NAQMD by ultrafast electron diffraction and X-ray spectroscopy studies of structural and excited state dynamics, shape fluctuations, and phonon dynamics. Scalable software: Simulation engines for desktop-to-exascale platforms using low-overhead, linear-scaling QMD algorithms; divide-conquer-recombine NAQMD with electronic excitations; extended-Lagrangian reactive molecular dynamics (RMD), machine learning (ML) based neural-network quantum molecular dynamics (NNQMD), and super-state accelerated molecular dynamics (AMD) and kinetic Monte Carlo codes; thermal and electrical transport software; and design 3D architectures of LMs with desired functionality using scalable software. Distribution of software and data, and training: Software and simulation-experimental data generated within the Center are distributed to the materials science community via Berkeley Materials Project (MP) framework. We have also organized three workshops for software distribution and training at USC (Nov. 2017, Mar. 2018) and Gaithersburg, MD (Nov. 2018) to train researchers, with the last one in focused on underrepresented groups, in collaboration with Howard University which is one of the largest HBCUs. The Center supported a total of 46 personnel and 6 undergraduate students. These include 14 faculty, 11 postdoctoral research associates, 20 graduate research assistants, and mentored 6 undergraduate students. This resulted in the publications of 63 research papers that include 46 publications on Reactive and Quantum Dynamics Simulations, 13 publications on Machine Learning for Quantum Materials, and 4 publications on Quantum Computing.

Optimization Studies of Radiation Shielding for PIP-II Project at Fermilab

The Proton Improvement Plan-II (PIP-II) at Fermilab represents a significant advancement in the quest to answer some of the most profound questions about our universe using the world's most intense high-energy neutrino beam. The project requires the construction of a new addition to the Fermilab accelerator complex – an 800-MeV high-intensity superconducting linear accelerator. Ensuring the safety and regulatory compliance of this ambitious project is paramount, necessitating thorough dose rate assessments under both normal operational and accidental scenarios to align with the Fermilab Radiological Control Manual (FRCM) standards. Our approach included a shielding optimization used for the simulations with the Monte Carlo code MARS [1,2,3] to incorporate new magnet and collimator designs, essential for reflecting the current state of PIP-II infrastructure. The implementation of high-resolution detector planes, despite their computational demands, enabled us to gather detailed radiation field data crucial for optimizing shielding configurations. To overcome the significant computational demands, we developed a branching code that drastically reduced simulation runtimes while maintaining statistical integrity. This was achieved through geometry splitting and the application of Russian Roulette techniques, tailored to prioritize regions of interest based on predefined importances and weight limits.

Neutronics Enhanced Meshing Operations (NEMO) Users Manual V.1.0

The is a Python framework developed at Idaho National Laboratory that uses the Cubit Python to build Cubit models and export them in EXODUS II format. These EXODUS mesh files can be used by any -based application, but NEMO is specialized for coupled neutronics calculations. Therefore, the primary purpose of NEMO is to prepare mesh files for reactor geometries and generate a homogenization overlay file for the Serpent Monte Carlo code. This homogenization overlay file ensures the consistency of the mesh with the generation of homogenized cross sections and reference fluxes for the Superhomogenization method. NEMO also supports the preparation of mesh files for thermal and thermo-mechanical models, particularly the discontinuous finite element gap heat transfer model in Griffin. This manual introduces the user to the basic capabilities in NEMO for prismatic geometries.

Modeling Enhancements, Cross-Section Generation Updates, and Benchmarking with Shift

This technical report documents the modeling enhancements, cross-section generation updates, and bench marking with the Shift Monte Carlo code performed under the US Department of Energy Nuclear Energy Advanced Modeling and Simulation Program in FY 2024. The work performed included several modeling enhancements, such as integration of cross-section generation in Titan and the ability to produce microscopic multigroup cross sections with Shift. Benchmarking of the cross sections produced by Shift and the two-step workflow with Griffin was performed for three problems: the Advanced Breeder Test Reactor, a generic pebble bed reactor, and a TRISO heat pipe microreactor. Comparisons of results from these benchmark problems were done with Serpent, OpenMC, and Griffin. These enhancements provide a robust foundation for applying Shift for both reference and two-step neutronics analysis for advanced reactor simulation.

A Streamlined, Open Source Neutronics Toolkit for Fusion Reactor Design (Final Report)

Final report for the DOE Fusion Energy Sciences project titled "A Streamlined, Open Source Neutronics Toolkit for Fusion Reactor Design". This project developed unstructured mesh tracking capabilities in OpenMC as well as two shutdown dose rate methodologies, and performed extensive performance improvements and validation of the open source Monte Carlo code, OpenMC.

