Polymorphism in the Ruddlesden–Popper Nickelate La 3 Ni 2 O 7 : Discovery of a Hidden Phase with Distinctive Layer Stacking

We report the discovery of a novel form of Ruddlesden–Popper (RP) nickelate that stands as the first example of long-range, coherent polymorphism in this class of inorganic solids. Rather than the well-known, uniform stacking of perovskite blocks ubiquitously found in RP phases, this newly discovered polymorph of the bilayer RP phase La 3 Ni 2 O 7 adopts a novel stacking sequence in which single-layer and trilayer blocks of NiO 6 octahedra alternate in a “1313” sequence. Crystals of this new polymorph are described in space group Cmmm, although we note evidence for a competing Imam variant. Transport measurements at ambient pressure reveal metallic character with evidence of a charge density wave transition with an onset at T ≈ 134 K. In conclusion, the discovery of such polymorphism could reverberate to the expansive range of science and applications that rely on RP materials, particularly the recently reported signatures of superconductivity in bilayer La 3 Ni 2 O 7 with T c as high as 80 K above 14 GPa.

TiSe 2 is a band insulator created by lattice fluctuations, not an excitonic insulator

TiSe 2 is a narrow-gap insulator with a rich array of unique properties. In addition to being a superconductor under certain modifications, it is commonly thought to be a rare realisation of an excitonic insulator. Below 200 K, TiSe 2 undergoes a transition from a high-symmetry ($P\bar{3}m1$) phase to a low-symmetry ($P\bar{3}c1$) charge density wave (CDW). Here we establish that it is indeed an insulator in both $P\bar{3}m1$ and $P\bar{3}c1$ phases. However, the insulating state is driven not by excitonic effects but by symmetry-breaking. In the CDW phase it is static. At high temperature, thermally driven instantaneous deviations from $P\bar{3}m1$ break the symmetry on the characteristic time scale of a phonon. Even though the time-averaged lattice structure assumes $P\bar{3}m1$ symmetry, the time-averaged energy band structure is closer to the CDW phase - a rare instance of a metal-insulator transition induced by dynamical symmetry breaking. We establish these conclusions from quasiparticle self-consistent GW (QSGW) and many-body calculations (QS$G\widehat{W}$), in combination with molecular dynamics simulations to capture the effects of thermal disorder. The many-body theory includes explicitly ladder diagrams in the polarizability, which incorporates excitonic effects in an ab initio manner. We find that the excitonic modification to the potential is weak, ruling out the possibility that TiSe 2 is an excitonic insulator.

Tetragonal BaCoO 3 : A Co 4+ Ferromagnetic Mott Insulator

We report the stabilization of the metastable body-centered tetragonal (BCT) phase of BaCoO 3 (BCT-BaCoO 3 ) under high-pressure (15 GPa) and hightemperature (1200 °C) conditions using a mixture precursor. This double perovskite adopts the EuTiO 3 -type structure (space group I4/mcm), as confirmed by powder Xray diffraction and high-resolution STEM. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicates a predominant Co 4+ oxidation state without detectable oxygen vacancies. Magnetization and heat capacity measurements reveal ferromagnetic ordering at T C ∼ 107 K, attributable to the BCT-BaCoO 3 phase. Above this temperature, the mixed-phase sample exhibits Curie−Weiss paramagnetism, a low-spin to high-spin crossover upon cooling, and a possible intermediate-spin state at elevated temperatures. Resistivity data indicates insulating behavior with weak magnetoresistance. DFT and DFT + DMFT calculations suggest that the insulating state originates from an orbitally selective transition sensitive to the nominal valence of the Co-d shell. The metastable BCT-BaCoO 3 phase cannot be retained in pure form at ambient pressure but can be stabilized by embedding it in a disordered mixture, offering a potential route to discover and preserve other high-pressure phases under ambient conditions.

