On-board congestion control for satellite packet switching networks

It is desirable to incorporate packet switching capability on-board for future communication satellites. Because of the statistical nature of packet communication, incoming traffic fluctuates and may cause congestion. Thus, it is necessary to incorporate a congestion control mechanism as part of the on-board processing to smooth and regulate the bursty traffic. Although there are extensive studies on congestion control for both baseband and broadband terrestrial networks, these schemes are not feasible for space based switching networks because of the unique characteristics of satellite link. Here, we propose a new congestion control method for on-board satellite packet switching. This scheme takes into consideration the long propagation delay in satellite link and takes advantage of the the satellite's broadcasting capability. It divides the control between the ground terminals and satellite, but distributes the primary responsibility to ground terminals and only requires minimal hardware resource on-board satellite.

IGBT convertor with active snubber for soft switching

This full bridge dc-dc convertor with IGBTs uses zero voltage switching (ZVS) for one leg of the bridge and zero current switching (ZCS) for the other. It is shown that an active snubber greatly improves the performance over previous methods. Experimental results are shown for a 6 kW circuit switching at 20 kHz.

Advanced large scale GaAs monolithic IF switch matrix subsystem

Attention is given to a novel chip design and packaging technique to overcome the limitations due to the high signal isolation requirements of advanced communications systems. A hermetically sealed 6 x 6 monolithic GaAs switch matrix subsystem with integral control electronics based on this technique is presented. An 0-dB insertion loss and 60-dB crosspoint isolation over a 3.5-to-6-GHz band were achieved. The internal controller portion of the switching subsystem provides crosspoint control via a standard RS-232 computer interface and can be synchronized with an external systems control computer. The measured performance of this advanced switching subsystem is fully compatible with relatively static 'switchboard' as well as dynamic TDMA modes of operation.

Theoretical and experimental analysis of injection seeding a Q-switched alexandrite laser

Injection seeding is a method for achieving linewidths of less than 500 MHz in the output of broadband, tunable, solid state lasers. Dye lasers, CW and pulsed diode lasers, and other solid state lasers have been used as injection seeders. By optimizing the fundamental laser parameters of pump energy, Q-switched pulse build-up time, injection seed power and mode matching, one can achieve significant improvements in the spectral purity of the Q-switched output. These parameters are incorporated into a simple model for analyzing spectral purity and pulse build-up processes in a Q-switched, injection-seeded laser. Experiments to optimize the relevant parameters of an alexandrite laser show good agreement.

On-board B-ISDN fast packet switching architectures. Phase 1: Study

Broadband ISDN (B-ISDN) extends the service integration concept to include future high speed, high volume network services as well as to accommodate narrowband ISDN in its infrastructure. The impact of B-ISDN services on satellite communications can be significant, requiring the same or similar quality of communications services provided by the terrestrial B-ISDN network. Potential satellite applications, alternate satellite network architectures, system design issues, and onboard switching/processing options for satellite B-ISDN services are investigated. Special attention is focused on fast packet switching architectures and switch design details to exploit the feasibility of implementing a fast packet switch in the future advanced communications satellite.

Fuzzy logic mode switching in helicopters

The application of fuzzy logic to a wide range of control problems has been gaining momentum internationally, fueled by a concentrated Japanese effort. Advanced Research & Development within the Engineering Department at Sikorsky Aircraft undertook a fuzzy logic research effort designed to evaluate how effective fuzzy logic control might be in relation to helicopter operations. The mode switching module in the advanced flight control portion of Sikorsky's motion based simulator was identified as a good candidate problem because it was simple to understand and contained imprecise (fuzzy) decision criteria. The purpose of the switching module is to aid a helicopter pilot in entering and leaving coordinated turns while in flight. The criteria that determine the transitions between modes are imprecise and depend on the varied ranges of three flight conditions (i.e., simulated parameters): Commanded Rate, Duration, and Roll Attitude. The parameters were given fuzzy ranges and used as input variables to a fuzzy rulebase containing the knowledge of mode switching. The fuzzy control program was integrated into a real time interactive helicopter simulation tool. Optimization of the heading hold and turn coordination was accomplished by interactive pilot simulation testing of the handling quality performance of the helicopter dynamic model. The fuzzy logic code satisfied all the requirements of this candidate control problem.