Development of an Advanced Multiphysics Simulation Capability for Radiant's Microreactor Design

Argonne National Laboratory and Idaho National Laboratory, through a Department of Energy Gateway for Accelerated Innovation in Nuclear Voucher, supported key analysis needs of Radiant related to (i) air jacket thermal fluid performance, (ii) evaluation of decay heat source terms defining air jacket technical requirements, and (iii) assessment of modeling methodologies employed for core analysis. All of these activities center on numerical simulation of various aspects of Kaleidos using the Multiphysics Object-Oriented Simulation Environment (MOOSE) framework, the Cardinal multiphysics application, the OpenMC Monte Carlo code, and the Nek5000 computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code. This project builds upon an earlier Nuclear Energy Advanced Modeling and Simulation (NEAMS) Thermal-Hydraulic (T/H) Center of Excellence (CoE) project focused on initial demonstration of Cardinal multiphysics simulation of High Temperature Gas Reactors (HTGRs) and now focuses on Radiant’s Kaleidos concept.

An Approach for Simulating Transport of Nonspherical, Sublimating Particles in Rarefied Gas Flows via the Direct Simulation Monte Carlo Method

This paper extends the particle Green’s function approach of Gallis et al. [Phys. Fluids 13, 3482–3492 (2001)] to compute the force and heat transfer on nonspherical, sublimating particles in rarefied gas flows. Green’s functions are derived for rods and plates, which are representative of ice particle shapes, and a numerical procedure is developed for computing the Green’s functions for a general discretized convex shape. Additionally, a sublimation model is developed to simulate the evolution of ice particles in rarefied gas flows. These models are implemented in a direct simulation Monte Carlo code and demonstrated for the case of ice-particle-laden hypersonic flow over a ramp.

Neutronic Characteristics of ENDF/B-VIII.0 Compared to ENDF/B-VII.1 for Light-Water Reactor Analysis

The Evaluated Nuclear Data File (ENDF)/B-VIII.0 data library was released in 2018. To assess the new data during development and shortly after release, many validation calculations were performed with static, room-temperature benchmarks. Recently, when performing validation of ENDF/B-VIII.0 for pressurized water reactor depletion calculations, a regression in performance compared to ENDF/B-VII.1 was observed. This paper documents extensive benchmark calculations for light-water reactors performed using continuous energy Monte Carlo code with ENDF/B-VII.1 and -VIII.0 and neutronic characteristics of ENDF/B-VIII.0 are discussed and compared to those of ENDF/B-VII.1. It is our recommendation that ENDF/B data library assessment should include reactor-specific benchmark assessments, including depletion cases, such that these types of regressions may be caught earlier in the data development cycle.

Pulsed-Neutron Experiments at the Inherently Safe Subcritical Assembly

The pulsed neutron technique is a powerful, dynamic method to assay the reactivity of a multiplying system. This work presents the novel application of the pulsed neutron technique to the Inherently Safe Subcritical Assembly, an experimental configuration accepted by the International Criticality Safety Benchmark Evaluation Project Handbook. The experiments were replicated with COG11.3, a continuous-energy Monte Carlo code. The pulsed neutron data were analyzed using the Sjöstrand and Gozani area-ratio methods and by extracting the prompt neutron decay constant. Subsequent static k-eigenvalue and 𝛼-eigenvalue simulations were also performed for the same configurations. Neutron detector dead-time effects from the experiments were corrected using the Backwards Extrapolation Method and shown to have a negligible impact on the estimated reactivities. The results highlight that capturing time-dependent effects like delayed neutron precursor buildup are essential to accurately reproduce experimental results. They also highlight the importance of shielding the detectors from generator source neutrons in deeply subcritical configurations.

Axisymmetric Radiative Transfer Models of Kilonovae

The detailed observations of GW170817 proved for the first time directly that neutron star mergers are a major production site of heavy elements. The observations could be fit by a number of simulations that qualitatively agree, but can quantitatively differ (e.g., in total r-process mass) by an order of magnitude. We categorize kilonova ejecta into several typical morphologies motivated by numerical simulations, and apply a radiative transfer Monte Carlo code to study how the geometric distribution of the ejecta shapes the emitted radiation. We find major impacts on both spectra and light curves. The peak bolometric luminosity can vary by two orders of magnitude and the timing of its peak by a factor of five. These findings provide the crucial implication that the ejecta masses inferred from observations around the peak brightness are uncertain by at least an order of magnitude. Mixed two-component models with lanthanide-rich ejecta are particularly sensitive to geometric distribution. A subset of mixed models shows very strong viewing angle dependence due to lanthanide "curtaining," which persists even if the relative mass of lanthanide-rich component is small. The angular dependence is weak in the rest of our models, but different geometric combinations of the two components lead to a highly diverse set of light curves. We identify geometry-dependent P Cygni features in late spectra that directly map out strong lines in the simulated opacity of neodymium, which can help to constrain the ejecta geometry and to directly probe the r-process abundances.

