Multidisciplinary studies of the social economic and political impact resulting from recent advances in satellite meteorology, volume 4
Management and use meteorological satellite data to detect severe storms and crop disease
Social, economic and political factors associated with earth resources observation and information analyses.
Discussion of some of the interest conflicts between ecology and economics that arise, particularly in riparian environments, when a population-increase entailed growth in public service requirements is met by indiscriminate technology applications. Reviewed instances of such conflicts include the aborted cross-Florida barge canal project and the Florida Power and Light Company facility at Turkey point.
Apollo management: A key to the solution of the social-economical dilemma - The transferability of space-travel managerial techniques to the civil sector
An analysis has been conducted to find out whether the management techniques developed in connection with the Apollo project could be used for dealing with such urgent problems of modern society as the crisis of the cities, the increasing environmental pollution, and the steadily growing traffic. Basic concepts and definitions of program and system management are discussed together with details regarding the employment of these concepts in connection with the solution of the problems of the Apollo program. Principles and significance of a systems approach are considered, giving attention to planning, system analysis, system integration, and project management. An application of the methods of project management to the problems of the civil sector is possible if the special characteristics of each particular case are taken into account.
Multidisciplinary studies of the social, economic and political impact resulting from recent advances in satellite meteorology, Volume 5
Studies are presented on mesoscale weather monitoring, analysis, and dissemination of weather forecasts for the Wisconsin area.
Measuring and minimizing the social cost of environmental pollution
The various impacts to the environmental protection movement on the largest corporations in several industries which had the most serious pollution problem are discussed. The purpose was to examine the impacts from the point of view of top corporation managers so that a broader perspective could be provided for all concerned parties- citizens, environmentalists, legislators, governmental administrators and agency personnel, scientists, engineers, and other industrial managers.

Studies of social group dynamics under isolated conditions. Objective summary of the literature as it relates to potential problems of long duration space flight
Scientific literature which deals with the study of human behavior and crew interaction in situations simulating long term space flight is summarized and organized. A bibliography of all the pertinent U.S. literature available is included, along with definitions of the behavioral characteristics terms employed. The summarized studies are analyzed according to behavioral factors and environmental conditions. The analysis consist of two matrices. (1) The matrix of factors studied correlates each research study area and individual study with the behavioral factors that were investigated in the study. (2) The matrix of conclusions identifies those studies whose investigators appeared to draw specific conclusions concerning questions of importance to NASA.
Multidisciplinary studies of the social, economic and political impact resulting from recent advances in satellite meteorology. Volume 6: Executive summary
An assessment of the technological impact of modern satellite weather forecasting for the United States is presented. Topics discussed are: (1) television broadcasting of weather; (2) agriculture (crop production); (3) water resources; (4) urban development; (5) recreation; and (6) transportation.
Generating social impact scenarios: A key step in making technology assessment studies
The MITRE methodological studies were conducted to define relevant questions in relation to the concept of total impact analysis and to provide a procedure for integrating diverse checklists of questions which trace the initial and secondary impacts of any major technological application or of society's attempts to respond to or redirect that application. Some of the results of that study are presented in tabular form.
Applied group theory applications in the engineering (physical, chemical, and medical), biological, social, and behavioral sciences and in the fine arts
A generalized applied group theory is developed, and it is shown that phenomena from a number of diverse disciplines may be included under the umbrella of a single theoretical formulation based upon the concept of a group consistent with the usual definition of this term.
What's the use of land? (a secondary school social studies project)
The concept of a student land use survey was discussed with the curriculum development team of the Jefferson County Public Schools in Colorado. In these discussions it soon became apparent that the curriculum potentials included much more than a classroom activity involving mapping the features on the ground in the area of study. A new flood control dam to be located in the area of Denver, Colorado, became the central topic in a program involving a wide variety of curriculum fields, such as mapmaking, local community history, physical geography, mathematics, and environmental studies. Consequently, a prototype of a multidisciplinary unit concept was developed for later incorporation by the Jefferson County curriculum team.
STS multimission modular spacecraft - A new horizon in social and industrial benefits
Economics and benefits of orbiting observatory Multi-mission Modular Spacecraft are discussed. The Space Shuttle can be used both to place these satellites in low-altitude workhorse orbits and to maintain their functioning in any of three ways - on-orbit service (by visiting the satellite with the Shuttle), Shuttle retrieval and ground refurbishment of the entire satellite, and replacement of a failed satellite with a new one. Individuals could receive information from these satellites either indirectly, by turning to a specialty television station, or directly, by calling up information on their television sets as needed. Such information, for example, might include reconnoitering interesting areas, following the weather, or locating migratory fish. Equipment and costs of the proposed Landsats and Seasats are discussed.

Social and Economic Impact of Solar Electricity at Schuchuli Village
Schuchuli, a small remote village on the Papago Indian Reservation in southwest Arizona, is 27 kilometers (17 miles) from the nearest available utility power. Its lack of conventional power is due to the prohibitive cost of supplying a small electrical load with a long-distance distribution line. Furthermore, alternate energy sources are expensive and place a burden on the resources of the villagers. On December 16, 1978, as part of a federally funded project, a solar cell power system was put into operation at Schuchuli. The system powers the village water pump, lighting for homes and other village buildings, family refrigerators and a communal washing machine and sewing machine.
Community reactions to aircraft noise in the vicinity of airport: A comparative study of the social surveys using interview method
A comparative study was performed on the reports of community reactions to aircraft noise. The direct and immediate reactions to aircraft noise such as perceived noisiness, interference with conversations, etc. and various emotional influences were most remarkable; indirect and long term influences such as disturbance of mental work and physical symptoms were less remarkable.
Social issues and implications of remote sensing applications: Paradigms of technology transfer
The transfer of technology from one federal agency to another was observed in the case of the move of LANDSAT to NOAA. An array of unanticipated consequences was found that have important impacts on both the process and outcome of the transfer. When the process was studied from viewpoint of the ultimate recipient, a set of expectations and perceptions were found that figure more in a final assessment than do the attributes of the technology being transfered. The question of how to link a technology with a community of potential users was studed in detail.
