Reversible Anionic Redox Activities in Conventional LiNi 1/3 Co 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 Cathodes

Redox reactions of oxygen have been considered critical in controlling the electrochemical properties of lithium-excessive layered-oxide electrodes. However, conventional electrode materials without overlithiation remain the most practical. Typically, cationic redox reactions are believed to dominate the electrochemical processes in conventional electrodes. Herein, we show unambiguous evidence of reversible anionic redox reactions in LiNi 1/3 Co 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 . The typical involvement of oxygen through hybridization with transition metals is discussed, as well as the intrinsic oxygen redox process at high potentials, which is 75 % reversible during initial cycling and 63% retained after 10 cycles. Our results clarify the reaction mechanism at high potentials in conventional layered electrodes involving both cationic and anionic reactions and indicate the potential of utilizing reversible oxygen redox reactions in conventional layered oxides for high-capacity lithium-ion batteries.

Reduction of π–Expanded Cyclooctatetraene with Lithium: Stabilization of the Tetra–Anion through Internal Li + Coordination

The chemical reduction of a π-expanded polycyclic framework comprising a cyclooctatetraene moiety, octaphenyltetrabenzocyclooctatetraene, with lithium metal readily affords the corresponding tetra-anion instead of the expected aromatic dianion. As revealed by X-ray crystallography, the highly contorted tetra-anion is stabilized by coordination of two internally bound Li + , while two external cations remain solvent separated. The variable-temperature 7 Li NMR spectra in THF confirm the presence of three types of Li + ions and clearly differentiate internal binding, consistent with the crystal structure. Density-functional theory calculations suggest that the formation of the highly charged tetra-reduced carbanion is stabilized through Li + coordination under the applied experimental conditions.

Stabilization Of The CN 3 5− Anion In Recoverable High‐pressure Ln 3 O 2 (CN 3 ) (Ln=La, Eu, Gd, Tb, Ho, Yb) Oxoguanidinates

Abstract A series of isostructural Ln 3 O 2 (CN 3 ) (Ln=La, Eu, Gd, Tb, Ho, Yb) oxoguanidinates was synthesized under high‐pressure (25–54 GPa) high‐temperature (2000–3000 K) conditions in laser‐heated diamond anvil cells. The crystal structure of this novel class of compounds was determined via synchrotron single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction (SCXRD) as well as corroborated by X‐ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) measurements and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The Ln 3 O 2 (CN 3 ) solids are composed of the hitherto unknown CN 3 5− guanidinate anion—deprotonated guanidine. Changes in unit cell volumes and compressibility of Ln 3 O 2 (CN 3 ) (Ln=La, Eu, Gd, Tb, Ho, Yb) compounds are found to be dictated by the lanthanide contraction phenomenon. Decompression experiments show that Ln 3 O 2 (CN 3 ) compounds are recoverable to ambient conditions. The stabilization of the CN 3 5− guanidinate anion at ambient conditions provides new opportunities in inorganic and organic synthetic chemistry.

A Dual Anion Chemistry-Based Superionic Glass Enabling Long-Cycling All-Solid-State Sodium-Ion Batteries

Glassy Na-ion solid-state electrolytes (GNSSEs) are an important group of amorphous SSEs. However, the insufficient ionic conductivity of state-of-the-art GNSSEs at room temperature lessens their promise in the development of all-solid-state Na-ion batteries (ASSNIBs) with high energy density and improved safety. Here we report the discovery of a new sodium superionic glass, 0.5Na 2 O 2 -TaCl 5 (NTOC), based on dual-anion sublattice of oxychlorides. The unique local structures with abundant bridging and non-bridging oxygen atoms contributes to a highly disordered Na-ion distribution as well as low Na + migration barrier within NTOC, enabling an ultrahigh ionic conductivity of 4.62 mS cm −1 at 25 °C (more than 20 times higher than those of previously reported GNSSEs). Moreover, the excellent formability of glassy NTOC electrolyte and its high electrochemical oxidative stability ensure a favourable electrolyte-electrode interface, contributing to superior cycling stability of ASSNIBs for over 500 cycles at room temperature. The discovery of glassy NTOC electrolyte would reignite research enthusiasm in superionic glassy SSEs based on multi-anion chemistry.