Synthesis and Stability of an Eight‐Coordinated Fe 3 O 4 High‐Pressure Phase: Implications for the Mantle Structure of Super‐Earths

Abstract Super‐Earths ranging up to 10 Earth masses (M E ) with Earth‐like density are common among the observed exoplanets thus far, but their measured masses and radii do not uniquely elucidate their internal structure. Exploring the phase transitions in the Mg‐silicates that define the mantle‐structure of super‐Earths is critical to characterizing their interiors, yet the relevant terapascal conditions are experimentally challenging for direct structural analysis. Here we investigated the crystal chemistry of Fe 3 O 4 as a low‐pressure analog to Mg 2 SiO 4 between 45–115 GPa and up to 3000 K using powder and single crystal X‐ray diffraction in the laser‐heated diamond anvil cell. Between 60–115 GPa and above 2000 K, Fe 3 O 4 adopts an 8‐fold coordinated Th 3 P 4 ‐type structure ( I ‐43d, Z = 4) with disordered Fe 2+ and Fe 3+ into one metal site. This Fe‐oxide phase is isostructural with that predicted for Mg 2 SiO 4 above 500 GPa in super‐Earth mantles and suggests that Mg 2 SiO 4 can incorporate both ferric and ferrous iron at these conditions. The pressure‐volume behavior observed in this 8‐fold coordinated Fe 3 O 4 indicates a maximum 4% density increase across the 6‐ to 8‐fold coordination transition in the analog Mg‐silicate. Reassessment of the FeO—Fe 3 O 4 fugacity buffer considering the Fe 3 O 4 phase relationships identified in this study reveals that increasing pressure and temperature to 120 GPa and 3000 K in Earth and planetary mantles drives iron toward oxidation.

Light-Induced Transient Lattice Dynamics and Metastable Phase Transition in CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 Nanocrystals

In this study, methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI 3 ) perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) offer desirable optoelectronic properties with prospective utility in photovoltaics, lasers, and light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Structural rearrange-ments of MAPbI 3 in response to photoexcitation, such as lattice distortions and phase transitions, are of particular interest, as these engender long carrier lifetime and bolster carrier diffusion. Here, we use variable temperature X-ray diffraction (XRD) and synchrotron-based transient X-ray diffraction (TRXRD) to investigate lattice response following ultrafast optical excitation. MAPbI 3 NCs are found to slowly undergo a phase transition from the tetragonal to a pseudocubic phase over the course of 1 ns under 0.02-4.18 mJ/cm 2 fluence photoexcitation, with apparent nonthermal lattice distortions attributed to polaron formation. Lattice recovery exceeds time scales expected for both carrier recombination and thermal dissipation, indicating meta-stability likely due to the proximal phase transition, with symmetry-breaking along equatorial and axial directions. These findings are relevant for fundamental understanding and applications of structure-function properties.

Structural and chemical disorder enhance point defect diffusion and atomic transport in Ni 3 Al-based γ' phase

The ordered L1 2 γ' Ni 3 Al intermetallic inclusions are routinely used as strengthening constituents in Ni-based superalloys and recent high-entropy alloys. As there are different metallic elements relative to the alloy matrix, the composition of γ' phase inclusions usually suffers some variations. In this work, we studied the elemental partition and its influence on atomic transport properties in a model (NiCo) 3 Al γ' phase with chemical and structural disorder. Combining the Monte Carlo and molecular static techniques, we first determined the elemental distribution in such compositionally-complexed γ' phase. The results suggest that Co tends to segregate, which profoundly influences defect energetics and diffusion properties. By modeling thermally activated diffusion by molecular dynamics, we found that chemical disorder induced by Co can enhance vacancy diffusion while significantly suppress diffusion via interstitial atom migration, as compared to the stoichiometric γ' Ni 3 Al. We further reveal that these observations are closely related to the defect energetics in these systems. Furthermore, our results explain the effects of disorder, long- and short-range orders on the diffusion properties in multicomponent intermetallic alloys, which helps to understand the stability and, thus, γ'-phase-assisted strengthening at different conditions including annealing and irradiation.

