Fatigue retardation due to creep in a fibrous composite

Experiments performed to determine the effects of temperature and creep strain on the fatigue life of a graphite/epoxy composite laminate show that (1) sustained periods of static loading have significant retardation effects on the fatigue degradation rate of the laminated composite, and (2) cyclic loading with a lower frequency preceding higher frequency loading also prolongs the fatigue life. A creep crack hypothesis is proposed that can provide reasonable interpretations for these experimental results.

Deep anistropic shell program for tire analysis

A finite element program was constructed to model the mechanical response of a tire, treated as a deep anisotropic shell, to specified static loads. The program is based on a Sanders Budiansky type shell theory with the effects of transverse shear deformation and bending-extensional coupling included. A displacement formulation is used together with a total Lagrangian description of the deformation. Sixteen-node quadrilateral elements with bicubic shape functions are employed. The Noor basis reduction technique and various type of symmetry considerations serve to improve the computational efficiency.

Automated optimum design of wing structures. Deterministic and probabilistic approaches

The automated optimum design of airplane wing structures subjected to multiple behavior constraints is described. The structural mass of the wing is considered the objective function. The maximum stress, wing tip deflection, root angle of attack, and flutter velocity during the pull up maneuver (static load), the natural frequencies of the wing structure, and the stresses induced in the wing structure due to landing and gust loads are suitably constrained. Both deterministic and probabilistic approaches are used for finding the stresses induced in the airplane wing structure due to landing and gust loads. A wing design is represented by a uniform beam with a cross section in the form of a hollow symmetric double wedge. The airfoil thickness and chord length are the design variables, and a graphical procedure is used to find the optimum solutions. A supersonic wing design is represented by finite elements. The thicknesses of the skin and the web and the cross sectional areas of the flanges are the design variables, and nonlinear programming techniques are used to find the optimum solution.

Dynamic and static modeling of the shuttle orbiter's thermal protection system

The dynamic and static analysis methods used to model the nonlinear structural behavior of the Shuttle Orbiter's tile/pad thermal protection system are discussed. The structural evaluation of the tile/pad system is complicated by the nonlinear stiffening, hysteresis and viscosity exhibited by the pad material. Application of the analysis to square tiles subject to sinusoidal and random excitation is presented along with appropriate test data. Correlation is considered good. In order to treat the stress analysis of thousands of individual tiles, a nonlinear static analysis was developed which utilizes equivalent static loads derived from the dynamic environment. Tensile stress at the bondline is examined in thousands of unique tiles.

Interferometer Detects Acoustic Emissions in Composites

Embedded single-mode optical fibers sample internal-stress fields directly. Statically loaded composite matrix emits pulsed ultrasonic waves which mechanically modulate embedded fiber and phase-modulate transmitted optical field. Modulation detected by optical interferometry and Fourier optical processing converted to electronic signal proportional to acoustic field amplitude integated along length of fiber embedded in specimen. Technique used for measurements of both high- and low-frequency CW acoustic fields as well as high-frequency transients.

An analysis of traction drive torsional stiffness

The tangential compliance of elastic bodies in concentrated contact applied to traction drive elements to determine their torsional stiffness was analyzed. Static loading and rotating conditions are considered. The effects of several design variables are shown. The theoretical torsional stiffness of a fixed ratio multiroller drive is computed and compared to experimental values. It is shown that the torsional compliance of the traction contacts themselves is a relatively small portion of the overall drive system compliance.

Effect of resin on impact damage tolerance of graphite/epoxy laminates

Twenty-four different epoxy resin systems were evaluated by a variety of test techniques to identify materials that exhibited improved impact damage tolerance in graphite/epoxy composite laminates. Forty-eight-ply composite panels of five of the material systems were able to sustain 100 m/s impact by a 1.27-cm-diameter aluminum projectile while statically loaded to strains of 0.005. Of the five materials with the highest tolerance to impact, two had elastomeric additives, two had thermoplastic additives, and one had a vinyl modifier; all the five systems used bisphenol A as the base resin. An evaluation of test results shows that the laminate damage tolerance is largely determined by the resin tensile properties, and that improvements in laminate damage tolerance are not necessarily made at the expense of room-temperature mechanical properties. The results also suggest that a resin volume fraction of 40 percent or greater may be required to permit the plastic flow between fibers necessary for improved damage tolerance.