Environmental testing of a Q-switched Nd:YLF laser and a Nd:YAG ring laser

A Q-switched Nd:YLF laser (model 110-02) and a Nd:YAG ring laser (model 120-04) from Lightwave Electronics were subjected to thermal and vibration tests similar to what can be expected during launch and flight on a spacecraft. Even though these lasers were not designed for space flight, environmental tests were performed to identify major design weaknesses. Laser performance (output power, energy, pulsewidth, lasing threshold etc.) were measured prior to and after thermal vibration tests. Average output power of the Q-switched laser degraded 15-20 percent after thermal tests and an additional 20-25 percent after vibration tests. Post diagnostic tests revealed that degradation of the Q-switched laser was due to misalignment of pump focusing optics and the laser cavity.

New Remote Gas Sensor Using Rapid Electro-Optical Path Switching

Innovative gas filter correlation radiometer (GFCR) features nonmechanical switching of internal optical paths. Incoming radiation switched electro-optically, by means of polarization, between two optical paths, one of which contains correlation gas cell while other does not. Advantages include switching speed, 2 to 3 orders of magnitude faster than mechanical techniques, and high reliability. Applications include regional studies of atmospheric chemistry from either manned or unmanned aircraft as well as satellite studies of global distributions, sources and sink mechanisms for key species involved in chemistry of troposphere. Commercial applications: ability to survey many miles of natural gas pipelines rapidly from aircraft, pinpointing gas leaks by measuring methane at 2.3 micrometers.

Characteristics of plasma-puff trigger for a inverse-pinch plasma switch

The plasma-puff triggering mechanism based on a hypocycloidal pinch geometry was investigated to determine the optimal operating conditions for the azimuthally uniform surface flashover which initiates plasma-puff under wide ranges of fill gas pressure of Ar, He and N2. The optimal fill-gas pressure range for the azimuthally uniform plasma-puff was about 120 mTorr less than or equal to P(sub op) less than or equal to 450 Torr for He and N2. For Argon 120 mTorr is less than or equal to P(sub op) is less than or equal to 5 Torr. The inverse-pinch switch was triggered with the plasma-puff and the switching capability under various electrical parameters and working gas pressures of Ar, He and N2 was determined. The azimuthally uniform switching discharges were dependent on the type of fill gas and its fill pressure. A new concept of plasma-focus driven plasma-puff will be discussed in comparison with the current hypocycloidal-pinch plasma-puff triggering.

Fast simulation of packet loss rates in a shared buffer communications switch

This paper describes an efficient technique for estimating, via simulation, the probability of buffer overflows in a queueing model that arises in the analysis of ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) communication switches. There are multiple streams of (autocorrelated) traffic feeding the switch that has a buffer of finite capacity. Each stream is designated as either being of high or low priority. When the queue length reaches a certain threshold, only high priority packets are admitted to the switch's buffer. The problem is to estimate the loss rate of high priority packets. An asymptotically optimal importance sampling approach is developed for this rare event simulation problem. In this approach, the importance sampling is done in two distinct phases. In the first phase, an importance sampling change of measure is used to bring the queue length up to the threshold at which low priority packets get rejected. In the second phase, a different importance sampling change of measure is used to move the queue length from the threshold to the buffer capacity.