Bulk nanocrystalline Al–Mg–Y alloys with amorphous grain boundary complexions display high strength and compressive plasticity

Although nanocrystalline alloys regularly exhibit high strengths, their use in structural applications often face challenges due to sample size limitations, unstable microstructures, and the limited ability to plastically deform. The incorporation of amorphous grain boundary complexions has been proposed to address these issues, by simultaneously stabilizing nanocrystalline grain structures for scale-up processing and improving alloy toughness. In the present study, the mechanical behavior of bulk nanocrystalline Al–Mg–Y is examined with macroscale compression testing, probing a length scale that is relevant to real-world structural applications. Bulk samples were fabricated via a simple powder metallurgy approach, with different hot-pressing temperatures and durations employed for consolidation in order to investigate microstructural and property evolution. All of the specimens contained primary face-centered cubic Al and secondary Al 4 C 3 and Al 3 Y phases, with the Al 3 Y particles exhibiting two populations of small equiaxed and larger elongated particles. Appreciable plasticity was measured along with high ultimate stresses over 800 MPa due to the presence of amorphous grain boundary complexions. Microstructural characterization of fracture surfaces revealed that the area fraction of dimpled regions increased with longer hot-pressing time. Most importantly, the elongated Al 3 Y particles formed regular cellular patterns with increasing hot-pressing time, delaying shear localization and significantly enhancing plasticity. The hierarchy present in the microstructure of the Al–Mg–Y alloy, from amorphous grain boundary complexions to secondary phases, gives rise to excellent bulk mechanical properties, which are attractive for structural applications.

Kinetic Model for the Reduction of Cu II Sites by NO + NH 3 and Reoxidation of NH 3 -Solvated Cu I Sites by O 2 and NO in Cu-SSZ-13

In this work, a kinetic model is developed for the reduction of Cu II sites by NO + NH 3 and the reoxidation of NH 3 -solvated Cu I sites by O 2 and NO in Cu-SSZ-13. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and spatially resolved capillary inlet mass spectrometry (SpaciMS) measurements during transient reactor experiments are utilized to identify the rate parameters associated with NO + NH 3 RHC (reduction half-cycle), proposed to occur via two distinct pathways involving adsorbed NH 3 and gas-phase NH 3 . The resulting NO + NH 3 RHC model is validated using spatiotemporal N 2 measurements covering a wide range of temperatures (200–450 °C) and space velocities (53,000–640,000 h –1 ). N 2 O formation is observed and modeled during NO + NH 3 RHC, with quantitative validation under standard selective catalytic reduction (SCR) conditions. Experimentally measured enthalpic and entropic changes associated with O 2 adsorption on NH 3 -solvated Cu I (ZCu(NH 3 ) 2 ) complexes [ Kamasamudram, K. Catal. Today 2010 , 151 (3–4), 212-222], along with activation energies estimated computationally for the intercage diffusion of ZCu(NH 3 ) 2 complexes [ Paolucci, C. Science 2017 , 357 (6 354), 898-903], are incorporated into a mean field kinetic model for the low-temperature oxidation half-cycle (OHC). Significant NH 3 release is observed during the isothermal oxidation of Cu I sites, attributed to desorption of NH 3 ligands from NH 3 -solvated Cu II dimers (Z 2 Cu 2 (NH 3 ) 4 O 2 ). Reduction of these dimeric complexes leads to the consumption of one NO/Cu II , contradicting the expected reduction stoichiometry. Inclusion of a global Arrhenius rate for the NO titration of Z 2 Cu 2 (NH 3 ) 4 O 2 complexes provides accurate representations of standard SCR on reduced and oxidized catalysts, predicting transient NO and NH 3 consumption between 150 and 250 °C as a function of hydrothermal aging. Deactivation of low-temperature standard SCR by NH 3 is observed at high NH 3 pressures, modeled via the formation of superoxo amino (ZCu(NH 3 ) 3 OO*) complexes during NH 3 titration of Z 2 Cu 2 (NH 3 ) 4 O 2 complexes [ Negri, C. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2020 , 142 (37), 15884-15896]. The redox kinetic model presented here provides a foundational description of active site redox during low-temperature standard SCR, combining the recent kinetic, spectroscopic, and computational findings on the mechanism of standard SCR over Cu-SSZ-13.