Model Light Curves for Type Ib and Ic Supernovae

Using the Monte Carlo code SEDONA, multiband photometry and spectra are calculated for supernovae derived from stripped helium stars with presupernova masses of 2.2 to 10.0 M ⊙ . The models are representative of evolution in close binaries and have previously been exploded using a parameterized one-dimensional model for neutrino transport. A subset, those with presupernova masses in the range of 2.2–5.6 M⊙, have many properties in common with observed Type Ib and Ic supernovae, including a median ejected mass near 2 M ⊙ , explosion energies near 1 × 10 51 erg, typical 56 Ni masses of 0.07–0.09 M ⊙ , peak times of about 20 days, and a narrow range for the V - R color index 10 days post-V-maximum near 0.3 mag. The median peak bolometric luminosity, near 10 42.3 erg s -1 , is fainter, however, than several observational tabulations, and the brightest explosion has a bolometric luminosity of only 10 42.50 erg s -1 . The brightest absolute B, V, and R magnitudes at peak are -17.2, -17.8, and -18.0. These limits are fainter than some allegedly typical Type Ib and Ic supernovae and could reflect problems in our models or in the observational analysis. Helium stars with lower and higher masses also produce interesting transients that may have been observed, including fast, faint, blue transients and long, red, faint Type Ic supernovae. New models are specifically presented for SN 2007Y, SN 2007gr, SN 2009jf, LSQ 13abf, SN 2008D, and SN 2010X.

Exosphere Modeling of Proxima b: A Case Study of Photochemical Escape with a Venus-like Atmosphere

Exoplanets orbiting M dwarfs within habitable zones are exposed to stellar environments more extreme than that terrestrial planets experience in our solar system, which can significantly impact the atmospheres of the exoplanets and affect their habitability and sustainability. This study provides the first prediction of hot oxygen corona structure and the associated photochemical loss from a 1 bar CO 2 -dominated atmosphere of a Venus-like rocky exoplanet, where dissociative recombination of O 2 + ions is assumed to be the major source reaction for the escape of neutral O atoms and formation of the hot O corona (or exospheres) as on Mars and Venus. We employ a 3D Monte Carlo code to simulate the exosphere of Proxima Centauri b (PCb) based on the ionosphere simulated by a 3D magnetohydrodynamic model. Our simulation results show that variability of the stellar wind dynamic pressure over one orbital period of PCb does not affect the overall spatial structure of the hot O corona but contributes to the change in the global hot O escape rate that varies by an order of magnitude. The escape increases dramatically when the planet possesses its intrinsic magnetic fields as the ionosphere becomes more extended with the presence of a global magnetic field. Furthermore, the extended hot O corona may lead to a more extended H exosphere through collisions between thermal H and hot O, which exemplifies the importance of considering nonthermal populations in exospheres to interpret future observations.

MORSE Monte Carlo shielding calculations for the zirconium hydride reference reactor

Verification of DOT-SPACETRAN transport calculations of a lithium hydride and tungsten shield for a SNAP reactor was performed using the MORSE (Monte Carlo) code. Transport of both neutrons and gamma rays was considered. Importance sampling was utilized in the MORSE calculations. Several quantities internal to the shield, as well as dose at several points outside of the configuration, were in satisfactory agreement with the DOT calculations of the same.

Monte Carlo Simulation of Nonlinear Radiation Induced Plasmas

A Monte Carlo simulation model for radiation induced plasmas with nonlinear properties due to recombination was, employing a piecewise linearized predict-correct iterative technique. Several important variance reduction techniques were developed and incorporated into the model, including an antithetic variates technique. This approach is especially efficient for plasma systems with inhomogeneous media, multidimensions, and irregular boundaries. The Monte Carlo code developed has been applied to the determination of the electron energy distribution function and related parameters for a noble gas plasma created by alpha-particle irradiation. The characteristics of the radiation induced plasma involved are given.