A Thorough Characterization of the Tellurocyanate Anion

Tellurocyanate, [TeCN] − , is the heaviest group 16 congener of the cyanate anion, [OCN] − . Due to the relative instability of the C─Te bond, tellurocyanate chemistry has seen only scarce attention. Here, we present the facile synthesis and thorough characterization of [K@crypt-222][TeCN]. The anion is essentially linear with interatomic distances C─N = 1.150(6)Å and C─Te = 2.051(4)Å, thus approximating a C≡N triple bond and for C─Te a bond order between 1 and 2. Fully 13 C and 15 N labeled [Te 13 C 15 N] − allowed for the extraction of chemical shifts and all possible coupling constants ( 13 C = 77.8 ppm, 15 N = 285.7 ppm, 125 Te = −566 ppm, 1 J 13C-15N = 8 Hz, 1 J 13C-125Te = 748 Hz, 2 J1 5N-125Te = 55 Hz), which were also determined independently by quantum chemical calculations. In the series [ChCN] − (Ch = O─Te), [TeCN] − shows the strongest spin-orbit coupling (SOC) induced heavy-atom effect on the light-atom shielding (SO-HALA-effect). In contrast, 15 N shifts are also well described without considering relativistic effects and/or SOC. Negative-ion photoelectron spectroscopy was used to extract the electron affinity (EA = 3.034 eV) and spin-orbit splitting (3807 cm −1 ) of [TeCN] • . These values continue the trends of falling EA and rising SOC in the series [ChCN] • .

Metal-to-insulator transition in oxide semimetals by anion doping

Dirac semimetals exhibiting nontrivial topological characteristics stand as exemplary parent compounds, offering great promise for the realization of novel electronic states. These materials also serve as a versatile platform for systematically investigating topological quantum phase transitions. In this study, we present compelling evidence of profound structural and transport phase shifts in a recently uncovered oxide Dirac semimetal, SrNbO3, achieved through effective in situ anion doping. Notably, a remarkable increase in resistivity of more than three orders of magnitude at room temperature is observed upon nitrogen-doping. The extent of electronic modulation in SrNbO3 is strongly correlated with the misfit strain, underscoring its phase instability to both chemical doping and crystallographic symmetry variations. Using first-principles calculations, we discern that elevating the level of nitrogen doping induces an upward shift in the conductive bands of SrNbO3-?N?. Consequently, a transition from a metallic state to an insulating state becomes apparent as the nitrogen concentration reaches a threshold of 1/3. This investigation sheds light on the potential of anion engineering in oxide Dirac semimetals, offering pathways for manipulating their physical properties. These insights hold promise for future applications that harness these materials for tailored functionalities.

Investigation of Uranyl Perchlorate Anion Complexes in the Gas Phase via Infrared Multiphoton Dissociation and Collision‐Induced Dissociation

The infrared multiphoton dissociation spectrum of the gas-phase uranyl perchlorate anion ([UO 2 (ClO 4 ) 3 ] − ) was measured. Here, the asymmetric uranyl stretch lies somewhere between 930 and 1030 cm −1 , though it could not be deconvoluted from a closely located perchlorate stretching mode. The experimentally measured spectrum was in good agreement with spectra calculated using density functional theory with the B3LYP and TPSSh functionals and Grimme's D3 dispersion corrections with Becke–Johnson damping. The calculations suggest that the asymmetric uranyl stretch lies in the range of 970–980 cm −1 , about 20–30 cm −1 higher than for the analogous uranyl trinitrato complex and consistent with perchlorate as a weaker ligand than nitrate. Like the uranyl trinitrato anion, fragmentation of [UO 2 (ClO 4 ) 3 ] − by collision-induced dissociation resulted in loss of a ClO 3 • radical to form [UO 3 (ClO 4 ) 2 ] − . Infrared multiphoton dissociation measurements of [UO 3 (ClO 4 ) 2 ] − indicate that the structure of the product ion has an O − ligand bound to the uranyl in a T-arrangement and two perchlorate ligands, matching the findings from uranyl nitrato complexes. The uranyl stretch in this complex was slightly separated from the perchlorate modes and was measured at 906 cm −1 , slightly higher than for the analogous nitrate complex, again consistent with perchlorate as a weaker ligand than nitrate in the gas phase.