Local structure, bonding, and asymmetry of $\mathrm{((NH_2)_2CH)PbBr_3}$, $\mathrm{CsPbBr_3}$, and $\mathrm{(CH_3MH_3)PbBr_3}$

Here we report local structure measurements for CsPbBr 3 and ((NH 2 ) 2 CH)PbBr 3 (FAPbBr 3 ) and compare them with recent results for (CH 3 NH 3 )PbBr 3 (MAPbBr 3 ). The Pb-Br bonding is similar for all three systems; the effective spring constants, κ, are comparable (ranging from 1.20 to 1.95 eV/Å 2 ), but small in magnitude indicating very soft materials. However, there are also important differences between the three systems. Static disorder is very small for CsPbBr3 but increases somewhat with the size of the organic molecular ions MA + and FA + . At room temperature, dynamic disorder dominates in all compounds. The thermal disorder of the Pb-Br pair distribution function (PDF), i.e., the Debye-Waller factor σ 2 follows a correlated Debye or Einstein model up to 300 K in CsPbBr 3 (orthorhombic phase), but for FAPbBr 3 and MAPbBr 3 , there is a break in the σ 2 (T) curve at the orthorhombic-tetragonal transition (o-t) near 150 K, indicating a small change in the spring constant κ. κ increases for MAPbBr 3 but decreases in FAPbBr 3 at this transition. These changes are attributed to changes in the H-bonding between Br - and MA + or FA + at this transition, as a result of librations or rotations of these molecular cations. In addition, the Pb-Br PDF becomes asymmetric at a relatively low temperature for FAPbBr 3 and MAPbBr 3 , while this effect is significantly smaller for CsPbBr 3 . Finally, we address the question of a model to explain the asymmetric PDF. Two main models are discussed in the literature, an anharmonic pair potential and a split-pair distribution, possibly driven by the presence of a lone pair on the Pb ion. We show that the fourth cumulant C 4 can differentiate between these two models and other possible models. Experimentally C 4 is positive at 250 K and above, for all three systems and that is inconsistent with a split-peak model, for which C 4 is negative for splittings larger than 0.12 Å.

Literature Data on Foam Fracturing Fluid

At the beginning of this project, the Temple team spent significant effort to collect data relevant to foam fracturing. More than 40 articles/reports were found in the open literature that reported the properties of aqueous foams under various testing conditions. The foam properties included viscosity and stability in terms of half-life, while were influenced by the foam quality, shear rate, temperature, pressure, as well as surfactants and additives used in making the foam base solutions. As a result, more than 1100 data points were collected, which are included in a master worksheet named "Literature data on Foam Fracturing Fluid". These data points are organized based on following parameters: 1. Literature source, including authors and publication year 2. Gaseous phase (e.g. CO2, N2) 3. Liquid phase (e.g. tap water, DI water, salt water) 4. Surfactants and their concentrations 6. Additives 7. Foam quality 8. Pressure 9. Temperature 10. Viscosity 11. Proximity Spin–Orbit Torque on a Two-Dimensional Magnet within van der Waals Heterostructure: Current-Driven Antiferromagnet-to-Ferromagnet Reversible Nonequilibrium Phase Transition in Bilayer CrI 3

The recently discovered two-dimensional magnetic insulator CrI 3 is an intriguing case for basic research and spintronic applications since it is a ferromagnet in the bulk but an antiferromagnet in bilayer form, with its magnetic ordering amenable to external manipulations. Using the first-principles quantum transport approach, we predict that injecting unpolarized charge current parallel to the interface of the bilayer-CrI 3 /monolayer-TaSe 2 van der Waals (vdW) heterostructure will induce spin–orbit torque and thereby drive the dynamics of magnetization on the first monolayer of CrI 3 in direct contact with TaSe 2 . By combining the calculated complex angular dependence of spin–orbit torque with the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation for classical dynamics of magnetization, we demonstrate that current pulses can switch the direction of magnetization on the first monolayer to become parallel to that of the second monolayer, thereby converting CrI 3 from antiferromagnet to ferromagnet while not requiring any external magnetic field. We explain the mechanism of this reversible current-driven nonequilibrium phase transition by showing that first monolayer of CrI 3 carries current due to evanescent wave functions injected by metallic transition metal dichalcogenide TaSe 2 , while concurrently acquiring strong spin–orbit coupling via such a proximity effect, whereas the second monolayer of CrI 3 remains insulating. Furthermore, the transition can be detected by passing vertical read current through the vdW heterostructure, encapsulated by a bilayer of hexagonal boron nitride and sandwiched between graphite electrodes, where we find a tunneling magnetoresistance of ≃240%.

