Multiphysics Degradation Modeling of Energy Storage Materials via RKPM with a Neural Network-Enhancement

In energy storage materials, strong electrochemical-mechanical coupling and highly anisotropic material properties contribute to the formation and propagation of micro-cracking during charge/discharge cycling, resulting in reduced performance and service life. A coupled electro-chemo-mechanical reproducing kernel particle method (RKPM) formulation is developed, and a patch-test is formulated to certify optimal convergence of the proposed RKPM method for the coupled physics system. With microstructural images supplied by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), pixel-based model construction by RKPM is then used to represent the complex material microstructures for modeling the coupled physics of these systems. Further, a neural network-enhanced reproducing kernel particle method (NN-RKPM) [1, 2] is introduced to effectively model damage and crack propagation in the material microstructures; the location, orientation, and solution transition near a localization are automatically captured by superimposed block-level NN optimizations. This NN enrichment approach allows for effective modeling of localizations via a fixed background discretization, relieving tedious efforts for adaptive refinement in traditional mesh-based methods. Applications to the heterogeneous microstructures of Li-ion battery cathodes will be presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods. Reference: [1] Baek, J., Chen, J. Assessing the Performance of Exchange‐Correlation Density Functionals in Describing the Iron‐Catalyzed Ammonia Synthesis System

Density functional theory (DFT) has been widely employed for elucidating mechanistic aspects of heterogeneous catalysis. However, the accuracy of DFT calculations relies heavily on selecting an exchange-correlation (XC) functional that correctly describes the electronic structure of materials involved in the reactions. This study assesses the accuracy of several XC density functionals for modeling the iron-catalyzed ammonia synthesis system. In the assessment of functional accuracy, experimental references are compared to DFT-calculated values for the formation energy of gas-phase ammonia and nitrogen, bulk Fe/Fe-nitride (γ′-Fe 4 N) lattice constants and cohesive/formation energies, and nitrogen and ammonia binding energies on Fe(100), Fe(111), Fe(110), and γ′-Fe 4 N(111). It is observed that the experimental value for each of these descriptors is accurately modeled by at least one functional. RPBE alone provides reliable estimates for both the lattice constant and cohesive energy of Fe and γ′-Fe 4 N. Temperature-programmed desorption experiments led to estimates for N and NH 3 adsorption across several Fe-based facets that are best captured by RPBE. These results highlight the importance of choosing an appropriate XC functional that accurately describes experimental systems and offer insights into effectively modeling the interactions between nitrogen and ammonia on Fe-based surfaces.

Genomic Language model for Annotation of Repetitive Elements (GLARE) v1.0

GLARE (Genomic Language model for Annotation of Repetitive Elements) is a tool that classifies transposable elements (TEs)—the mobile, repetitive DNA sequences that make up large fractions of eukaryotic genomes. GLARE fine-tunes the NTv3-650M genomic language model on a harmonized collection of curated TE sequences from the PanTEon and Repbase reference databases, assigning each input sequence to one of 11 orders and 32 superfamilies in a Wicker-compatible taxonomy. Features. From nucleotide FASTA input, GLARE outputs per-sequence predictions, class summaries, composition figures, and an annotated FASTA. It provides calibrated confidence scores with optional abstention and runs on CPU or GPU. Uses. GLARE serves as a classification component in genome-annotation pipelines, downstream of TE discovery, supporting genome annotation and comparative and evolutionary genomics. Advantages. GLARE is the first repeat-element classifier to leverage a pretrained genomic language model. Combined with multi-database training, this approach outperformed all nine classifiers in the PanTEon benchmark, generalized better to unseen taxonomic clades, and remained robust to sequence orientation—a common failure mode of existing tools.
