A Context-Centered Research Approach to Phishing and Operational Technology in Industrial Control Systems

Advanced persistent threats (APT’s) that leverage phishing against operational technology (OT) are cyber-attacks that endanger critical infrastructure assets nationwide. Today phishing, a human focused exploit, constitutes 91% of successful attack vectors against Federal assets. This means Human Introduced Vulnerabilities (HICV’s) are the weakest cyber defense link. The success of these attacks also suggests HICV’s are not well understood nor mitigated. To characterize HICV’s and provide the necessary context in which they exist, this paper introduces a research approach derived from the mature science of Social Ecology. The desired end result of this research is an HICV focused risk assessment framework.

COVID-19 Joint Pandemic Modeling and Analysis Platform

The non-pharmaceutical intervention to reduce the impact and spread of COVID-19 requires the development of policies and guidance through a collaborative effort among government, academia, medicine, and citizens. To operationalize this effort, we have developed an all-encompassing situational awareness platform that can process multi-modal and multi-source data allowing informed decision making. Besides, showing the current spread of infection, the platform also captures the impact of human dynamics on the infection spread, location, and availability of critical infrastructure, prediction, and high-performance computing driven simulation. The platform is extensible, allowing third-party integration and services to consume the curated data and analytics in near real-time. We believe the platform will augment critical decision making for reducing the impact and spread of the pandemic.

Method and apparatus for shape-based energy analysis of solids

A computer-readable medium stores instructions including storing a model of a physical structure and defining a mesh for the model. The mesh includes finite elements, each defined by a respective set of edges. The instructions include, for each finite element, identifying a governing differential equation and a set of complementary functions that exactly satisfy the governing differential equation. The instructions include determining an applied physical stimulus for the physical structure. The instructions include generating an energy optimization model that minimizes a difference between internal energy and external energy of the finite elements in response to the applied physical stimulus. The model includes a matrix of respective scalar multipliers for the complementary functions for each finite element. The instructions include transforming the matrix and calculating a physical parameter of interest. The instructions include, in response to the physical parameter not satisfying a design parameter, updating the model of the physical structure.

Asymmetric capsule for inertial confinement fusion

Methods, devices and system for asymmetric inertial confinement fusion are disclosed. One method includes a fixing in position a target capsule comprising an inertial confinement fusion fuel, where the target capsule is substantially spherical. The method further includes for applying an oscillatory compression to the target capsule. The oscillatory compression includes compression at a first time in a radial direction orthogonal to a diametric axis of the target capsule, and compression at a second time along the diametric axis to drive the target capsule into driven into an ovoid shape. The oval shaped target can implode upon being further driven at a third time.

Low temperature electrolytes for solid oxide cells having high ionic conductivity

Methods for forming a metal oxide electrolyte improve ionic conductivity. Some of those methods involve applying a first metal compound to a substrate, converting that metal compound to a metal oxide, applying a different metal compound to the metal oxide, and converting the different metal compound to form a second metal oxide. That substrate may be in nanobar form that conforms to an orientation imparted by a magnetic field or an electric field applied before or during the converting. Electrolytes so formed can be used in solid oxide fuel cells, electrolyzers, and sensors, among other applications.

System and method for optical fiber preform preparation via high-surface-area coating

The present disclosure relates to a method for forming a glass, ceramic or composite material. The method may involve initially forming a plurality of tubes and then performing a coating operation to coat the plurality of tubes with materials containing metal or metalloid elements, including inorganic compounds, organometallic compounds, or coordination complexes to form coated tubes. The method may further include performing at least one of a thermal operation or a thermochemical operation on the coated tubes to form a solid glass, ceramic, or composite structure with dimensions representing at least one of a rod or fiber.

Streaming in a Nuclear Grade Sandwich Composite for Microreactor Shielding

The NGSC is a new approach to develop a shield structure for microreactors which combines the biological shielding with the reactor pressure vessel. Six layers of SS316 skins and core materials are present in the NGSC, where the core materials are reduce the neutron and gamma dose. Previous work has examined how a simplified NGSC can be optimized for cost, dose, and weight. This work explored the inclusion of SS36 ribs, which helps maintain the structural integrity of the NGSC, affects the transportation of radiation through the NGSC. For B$_4$C layers, the addition of ribs reduces neutron absorption but increase photon absorption. For WB$_4$-cermet layers, the addition of ribs reduces neutron absorption and reduces photon absorption.