A-B Transition in Superfluid $^3$He and Cosmological Phase Transitions

First-order phase transitions in the very early universe are a prediction of many extensions of the Standard Model of particle physics and could provide the departure from equilibrium needed for a dynamical explanation of the baryon asymmetry of the Universe. They could also produce gravitational waves of a frequency observable by future space-based detectors such as the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna. All calculations of the gravitational wave power spectrum rely on a relativistic version of the classical nucleation theory of Cahn-Hilliard and Langer, due to Coleman and Linde. The high purity and precise control of pressure and temperature achievable in the laboratory made the first-order A to B transition of superfluid $^3$He ideal for test of classical nucleation theory. As Leggett and others have noted, the theory fails dramatically. The lifetime of the metastable A phase is measurable, typically of order minutes to hours, far faster than classical nucleation theory predicts. If the nucleation of B phase from the supercooled A phase is due to a new, rapid intrinsic mechanism that would have implications for first-order cosmological phase transitions as well as predictions for gravitational wave production in the early universe. Here we discuss studies of the A-B phase transition dynamics in $^3$He, both experimental and theoretical, and show how the computational technology for cosmological phase transition can be used to simulate the dynamics of the A-B transition, support the experimental investigations of the A-B transition in the QUEST-DMC collaboration with the goal of identifying and quantifying the mechanism(s) responsible for nucleation of stable phases in ultra-pure metastable quantum phases.

Combustion synthesis of Eu 2 O 3 nanomaterials with tunable phase composition and morphology

Combustion reactions in europium nitrate – acetylacetone – 2-methoxyethanol solutions and gels were investigated to produce europium (III) oxide (Eu 2 O 3 ) nanocrystalline materials and thin films. Thermal analyses of solutions indicated that the 2-methoxyethanol solvent also acts as a fuel in the absence of acetylacetone. Adding acetylacetone increases the overall heat of the reaction. Thermal analysis results revealed that the slow oxidation of unburned hydrocarbon residues follows the primary combustion reaction. Time-temperature profile measurements of the bulk combustion synthesis process in air and nitrogen atmospheres enabled the extraction of the maximum reaction temperature and the heating and cooling rates in the combustion zone. Several direct correlations exist between measured combustion parameters and the phase composition of the products. Combustion in air results in mixed-phase cubic and monoclinic nanocrystalline Eu 2 O 3 . Increasing the acetylacetone concentration in solutions increases the synthesis temperature and decreases the quantity of cubic Eu 2 O 3 . Here, the reaction of solutions in a nitrogen atmosphere or diluted with Eu 2 O 3 provides control of the product phase composition and reduces the quantity of the monoclinic phase. Transmission electron microscopy imaging shows that the Eu 2 O 3 end products are highly porous aggregates of nanocrystalline particles. Electrospraying of reactive solutions onto different substrates followed by short annealing makes the preparation of Eu 2 O 3 materials with diverse morphologies possible.

Prediction of high strain polar phases in antiferroelectric PbZrO 3 from multiscale approach

PbZrO 3 is regarded as the first antiferroelectric and currently under intense reexamination. We propose a multiscale approach that combines classical and first principles density functional theory based simulations to explore polar phases in this material. Application of this approach to PbZrO 3 predicts three polar phases, none of which is the common $R3c$. The lowest energy polar phase - $Cc$ - is metastable at zero Kelvin but can be stabilized by application of electric field. Its structural and polarization response to the electric field is in good agreement with experimental data from the literature. The other two phases are $Ima2$ and $I4cm$ of orthorhombic and tetragonal symmetry, respectively, and predicted to stabilize at finite temperatures and under application of larger electric fields. These two phases exhibit very large strain which is of technological significance.

Molecular beam epitaxy of phase-pure antiperovskite Sr 3 SnO thin films

The antiperovskite oxide Sr 3 SnO has attracted substantial interest due to its topologically non-trivial band structure. Sr-deficient Sr3-xSnO can become superconducting, making it a candidate intrinsic topological superconductor. Here, we show that epitaxial, phase-pure Sr 3-x SnO films can be synthesized by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) using solid Sr and SnO 2 sources. Here, we show that Sn-rich growth conditions result in a large amount of a Sn-rich impurity phase, which is challenging to detect in x-ray diffraction. Carrier densities and the amount of the impurity phase change systematically with the growth conditions, indicating that MBE provides excellent control over the films' stoichiometry. We discuss the electrical properties, including quantum interference phenomena, which support the topological nature of the films.