Vibration of a hydrostatic gas bearing due to supply pressure oscillations

The vibration of a statically loaded, inherently compensated hydrostatic journal bearing due to oscillating supply pressure is investigated. Both angular and radial vibration modes are analyzed. The time-dependent Reynolds equation governing the pressure distribution between the oscillating journal and the sleeve is solved numerically together with the journal equation of motion to obtain the response characteristics of the bearing. The Reynolds equation and the equation of motion are simplified by applying regular perturbation theory for small displacements. The results presented include Bode plots of bearing oscillation gain and phase for a particular bearing configuration for various combinations of parameters over a range of frequencies, including the resonant frequency. The results are compared with the results of an earlier study involving the response of a similar bearing to oscillating exhaust pressure.

Composite Materials Characterization and Development at AFWAL

The development of test methodology for characterizing matrix dominated failure modes is discussed emphasizing issues of matrix cracking, delamination under static loading, and the relationship of composite properties to matrix properties. Both strength characterization and classical techniques of linear elastic fracture mechanics were examined. Materials development studies are also discussed. Major areas of interest include acetylene-terminated and bismaleimide resins for 350 to 450 deg use, thermoplastics development, and failure resistant composite concepts.

Free-Edge Failures of Composite Laminates

The free-edge delamination of graphite/epoxy laminates under static loading is being analyzed to obtain fundamental understanding of the continuum mechanics involved. The analyses are conducted by idealizing the material response of each ply in the laminate as homogenous, linear elastic, and anisotropic. A generalized plane strain elastic boundary value problem was formulated to investigate the energy variation of such a body.

Initial Sailplane Project: The RP-1

The annual static loading tests were made on the assembled wing/fuselage structure of the RP-1 sailplane. Simple wing bending and wing bending/torsion tests up to about four G's were made, using sand bag loading on the inverted aircraft. Bending a torsion deflections were measured and compared to those obtained in previous years' tests. It appears that the structure is retaining its original strength and stiffness very well. This aircraft has been disassembled and stored on the Jonsson Engineering Center under ambient, indoor conditions of temperature and humidity.

Alternative approximation concepts for space frame synthesis

A structural synthesis methodology for the minimum mass design of 3-dimensionall frame-truss structures under multiple static loading conditions and subject to limits on displacements, rotations, stresses, local buckling, and element cross-sectional dimensions is presented. A variety of approximation concept options are employed to yield near optimum designs after no more than 10 structural analyses. Available options include: (A) formulation of the nonlinear mathematcal programming problem in either reciprocal section property (RSP) or cross-sectional dimension (CSD) space; (B) two alternative approximate problem structures in each design space; and (C) three distinct assumptions about element end-force variations. Fixed element, design element linking, and temporary constraint deletion features are also included. The solution of each approximate problem, in either its primal or dual form, is obtained using CONMIN, a feasible directions program. The frame-truss synthesis methodology is implemented in the COMPASS computer program and is used to solve a variety of problems. These problems were chosen so that, in addition to exercising the various approximation concepts options, the results could be compared with previously published work.

Dynamic characteristics of a hydrostatic gas bearing driven by oscillating exhaust pressure

Vibration of a statically loaded, inherently compensated hydrostatic journal bearing due to oscillating exhaust pressure is investigated. Both angular and radial vibration modes are analyzed. The time-dependent Reynolds equation governing the pressure distribution between the oscillating journal and sleeve is solved together with the journal equation of motion to obtain the response characteristics of the bearing. The Reynolds equation and the equation of motion are simplified by applying regular perturbation theory for small displacements. The numerical solutions of the perturbation equations are obtained by discretizing the pressure field using finite-difference aproximations with a discrete, nonuniform line-source model which excludes effects due to feeding hole volume. An iterative scheme is used to simultaneously satisfy the equations of motion for the journal. The results presented include Bode plots of bearing-oscillation gain and phase for a particular bearing configuration for various combinations of parameters over a range of frequencies, including the resonant frequency.

Alternative approximation concepts for space frame synthesis

A method for space frame synthesis based on the application of a full gamut of approximation concepts is presented. It is found that with the thoughtful selection of design space, objective function approximation, constraint approximation and mathematical programming problem formulation options it is possible to obtain near minimum mass designs for a significant class of space frame structural systems while requiring fewer than 10 structural analyses. Example problems are presented which demonstrate the effectiveness of the method for frame structures subjected to multiple static loading conditions with limits on structural stiffness and strength.
