A leading edge heating array and a flat surface heating array - operation, maintenance and repair manual

A general description of the leading edge/flat surface heating array is presented along with its components, assembly instructions, installation instructions, operation procedures, maintenance instructions, repair procedures, schematics, spare parts lists, engineering drawings of the array, and functional acceptance test log sheets. The proper replacement of components, correct torque values, step-by-step maintenance instructions, and pretest checkouts are described.

Nine percent nickel steel heavy forging weld repair study

The feasibility of making weld repairs on heavy section 9% nickel steel forgings such as those being manufactured for the National Transonic Facility fan disk and fan drive shaft components was evaluated. Results indicate that 9% nickel steel in heavy forgings has very good weldability characteristics for the particular weld rod and weld procedures used. A comparison of data for known similar work is included.

A Closed Network Queue Model of Underground Coal Mining Production, Failure, and Repair

Underground coal mining system production, failures, and repair cycles were mathematically modeled as a closed network of two queues in series. The model was designed to better understand the technological constraints on availability of current underground mining systems, and to develop guidelines for estimating the availability of advanced mining systems and their associated needs for spares as well as production and maintenance personnel. It was found that: mine performance is theoretically limited by the maintainability ratio, significant gains in availability appear possible by means of small improvements in the time between failures the number of crews and sections should be properly balanced for any given maintainability ratio, and main haulage systems closest to the mine mouth require the most attention to reliability.

Repairing cracked glass

Filing procedure consisting of machined lightweight fused-silica tiles coated with thin-layer of borosilicate glass produces homogeneous seal in thin glass. Procedure is useful in repairing glass envelopes, X-ray tub windows, Dewar flasks, and similar thin glass objects.

Repairing ceramic insulating tiles

Fused-silica tiles containing large voids or gauges are repaired without adhesives by plug insertion method. Tiles are useful in conduits for high-temperature gases, in furnaces, and in other applications involving heat insulation.

Repairing flat cables

Simple procedure avoids costly repairs. Cable insulation flaps are cut and peeled back to expose conductor fractures. Insulation layers of decreasing size allow cable to flex without overstressing mended connectors.

Contamination Control During Weld Repairs

Using internal pressure, weld defects in pipes or tanks are repaired without contaminating interiors that cannot be protected or recleaned. Procedure can be used with pipes or tubing that is attached to components with critical internal clearances. Method has also been successfully used to cut completely through a pipe with a handsaw.

Investigation of a method for repairing the hot gas system branch 2 of the Symphonie-Satellite MV2 in orbit

The failure of all engines on the Symphonie MV2 satellite is attributed to blockage of the oxidizer branch caused by metal salts precipitating and forming a gel which constricts the narrow passage. Laboratory tests and other simulations conducted to observe the behavior of artificially produced jellies on a vacuum show that a removal or at least a reduction of the blockage in the oxidizer branch is possible by evacuation. The greatest blockage appears to occur in the filter. This fact restricts the capability to perform repairs in orbit because the filter installed ahead of the valve cannot by subjected to a vacuum.

Repairing Voids and Delaminations in Composite Materials

Proposed tool forces adhesive into cracks. After inlet and outlet holes have been drilled to proper depth, alinement pin is inserted in inlet hole. Adhesive fills void or is forced into delamination, expanding delamination slightly to ensure full penetration. Potential applications in repair of fiber-reinforced components, boats, storage tanks, and some automobile bodies.

An hierarchical system architecture for automated design, fabrication, and repair

The architecture of an automated system which has the following properties is described: (1) if it is presented with a final product specification (within its capabilities) it will do the detailed design (all the way down to the raw materials if need be) and then produce that product; (2) if a faulty final product is presented to the system, it will repair it. Interesting extensions of this architecture would be the ability to add fabricator nodes when required and the ability to add entire ranks when required. This sort of system would be a useful component of a self-replicating system (used in space exploration).

Repairing Hidden Cracks in Coolant Tubes

Repair technique closes leaks in tubes or conduits where access limited to wall opposite crack. Technique applicable to any tubular assembly where tubes bundled together or bonded to supporting shell, such as in heat exchangers. Procedure provides structural support to area failed and uninterrupted flow without significantly altering heat-transfer profile.

Method of repairing surface damage to porous refractory substrates

A damaged porous refractory material coated with a glass coating is repaired by applying hydrolyzed tetraethyl orthosilicate to the damaged area and curing it. A pliable filler comprised of hydrolyzed tetraethyl orthosilicate and powdered refractory substrate is then applied to the area which is then heated.

Evaluation of DSS-14 pedestal-review of top surface repair procedures

Proposed repair procedures for the top surface of the pedestal supporting the hydrostatic bearing runner for the 64m Antenna are presented. These procedures included: (1) removal of existing grout and concrete to approximately 8 in. below original concrete surface using a presplitting technique with expansive cement followed by secondary breaking; (2) preparation of exposed concrete surface including an epoxy bonding agent; and (3) replacement of material removed with 8 in. of new concrete surface including an epoxy bonding agent; and (4) replacement of material removed with 8 in. of new concrete and 4 in. of new grout.

Field repair of AH-16 helicopter window cutting assemblies

The U.S. Army uses explosively actuated window cutting assemblies to provide emergency crew ground egress. Gaps between the system's explosive cords and acrylic windows caused a concern about functional reliability for a fleet of several hundred aircraft. A field repair method, using room temperature vulcanizing silicone compound (RTV), was developed and demonstrated to fill gaps as large as 0.250 inch.