Tracking the phase changes in micelle-based NiGa nanocatalysts for methanol synthesis under activation and working conditions

The hydrogenation of CO 2 into high energy density fuels such as methanol, where the required H 2 is obtained from renewable sources, is of utmost importance for a sustainable society. In recent years, NiGa alloys have attracted attention as promising catalyst material systems for the hydrogenation of CO 2 into methanol at ambient pressures. They thus represent an energy-saving alternative to the Cu-based catalysts employed in today's catalytic industry that require high pressures for the CO 2 hydrogenation. However, the underlying reaction mechanisms for the NiGa system are still under debate. One of the challenges here is to unravel the evolution and coexistence of the different species in the heterogeneous NiGa catalyst system under activation and reaction conditions. To shed light on their evolution under activation in H 2 and their catalytic roles under CO 2 hydrogenation working conditions on well-defined Ni 3 Ga 1 and Ni 5 Ga 3 nanoparticle (NP) catalysts, we employed a multi-probe approach in this study. It included advanced machine learning-based analysis of operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy data combined with operando powder X-ray diffraction and near ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements, as well as reactivity studies using bed-packed mass flow reactors. In addition, we employed atomic force microscopy and scanning transmission electron microscopy for structural characterization. Under H 2 activation at 1 bar total pressure, we concluded the formation of metallic Ni, starting for Ni 3 Ga 1 at 300 °C, and for Ni 5 Ga 3 at 400 °C. At higher temperatures, the formation of NiGa alloys follows. The α'-Ni 3 Ga 1 alloy phase is predominantly formed for the Ni 3 Ga 1 NPs, while the coexistence of α'-Ni 3 Ga 1 , δ-Ni 5 Ga 3 and Ga 2 O 3 phases is observed for the Ni 5 Ga 3 NPs after the H 2 activation. The formation of the Ga 2 O 3 phase also results in the presence of excess metallic Ni. Under CO 2 hydrogenation reaction conditions, Ga partially oxidizes again to form a Ga 2 O 3 -rich particle shell for both NP compositions, yet, to a larger extent for the Ni 3 Ga 1 NPs, which, in turn, feature a higher amount of excess Ni. We reveal that metallic Ni is responsible for the high selectivity of the Ni 3 Ga 1 NPs towards the production of methane in our catalytic tests. In contrast, the Ni 5 Ga 3 NPs display a strong selectivity toward methanol production (>92%), more than one order of magnitude higher than that for the Ni 3 Ga 1 NPs, which we ascribe to the presence of the δ-Ni 5 Ga 3 phase.

Domain patterns and super-elasticity of freestanding BiFeO 3 membranes via phase-field simulations

Super-elasticity of functional ferroelectric oxides offers promises for integrating ferroelectric films into flexible electronics. However, super-elastic deformation is a complex phenomenon related to possibly multiple concurrent mechanisms. Fundamentally understanding how multiple mechanisms contribute to the super-elasticity of ferroelectric oxides is crucial to realizing their potential flexible electronic applications. In this study, we employ phase-field simulations to model the dynamics of ferroelectric domain patterns of freestanding BiFeO 3 membranes to understand the origin of their super-elasticity under substantial bending deformation (5% strain). It is demonstrated that both a reversible Rhombohedral-Tetragonal (R-T) phase transition and a nearly reversible domain evolution of BiFeO 3 membranes contribute to accommodating the large deformation and thus their super-elasticity. The dynamics of domain evolution also reveal the formation of an exotic ferroelectric vortex and polarization rotation before the phase transition. We constructed a diagram of phases and domain patterns as a function of the membrane thickness and bending angle, which allows one to readily predict the emergence of T phase and ferroelectric vortex in bent BFO membranes. These results not only provide fundamental understanding of mesoscale super-elastic mechanisms but also reveal exotic domain states of ferroelectric membranes.
