This report presents the analytical data for the 2019 calendar year (CY) (January 1 through December 31, 2019). Appendix C presents data from samples collected in 2016, 2017, and 2018. These results were not reported in previous sampling reports because they were not available from the specialized laboratories at the time of the publication of the reports.
The National Renewable Energy Laboratory initiated a Prize with support from Argonne National Laboratory (ANL), Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), and sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy Water Power Technologies Office (DOE WPTO) to encourage ideas to reduce the time to commissioning for PSH projects. As a result, nine finalists have been chosen to develop their concepts in advance of the FAST Prize Pitch Contest to be held on October 7, 2019. The National Labs will provide technical and business advisement to the noted FAST Prize finalists in preparation for this Pitch Contest.
The method developed and presented here improves our nuclear explosion monitoring capability by providing a new independent and transportable method to determine the explosive yields of seismically recorded events associated with foreign weapons development. Here we report new independent absolute yield and depth of burial estimates of the North Korean nuclear tests which are commensurate with previously determined source parameters. The key advantage of this method over other methods which estimate absolute explosive yields is that this method does not require any a priori calibration, and can be immediately applied to any region of interest. This method uses the source information obtained from the spectral ratios of envelopes of measured seismic coda waves to invert for model-derived yield and depth of burial. The only requirements of this method are that the region of interest must contain several (> 3) seismic sources which have been well recorded (SNR > 2) by a set of shared stations. For regions with only a few events (~ 3) and/or extremely band-limited observations for which the depth of burial is unknown, an earthquake with a known magnitude may be required to obtain an accurate and robust yield estimate.

This report presents the results of monitoring conducted for water quality, water levels, and institutional controls in FY 2020 by DOE/EM Nevada Program UGTA Activity at CAU 97, Yucca Flat/Climax Mine at the Nevada National Security Site. This report also presents analytical laboratory results (including results of quality assurance/quality control samples, such as field duplicates); and verification of use restrictions, institutional controls, and water use.
This letter serves as the annual post-closure letter for Corrective Action Unit (CAU) 97, Yucca Flat/Climax Mine (YF/CM); CAU 98, Frenchman Flat (FF); and CAU 99, Rainier Mesa/Shoshone Mountain (RM/SM) for calendar year (CY) 2020. This letter will discuss the post-closure monitoring activities that occurred during CY 2020, identify any triggers reached, and summarize water usage on the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) and surrounding hydrographic basins at the three CAUs.
This CY 2020 annual sampling report presents the background of the FFACO and Sampling Plan implementation, sampling and analysis methods, sampling results, quality assurance and quality control, regulatory requirements, and analytical data for the CY 2020. Appendix A presents data from samples collected in CY 2020 from the YF/CM CAU and the RM/SM CAU. This sampling was conducted in support of the Sampling Plan at these CAUs prior to approval of the final CRs. Appendix B presents the well completion diagrams for the wells sampled in CY 2020. Appendix C presents data from samples collected in CY 2019. These results were not reported in the previous sampling report because they were not available from the specialized laboratories at the time of the report’s publication.

This addendum to the CR for CAU 98, Frenchman Flat, NNSS, Nevada (compiled in DOE/EMNV, 2019) defines the long-term monitoring approach after a five-year evaluation of water sampling results, water-level measurements, and trends in water-level measurements. The approach was developed by Navarro and discussed in the report Corrective Action Unit 98: Frenchman Flat Five-Year Evaluation Nevada National Security Site, Nevada (DOE/EMNV, 2022), which was approved by NDEP. Sections 4.0 and 5.0 of the CR were rewritten to reflect the approach discussed in the five-year evaluation. Appendix C contains well construction diagrams that have been updated since the original CR was published. Appendix D contains updated Use Restriction (UR) forms and maps. NDEP requested an addendum instead of a complete revision to the Frenchman Flat CR so the history of the CR would not be lost.
This QAP provides the overall quality assurance requirements and general quality practices to be applied to the DOE EM requirements and Nevada Program UGTA activities.
This QAP was revised to focus on requirements to ensure quality planning, performance, review, and documentation of work performed for the UGTA activity CAUs, which are now in the corrective action decision document CADD)/CAP and CR stages.