Caulobacter lipid A is conditionally dispensable in the absence of fur and in the presence of anionic sphingolipids

Lipid A, the membrane-anchored portion of lipopolysaccharide (LPS), is an essential component of the outer membrane (OM) of nearly all Gram-negative bacteria. Here we identify regulatory and structural factors that together render lipid A nonessential in Caulobacter crescentus. Mutations in the ferric uptake regulator fur allow Caulobacter to survive in the absence of either LpxC, which catalyzes an early step of lipid A synthesis, or CtpA, a tyrosine phosphatase homolog we find is needed for wild-type lipid A structure and abundance. Alterations in Fur-regulated processes, rather than iron status per se, underlie the ability to survive when lipid A synthesis is blocked. Fitness of lipid A-deficient Caulobacter requires an anionic sphingolipid, ceramide phosphoglycerate (CPG), which also mediates sensitivity to the antibiotic colistin. Our results demonstrate that, in an altered regulatory landscape, anionic sphingolipids can support the integrity of a lipid A-deficient OM.

Anion-derived contact ion pairing as a unifying principle for electrolyte design

Enabling new electrochemical technologies requires systems that can operate under ever-more demanding conditions, and progress in energy storage applications reveals tantalizing opportunities to reimagine electrolyte design for performance at extreme potentials. Here, a common thread among these innovations is the formation of significant populations of contact ion pairs (CIPs) in the electrolyte, regardless of the specific cation chemistry or solvent system. The examples summarized in this review suggest that a set of general electrolyte design rules likely exists, where the purposeful selection of anion chemistry can yield CIP structures with tunable control over reaction thermodynamics, kinetics, and interphase chemistry. Identifying the relevant descriptors for high-performance, anion-derived CIP structures can be achieved utilizing a combined experimental and computational approach, aided by machine learning and artificial intelligence, to more rapidly survey the vast combinatorial space available and to enable a new generation of electrolytes for decarbonized electrochemical processes at scale.

Analytical-based simulation approach for an anion exchange membrane fuel cell

An analytical and empirical-based 1-D, non-isothermal, steady-state model for anion exchange membrane fuel cell capable of capturing two-phase phenomena is presented in this study. Coupled multi-physics including mass and charge transport, electrochemical reactions, heat transfer, and two-phase water transport are considered in the model and the simulated results are compared to experimental data. To better represent actual material properties and localized conditions, the model applies multilayer discretization in the gas diffusion electrode to enhance prediction accuracy. The model successfully predicts the baseline performance at 70 °C, 131 kPa abs., 92% RH with pure H 2 /O 2 gas as well as the limiting current at 10% H 2 . The robust simulation approach allows for simplistic and accurate estimation of cell performance without the complications of applying two-phase parameters and expensive computational need for numerical models. In addition, the results from the sensitivity studies of material properties and operating conditions provide valuable insights on water management strategies and optimal component design for advancing anion exchange membrane fuel cell technology.

Anion-exchanged and quaternary ammonium functionalized MIL-101-Cr metal-organic framework (MOF) for ReO 4 – /TcO 4 – sequestration from groundwater

There are few effective technologies for the sequestration of highly water-soluble pertechnetate (TcO 4 – ) from contaminated water despite the urgency of environmental and public health concerns. Here, anion exchanged and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) functionalized MIL-101-Cr-NO 3 were investigated for perrhenate (ReO 4 – ), a surrogate of TcO 4 – , sequestration from artificial groundwater. Cl – , I – , and CF 3 SO 3 – exchanged MIL-101-Cr proved more effective at ReO 4 – removal than the parent MIL-101-Cr-F. Compared to the parent framework, CTAB functionalized MIL-101-Cr-NO 3 increased ReO 4 – removal capacity from 39 to 139 mg/g, improved the reaction kinetics from ~30 to <10 min to reach full adsorption capacity and the selectivity for ReO 4 – over competing NO 3 – , CO 3 2– , SO 4 2– , and Cl – . Spectroscopic data indicated that the chemical speciation of Re in the exchanged MIL-101-Cr remained ReO 4 – , indicating synergistic sequestration through both anion exchange and non-ion exchange binding with the positively charged ligand of CTAB. These studies foreshadow potential applications of MOFs for the remediation of 99 TcO 4 – from contaminated environments.

Long-term durability test of highly efficient membrane electrode assemblies for anion exchange membrane seawater electrolyzers

Direct seawater electrolysis faces fundamental electrochemical challenges, such as suppression of chlorine adsorption and/or evolution reactions that poison the current state-of-the-art anode catalysts and accelerate the degradation of the anion exchange membrane (AEM). The technically favored solution path for addressing these issues includes development of novel selective catalysts and implementation of limited operating conditions. Therefore, development of highly active, selective, cost-effective, and stable seawater-splitting catalysts is required for a successful commercialization of the AEM water electrolyzers (AEMWEs). In this work, we report for the first-time an extended operation for over 1000 h of advanced AEMWEs, operating directly with seawater. To fabricate the membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs), catalyst coated electrodes (CCEs) are assembled with Sustainion® X37-50 grade T anion exchange membranes. The anode CCEs are fabricated by spraying an ink prepared from nanostructured NiFe-layered double hydroxide (LDH) catalyst that are synthesized by the solvothermal method and deposited directly onto platinized titanium porous transport layers (PTLs). The cathode CCEs are prepared by spraying an ink prepared from commercial Renay-Nickel catalyst onto a nickel fiber felt. As prepared AEM electrolyzer cells operated with seawater and demonstrated better than previously reported in the literature performance of over 1000 h of operation at a constant current density of 300 mA cm –2 .

