Prospects for tracking spacecrafts within 2 million Km of Earth with phased array antennas

Recent advances in space technology for Earth observations, global communications, and positioning systems have created heavy traffic at a variety of orbits. These include smart sensors in low Earth orbits (LEO), internet satellites in LEO and GEO orbits, Earth observing satellites in high Earth orbits (HEO), observatory class satellites at Lagrangian libration points, and those heading for deep space.

On the Scan Performance of Phased Array Fed Cylindrical Reflector with SuperQuadric Projected Aperture: PO/FFT Analysis

The need for enhanced observational capabilities in a spaceborne microwave radar instrument to measure rainfall rates, vertical velocities with precipitation, and latent-heating profiles accurately and at sufficiently good resolution and spatial coverage throughout the tropics and mid-latitudes requires a large antenna with high-performance beam-scanning capabilities to avoid contamination by the surface clutter known as range ambiguity.

Design and fabrication of a high temperature leading edge heating array, phase 1

Progress during a Phase 1 program to design a high temperature heating array is reported for environmentally testing full-scale shuttle leading edges (30 inch span, 6 to 15 inch radius) at flight heating rates and pressures. Heat transfer analyses of the heating array, individual modules, and the shuttle leading edge were performed, which influenced the array design, and the design, fabrication, and testing of a prototype heater module.

Thermal infrared array, phase 1. Volume 1: Technical

The recommended design configuration for the focal plane array of a 1,000 element linear pushbroom system consists of 32 modules; the complete configuration is built by butting together two 1024 linear arrays. Each of the linear arrays is formed by edge butting 16 modules together. By staggering the modules of the two rows, the channel outages which occur where the modules are edge butted can be eliminated. Two stages TDI operation is performed by the post processing electronics, which reduces the design complexity of the focal plane. Systems studies show that: (1) a single focal plane design can satisfy both the LEO and SEOS mission configurations; (2) available optical designs can meet mission goals; (3) MTF can be traded with optical complexity in a future study; (4) a chopping mechanism can be devised to modifying modulate radiation to a 4-inch focal plane as well as insert two calibration sources at the required frequencies for chopping and calibration; (5) radiative cooling technology should be suitable for a future sensor in either mission configuration; and (6) cold shielding is not a requirement.

Optical Phased Array Using Guided Resonance with Backside Reflectors

Methods and systems for controlling the phase of electromagnetic waves are disclosed. A device can consist of a guided resonance grating layer, a spacer, and a reflector. A plurality of devices, arranged in a grid pattern, can control the phase of reflected electromagnetic phase, through refractive index control. Carrier injection, temperature control, and optical beams can be applied to control the refractive index.

Optoelectronic Control Of Phased-Array Antenna

Radiation patterns switched within microseconds. According to concept, digital beam-steering information destined for number of phased antenna elements transmitted in serial multiplex along optical fiber to optoelectronic integrated circuit (OEIC), demultiplexing information into parallel electronic channels to phase shifters associated with various elements. Because of small distances between elements of such arrays, compactness of optical fibers makes them attractive for distribution of beam-steering (phase-shifting) control signals. Also offers advantages of light weight, low attenuation, mechanical flexibility, large bandwidth, and immunity to both crosstalk and electromagnetic interference.

Efficient structures for geosynchronous spacecraft solar arrays. Phase 1, 2 and 3

Structural concepts for deploying and supporting lightweight solar-array blankets for geosynchronous electrical power are evaluated. It is recommended that the STACBEAM solar-array system should be the object of further study and detailed evaluation. The STACBEAM system provides high stiffness at low mass, and with the use of a low mass deployment mechanism, full structural properties can be maintained throughout deployment. The stowed volume of the STACBEAM is acceptably small, and its linear deployment characteristic allows periodic attachments to the solar-array blanket to be established in the stowed configuration and maintained during deployment.

Noise characteristics of passive components for phased array applications

The results of a comparative study on noise characteristics of basic power combining/dividing and phase shifting schemes are presented. The theoretical basics of thermal noise in a passive linear multiport are discussed. A new formalism is presented to describe the noise behavior of the passive circuits, and it is shown that the fundamental results are conveniently achieved using this description. The results of analyses concerning the noise behavior of basic power combining/dividing structures (the Wilkinson combiner, 90 deg hybrid coupler, hybrid ring coupler, and the Lange coupler) are presented. Three types of PIN-diode switch phase shifters are analyzed in terms of noise performance.

Airborne Electronically Steerable Phased Array (AESPA) program

The basic concept and design of a flatplate-fed transmission array are described and system performance requirements are summarized. Particular emphasis is given to the design of the aperture, the radiating element, the phase shifter, the flatplate feed, and the mechanical support structure. Fabrication and testing techniques are considered. Of the three major parameters of interest in demonstrating the performance capabilities of the transmissive array, beamwidth was shown to be the least sensitive to system amplitude and phase errors. Beam pointing angle was also shown to be relatively insensitive to errors. Close agreement between measured and calculated values was found for array gain. The greatest difference was found for array sidelone level.

A J-band space-fed phased array

A J-band, space-fed transmissive array suitable to the constraints of space platform applications has been designed and an engineering model array has been fabricated and tested. Attention is given to the design of the aperture, radiating element, phase shifter module, and flatplate feed. Test results and performance are discussed with reference to gain, sidelobe level, and beamwidth as functions of frequency and scan angle.

Integrated Phase Array Antenna/Solar Cell System for Flexible Access Communication (IA/SAC)

This paper describes recent efforts to integrate advanced solar cells with printed planar antennas. Several previous attempts have been reported in the literature, but this effort is unique in several ways. It uses Gallium Arsenide (GaAs) multi-junction solar cell technology. The solar cells and antennas will be integrated onto a common GaAs substrate. When fully implemented, IA/SAC will be capable of dynamic beam steering. In addition, this program targets the X-band (8 - 12 GHz) and higher frequencies, as compared to the 2.2 - 2.9 GHz arrays targeted by other organizations. These higher operating frequencies enable a greater bandwidth and thus higher data transfer rates. The first phase of the effort involves the development of 2 x 2 cm GaAs Monolithically Integrated Modules (MIM) with integrated patch antennas on the opposite side of the substrate. Subsequent work will involve the design and development of devices having the GaAs MIMs and the antennas on the same side of the substrate. Results from the phase one efforts will be presented.