Liquid Nitrogen Temperature Operation of a Switching Power Converter

The performance of a 42/28 V, 175 W, 50 kHz pulse-width modulated buck dc/dc switching power converter at liquid nitrogen temperature (LNT) is compared with room temperature operation. The power circuit as well as the control circuit of the converter, designed with commercially available components, were operated at LNT and resulted in a slight improvement in converter efficiency. The improvement in power MOSFET operation was offset by deteriorating performance of the output diode rectifier at LNT. Performance of the converter could be further improved at low temperatures by using only power MOSFET's as switches. The use of a resonant topology will further improve the circuit performance by reducing the switching noise and loss.

The subcritical, quasi-parallel, switch-on shock

The conditions that lead to subcritical, quasi-parallel bow shocks are very rare. Even more rarely, a subcritical, quasi-parallel shock can also be termed a switch-on shock, where the tangential component of the magnetic field, which is very small upstream, is said to 'switch on' downstream. The Rankine-Hugoniot conservation relations predict that the jump in the tangential component of the magnetic field across the shock is very large for these upstream conditions. In this study, we find that the measured jumps in the plasma conditions are in accord with predictions made by the Rankine-Hugoniot conservation relations. The structure of the switch-on shock, not predicted by the Rankine-Hugoniot equations, is very similar to that of the subcritical, quasi-perpendicular shock, with the exception that the precursor wave in front of the shock ramp damps more slowly.

Location of the emitting regions in the mode-switching radio pulsar PSR 1926 + 18

We present an analysis of average single-frequency profiles of the radio pulsar PSR 1926 + 18 in two different modes. Assuming a purely dipolar field and taking into account retardation, aberration, magnetic line curvature, and ignoring the magnetic field line sweepback, we come to the following conclusions: (1) mode switching in PSR 1926 + 18 at 430 MHz may be understood in terms of different emission heights of the two modes; (2) the weaker mode appears when regions emitting the first two components move away from the star by an additional distance of not more than several kilometers from their original locations; (3) the trailing conal component is emitted essentially from the same layer of the magnetosphere in both modes, in contrast to the first conal component, which appears to change its location in the magnetosphere; (4) core and conal components are emitted from distinctly different emission heights: core components not more than 75 km, and conal components not less than 215 km from the surface of the star. Our model infers three-dimensional information about the emitting region from single-frequency observations. It has been tested previously with a mode switching pulsar that had one component in the average profile in two modes. This paper shows that the same model can explain positions and widths of the components in a more complex profile during mode switching, provided that the components can be traced from one mode to another.

MMPP Traffic Generator for the Testing of the SCAR 2 Fast Packet Switch

A prototype MWP Traffic Generator (TG) has been designed for testing of the COMSAT-supplied SCAR II Fast Packet Switch. By generating packets distributed according to a Markov-Modulated Poisson Process (MMPP) model. it allows the assessment of the switch performance under traffic conditions that are more realistic than could be generated using the COMSAT-supplied Traffic Generator Module. The MMPP model is widely believed to model accurately real-world superimposed voice and data communications traffic. The TG was designed to be as much as possible of a "drop-in" replacement for the COMSAT Traffic Generator Module. The latter fit on two Altera EPM7256EGC 192-pin CPLDs and produced traffic for one switch input port. No board changes are necessary because it has been partitioned to use the existing board traces. The TG, consisting of parts "TGDATPROC" and "TGRAMCTL" must merely be reprogrammed into the Altera devices of the same name. However, the 040 controller software must be modified to provide TG initialization data. This data will be given in Section II.

Context Switching with Multiple Register Windows: A RISC Performance Study

Although previous studies have shown that a large file of overlapping register windows can greatly reduce procedure call/return overhead, the effects of register windows in a multiprogramming environment are poorly understood. This paper investigates the performance of multiprogrammed, reduced instruction set computers (RISCs) as a function of window management strategy. Using an analytic model that reflects context switch and procedure call overheads, we analyze the performance of simple, linearly self-recursive programs. For more complex programs, we present the results of a simulation study. These studies show that a simple strategy that saves all windows prior to a context switch, but restores only a single window following a context switch, performs near optimally.
