Haystack Observatory

Radio astronomy programs comprise three very-long-baseline interferometer projects, ten spectral line investigations, one continuum mapping in the 0.8 cm region, and one monitoring of variable sources. A low-noise mixer was used in mapping observations of 3C273 at 31 GHz and in detecting of a new methyl alcohol line at 36,169 MHz in Sgr B2. The new Mark 2 VLBI recording terminal was used in galactic H2O source observations using Haystack and the Crimean Observatory, USSR. One feature in W29 appears to have a diameter of 0.3 millisec of arc and a brightness temperature of 1.4 x 10 to the 15th power K. Geodetic baseline measurements via VLBI between Green Bank and Haystack are mutually consistent within a few meters. Radar investigations of Mercury, Venus, Mars, and the Moon have continued. The favorable opposition of Mars and improvements in the radar permit measurements on a number of topographic features with unprecedented accuracy, including scarps and crater walls. The floor of Mare Serenitatis slopes upward towards the northeast and is also the location of a strong gravitational anomaly.

Investigation of critical burning of fuel droplets

Measurements were made on the burning of liquid hydrazine, MMH, and UDMH in a combustion gas environment. The experimental range of these tests involved gas temperatures of 1660-2530 K, oxygen concentrations of 0-42% by mass and droplet diameters (employing both droplets and porous spheres) of 0.11-1.91 cm. at atmospheric pressure. A simplified hybrid combustion theory was developed which was found to correlate the present results as well as the experimental measurements of other investigators. Measurements were also made of the monopropellant strand burning rates and liquid surface temperatures of a number of nitrate ester fuels and hydrazine at elevated pressures. The temperature measurements for the nitrate esters were found to be in good agreement with a theoretical model which allowed for gas solubility in the liquid phase at high pressures. Experimental results were also obtained on the burning rates and liquid surface temperatures of a number of paraffin and alcohol fuels burning in air pressures up to 72 atm. For these tests, the fuels were burned from porous spheres in a natural convection environment. Initial findings on a pressurized flat flame burner are also described as well as the design of an oscillatory combustion apparatus to test the response of burning liquid fuels.

Oxidation of vehicle components by photoproduced holes.

The oxidation by ZnO holes of vehicle components in thermal control coatings has been examined to develop experimental methods to study such reactions and to identify what components to avoid because of their instability when in the presence of u.v.-produced holes. Two methods were used that show consistent results. An electrochemical technique with a single crystal ZnO anode was used for quantitative comparisons, and electron spin resonance was used to study more practical powder/vehicle systems. Alcohols and dioxane were shown to be readily oxidized by ZnO holes, whereas acetonitrile, neopentane, and ethyl acetate were oxidation resistant. Some resistance to the photooxidation was provided by recombination centers.

Formulation procedure and spectral data for a coatings system optimally employing the high intrinsic reflectance of barium sulphate

The use of polyvinyl alcohol as a binder for barium sulphate does not allow the intrinsically high reflectance of this material in the near vacuum ultraviolet to be optimally employed. In an effort to better utilize this property, completely inorganic coatings systems are described, where from the intrinsically high reflectance of barium sulphate in this spectral region can be gotten. Potassium sulphate turns out to be the preferred binder. Compositions, formulating procedures, and application techniques are included. For completeness, absolute and relative reflectance data are included for intra- and intersystem comparisons.

Determination of Optical Constants of in Bi from Reflectance Measurements

A fall in reflectance was noted from values obtained for a freshly cleaved sample to values obtained after periods of exposure of the surface to air. The decrease in reflectance with increased exposure time is attributed to formation of a surface layer insoluble in Freon or ethyl alcohol; it is assumed to be a tarnish layer. Computer processing was employed to calculate optical constants from reflectance data.

An analytical and experimental investigation of rotating, non-capillary heat pipes

An approximate theoretical model is derived for laminar film condensation on the inside of a rotating, truncated cone, and is used to predict the heat transfer performance of rotating, non-capillary heat pipes for a wide variety of parametric conditions. Experimental results are presented for water, ethyl alcohol, and freon-113 in a stainless steel heat pipe rotating to speeds of 2800 rpm. Results show that these devices can be used effectively to transfer large quantities of heat in rotating systems. Predicted results agree to within + or - 20 percent of the experimental data. Dropwise condensation, instead of film condensation, improves heat pipe performance while the presence of non-condensible gases impairs performance.

Sensitivity to emotional ill health

The services of mental specialists, such as psychologists, psychiatrists, or psychiatric social workers are required to assure maximum human performance in Government facilities. Contemporary mental health programming covers emotionally generated problems at operational sites to complete disclaiming of the existence of such difficulties among workers. Frequent taking of sick leave or annual leave when work seems demanding or when a promotion does not materialize, chronic or repeated tardiness, requests for frequent transfers, work over-loading, accidental injuries, and alcoholism are all forms of stress responses and indicate a need for emotional counselling.

O(D-1) production in ozone photolysis near 310 nm

Relative quantum yields of O(D-1)production, phi, in ozone photolysis from 275 nm to 334 nm were determined in the gas phase at 233 K. The O(D-1) was monitored by means of its reaction with isobutane to form isobutyl alcohol. The light source was a high pressure mercury lamp combined with a monochromator, with a bandwidth of 1.6 nm. The results show a constant phi below 300 nm, which is taken as unity on the basis of previous work. There is a very sharp fall-off in phi which is centered at 308 nm. At 313 nm phi is not greater than 0.1.

Incipient separation pressure rise for a Mach 3.8 turbulent boundary layer.

Additional incipient separation data presented cover a range of Reynolds numbers not covered in previous investigations conducted by Seebaugh (1968) and Rose (1972). A novel technique for detecting incipient separation is discussed. Several methods for detecting separation are considered. One method is based on the introduction of alcohol at a minute rate into the boundary layer.

High pressure combustion of liquid fuels

Measurements were made of the burning rates and liquid surface temperatures for a number of alcohol and n-paraffin fuels under natural and forced convection conditions. Porous spheres ranging in size from 0.64-1.9 cm O.D. were emloyed to simulate the fuel droplets. The natural convection cold gas tests considered the combustion in air of methanol, ethanol, propanol-1, n-pentane, n-heptane, and n-decane droplets at pressures up to 78 atmospheres. The pressure levels of the natural convection tests were high enough so that near critical combustion was observed for methanol and ethanol vaporization rates and liquid surface temperature measurements were made of droplets burning in a simulated combustion chamber environment. Ambient oxygen molar concentrations included 13%, 9.5% and pure evaporation. Fuels used in the forced convection atmospheric tests included those listed above for the natural convection tests. The ambient gas temperature ranged from 600 to 1500 K and the Reynolds number varied from 30 to 300. The high pressure forced convection tests employed ethanol and n-heptane as fuels over a pressure range of one to 40 atmospheres. The ambient gas temperature was 1145 K for the two combustion cases and 1255 K for the evaporation case.

Anti-motion-sickness therapy

Neither alterations in environmental temperature nor moderate intake of alcohol was found to alter susceptibility to motion sickness in subjects exposed to rotation in the Pensacola slow rotation room. Scopolamine with d-amphetamine was found to be the most effective preparation for the prevention of motion sickness under the experimental conditions of the studies reported here. Promethazine in combination with d-amphetamine was in the same range of effectiveness. Drug actions suggest that acetylcholine and norepinephrine may be involved in motion sickness.
