Flight Service Environmental Effects on Composite Materials and Structures

NASA Langley and the U.S. Army have jointly sponsored programs to assess the effects of realistic flight environments and ground-based exposure on advanced composite materials and structures. Composite secondary structural components were initially installed on commercial transport aircraft in 1973; secondary and primary structural components were installed on commercial helicopters in 1979; and primary structural components were installed on commercial aircraft in the mid-to-late 1980's. Service performance, maintenance characteristics, and residual strength of numerous components are reported. In addition to data on flight components, 10 year ground exposure test results on material coupons are reported. Comparison between ground and flight environmental effects for several composite material systems are also presented. Test results indicate excellent in-service performance with the composite components during the 15 year period. Good correlation between ground-based material performance and operational structural performance has been achieved.

Spacecraft thermal control coatings: Comparison between flight results obtained on LDEF and MIR

The COMES experiment was installed outside of the MIR space station during an extravehicular activity. The experiment was exposed to vacuum, atomic oxygen, and ultraviolet radiation (UV) for 1.1 years. Due to a lack of knowledge about the spacecrafts actual attitude, there is a large uncertainty in the atomic oxygen fluence and the UV dose that was experienced by COMES. Additionally, contaminants of many different origins were observed on the COMES samples.

In-Space Demonstration of Spray-on Solar White Paint

Discs coated with spray-on solar white and two similar thermal control coatings were flown in low earth orbit for roughly five hours. While in orbit, the coated discs were exposed to direct sunlight and to deep space for short intervals. Measurements of disc temperatures showed that the spray-on solar white coating had the lowest absorption of sunlight. Numerical modeling was used to infer that spray-on solar white had a solar absorptance between 0.02 and 0.04 and a thermal emittance between 0.93 and 0.99, both of which are consistent with terrestrial laboratory measurements.

Temperature as a control knob on spin-orbit coupling

Spin-orbit coupling (SOC) governs many physical phenomena. Through ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, Lu and Sun demonstrated that structural disorder at elevated temperatures substantially reduces the effective SOC contribution that stabilizes band inversion, driving a topological-to-normal-insulator transition in Bi2Se3. Their work identifies temperature as a meaningful control parameter for SOC-mediated topology and other properties.

The works of k. e. tsiolkovskiy on rocket technology

K. E. Tsiolkovskiy devoted a rather substantial portion of his works to the problem of flight by means of various reactive devices. We may state without exaggeration that Tsiolkovskiy considered his efforts in this direction to be of prime importance. Up to the time of his death Tsiolkovskiy continuously published articles; notes_ and calculations devoted to a comprehensive analysis of the possibilities and methods of interplanetary communications.

Impact of End Effector Technology on Telemanipulation Performance

Generic requirements for end effector design are briefly summarized as derived from generic functional and operational requirements. Included is a brief summary of terms and definitions related to end effector technology. The second part contains a brief overview of end effector technology work as JPL during the past ten years, with emphasis on the evolution of new mechanical, sensing and control capabilities of end effectors. The third and major part is devoted to the description of current end effector technology. The ongoing work addresses mechanical, sensing and control details with emphasis on mechanical ruggedness, increased resolution in sensing, and close electronic and control integration with overall telemanipulator control system.
