Bit-Wise Arithmetic Coding for Data Compression

Consider the problem of compressing a uniformly quantized source. A traditional approach is to assign variable length codewords to the quantizer output symbols or groups of symbols. Here an alternate solution is proposed: assign a fixed length binary codeword to each output symbol in such a way that a zero is more likely than a one in every codeword bit position. The encoding procedure is described.

COLUTA: Custom 8-Channel 15-bit 40-MSPS ADC for the ATLAS Liquid Argon Calorimeter Readout

The stringent radiation-tolerance, quantization requirements, and the need for seamless integration of the on-detector readout electronics chain require the design of a full-custom analog-to-digital converter (ADC) for the 182,468 channels in the ATLAS Liquid Argon (LAr) calorimeter at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, as part of the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) upgrade. Each of the 8 channels in the prototype 65 nm CMOS ADC with 15-bit resolution and >68 dB signal-to-noise-and-distortion ratio (SNDR), or equivalently >11 effective number of bits (ENOB), consists of a Multiplying-DAC (MDAC) and a successive-approximation (SAR) ADC. A digital data processing unit (DDPU) calibrates and serially transmits the quantized data. Initial lab characterization of 18 chips shows a minimum SNDR of 69.5 dB at full-scale at about 5 MHz and a maximum power consumption of 1.17 W; differential non-linearity (DNL) measurements show no missing codes. Additional validation of the ADC is ongoing before approximately 70k chips can be mass-produced for the upgrade.

(abstract) Production and Levitation of Free Drops of Liquid Helium

We are interested in the nucleation and behavior of quantized vorticies and surface excitations in free drops of superfluid helium. We have constructed an apparatus to maintain liquid helium drops isolated from any material container in the Earth's gravitational field, and have investigated two techniques for generating and introducing liquid drops into the region of confinement. The levitation apparatus utilizes the electrostatic force acting upon a charged liquid drop to counteract the gravitational force, with drop position stability provided by a static magnetic field acting upon the helium diamagnetic moment. Electrically neutral superfluid drops have been produced with a miniature thermomechanical pump; for a given configuration the liquid initial velocity has been varied up to several centimeters per second. Liquid drops carrying either net positive or negative charge are produced by an electrode which generates a flow of ionized liquid from the bulk liquid surface. Potentials of less than one thousand volts to several thousand volts are required. The mass flow is controlled by varying duration of the ionizing voltage pulse; drops as small as 30 micrometers diameter, charged to near the Rayleigh limit, have been observed.

An Analog Processor for Image Compression

This paper describes a novel analog Vector Array Processor (VAP) that was designed for use in real-time and ultra-low power image compression applications. This custom CMOS processor is based architectually on the Vector Quantization (VQ) algorithm in image coding, and the hardware implementation fully exploits the inherent parallelism built-in the VQ algorithm.

VICAR-DIGITAL image processing system

Computer program corrects various photometic, geometric and frequency response distortions in pictures. The program converts pictures to a number of elements, with each elements optical density quantized to a numerical value. The translated picture is recorded on magnetic tape in digital form for subsequent processing and enhancement by computer.

Compensation of pulse-rebalanced inertial instruments

Study explains the basic concept of pulse-rebalanced inertial instruments in terms of an idealized model which performs the processes of integration, prediction and quantization. An analytical model of an actual pulse-rebalanced instrument was derived in a form comparable to the idealized system.
