Workshop on Generalized Parton Distributions for Nucleon Tomography in the EIC Era

The aim of the workshop is to examine the theoretical components that need to be incorporated, challenges and opportunities in different LQCD formalisms for computing hadron properties non-perturbatively from the underlying fundamental theory, and the requirements for an analysis framework of experimental data. The outcome of the workshop will be a white paper, and the establishment of a collaborative effort aimed at tackling these challenges and ensuring that the resulting framework can be applied across the emerging theoretical and experimental programs.

Utah FORGE 5-2557: Role of Fluid and Temperature in Fracture Mechanics and Couples THMC Processes for Enhanced Geothermal Systems - 2024 Annual Workshop Presentation

This is a presentation on the Role of Fluid and Temperature in Fracture Mechanics and Couples THMC Processes for Enhanced Geothermal Systems by Purdue University, presented by Laura Pyrak-Nolte. This video slide presentation describes the development and validation of a macroscopic model that can account for local deformation/friction behavior, seismic/aseismic behavior, chemical reactions, and determine the adequacy of classic Coulomb failure vs. rate-and-state friction. This presentation was featured in the Utah FORGE R&D Annual Workshop on August 13, 2024.

DOE EERE AMO Electrochemistry for Manufacturing (Workshop Report)

The Advanced Manufacturing Office (AMO) aims to improve the efficiency, productivity, environmental impact, and competitiveness of the manufacturing sector. The use of electrochemistry in manufacturing could help AMO achieve these goals with its potential to have significant impact on sustainability, energy and carbon efficiency, and U.S. manufacturing competitiveness. The “Electrochemistry for Manufacturing” workshop series was designed to help AMO understand (1) how electrochemistry can be used within the manufacturing sector to achieve AMO’s goals and (2) the support for technology and workforce development that is needed from AMO to leverage crosscutting efforts that can enable successful outcomes.

Support of the US-Japan Binational Photosynthesis Workshop

This workshop was held over the course of 3 days in early November of 2023 on the campus of Arizona State University. Its primary goal was to facilitate interaction and productive collaboration between scientists based in Japan and the U.S. who work on the mechanisms of energy transduction carried out by photosynthetic organisms. Due to boundaries of geography and culture, communication and collaboration between US and Japanese scientists working in the field has not always been optimal. The UJBPW overcame these boundaries by holding a relatively small conference where people could discuss results and ideas freely. The emphasis was on scientific diversity and promotion of younger scientists and it gave graduate students the opportunity to meet the people whose papers they have been reading and perhaps find a postdoctoral position, which is a great way to forge scientific links across national boundaries.

Photovoltaic Reliability Workshop (PVRW) 2024 Proceedings: Posters

NREL hosts an annual Photovoltaic Reliability Workshop (PVRW) so that solar technology experts can discuss current and future issues in PV reliability. Longer-lasting PV systems make lower-cost solar electricity and have less impact on the environment, human health, and natural resources. PVRW offers a combination of oral presentations, panel discussions with vigorous audience participation, and poster presentations. This document collects posters that were presented at PVRW 2024.

Flame Chemistry Workshop: a perspective on challenges and strategic actions in combustion experiments and chemical kinetics modeling

Continued progress in the development of predictive models for combustion chemistry—including ignition and flame behavior, species evolution, and combustion system performance—relies on overcoming enduring and emerging challenges in experimental measurements, theoretical formulations, and chemical kinetics mechanism construction. As combustion science continues to coincide with advances in sustainable fuels development, plasma technologies, and automated modeling capabilities, the need for coordinated, community-driven strategies is essential. The Flame Chemistry Workshop (FCWS), held biennially before the International Symposium on Combustion, serves as a dedicated platform to identify, consolidate, and address these challenges in a structured and collaborative manner. This perspective arises from discussions at the 7th FCWS in Milan, Italy (2024), and presents a collective view of the critical barriers currently limiting progress. Across the five technical domains discussed during the 7th FCWS – sustainable fuels combustion, advanced diagnostics for combustion measurements, experiments and modeling in plasma combustion, artificial intelligence and automated methods for theory and mechanisms generation, and chemical kinetic models—a series of persistent and emerging scientific challenges were identified, highlighting the need for deeper integration between three areas: theory, experiments, and modeling. In conclusion, the present article concisely describes present challenges that were identified in each of the technical domains in an effort to streamline and coordinate solutions to accelerate progress in combustion science.

Interprofessional Image Verification Workshop for Physician and Physics Residents: A Multi-Institutional Experience

Verification of patient position through pretreatment setup imaging is crucial in modern radiation therapy. As treatment complexity increases and technology evolves, physicist-physician collaboration becomes imperative for safe and successful radiation delivery. Despite the importance of both, residency programs lack formal interprofessional education (IPE) activities or structured training for image verification. Here we show the impact of an interprofessional image verification workshop for residents in a multi-institutional setting.

Applications of “Synchrotron Radiation Workshop” Code

The “Synchrotron Radiation Workshop” (SRW) computer code was started in the group of Insertion Devices of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility in 1997. The idea behind it was to combine in one software library electrodynamics methods for calculating electric fields (and derived characteristics) of synchrotron radiation (SR) generated by relativistic electrons moving in magnetic fields of nearly arbitrary configuration with wave-optics methods for simulating propagation of radiation through optical elements of beamlines. Further, the use of this general approach was initially driven by applications in electron beam diagnostics using SR. However, with time it started to be used for more complicated beamlines of synchrotron light sources, and the use of the code for these applications continues to increase, with the new light sources offering brighter and more coherent x ray beams for wide ranges of experiments in different areas of science.