Anion exchange membranes: The effect of reinforcement in water and electrolyte

Alkaline anion-conducting polymer-based CO 2 electrolysis and water electrolysis are among two emerging renewable energy conversion technologies. Their system design and integration offer promise of lower capital cost due to utilization of low-cost catalysts, in contrast to platinum group metal catalysts required for cation-conducting polymer-based devices. However, a critical component, the polymer electrolyte membrane, remains an obstacle hampering system performance and durability. In this study, commercially-available Sustainion® membranes with and without PTFE-reinforcement were investigated to understand previously unreported origins of improved device performance when compared to alternative membrane chemistries. We report critical membrane properties, such as morphology, thermal stability, as well as temperature-, hydration-, and counter-ion dependent ion conductivity. Moveover, the changes in uptake and conductivity of membranes in supporting electrolytes of K 2 CO 3 and KOH investigated as a function of their concentration. Presence of reinforcement and supporting electrolyte type alter the membrane's transport functionality, which could help guide device design for improved performance. In conclusion, the obtained results not only show how Sustainion® properties change with operating environment for CO 2 and water electrolysis applications, but also provide understanding for internal and external factors controlling anion-exhcnage membrane functionality in electrochemical devices.

Structure design enables stable anionic and cationic redox chemistry in a T2-type Li-excess layered oxide cathode

Coupled with anionic and cationic redox chemistry, Li-rich/excess cathode materials are prospective high-energy-density candidates for the next-generation Li-ion batteries. However, irreversible lattice oxygen loss would exacerbate irreversible transition metal migration, resulting in a drastic voltage decay and capacity degeneration. Herein, a metastable layered Li-excess cathode material, T2-type Li 0.72 [Li 0.12 Ni 0.36 Mn 0.52 ]O 2 , was developed, in which both oxygen stacking arrangement and Li coordination environment fundamentally differ from that in conventional O3-type layered structures. By means of the reversible Li migration processes and structural evolutions, not only can voltage decay be effectively restrained, but also excellent capacity retention can be achieved upon long-term cycling. Moreover, irreversible/reversible anionic/cationic redox activities have been well assigned and quantified by various in/ex-situ spectroscopic techniques, further clarifying the charge compensation mechanism associated with (de)lithiation. These findings of the novel T2 structure with the enhanced anionic redox stability will provide a new scope for the development of high-energy-density Li-rich cathode materials.

Roles of Alkali Metals and Ionic Networks in Directing the Formation of Anionic Metal–Organic Frameworks

Integrating different types of fundamental chemical interactions to direct the self-assembly processes and to control the dimension of the network formed by each type of interactions is a promising strategy to develop advanced functional materials. Here, the ionic interaction of alkali metals (Na, K, Cs) towards multi-functional 2,2’-disulfo-4,4’-oxydibenzoic acid is utilized in two solvent systems, aqueous-amide and uro-amide, to synthesize six novel anionic framework materials with dramatically different features and dimensionalities: (Na 3 [Zn 4 O(L 4- ) 3 (e-murea)(H 2 O) 3 ](H 2 N(CH 3 ) 2 +) 3 (CPM-s1), [Zn 4 O(L 4- ) 3 (DMF)]((NH 2 (CH 3 ) 2 +) 6 ) (CPM-s2), Na 6 [(Zn 2 OH 2 ) 3 (L 3- ) 6 ](H 2 O) 3 (CPM-s3), K 3 [Zn 2 (L 4- ) 2 ](H 2 N(CH 3 ) 2 +)(e-murea) 2 (H 2 O) 3 (CPM-s4), K 4 [Zn(L 3- ) 2 ](H 2 O) 2 (CPM-s5), and Cs 6 [Zn(L 4- ) 2 ](H 2 O) 2 (CPM-s6), L 4- = 2,2’-disulfo-4,4’-oxydibenzoate, DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide, e-murea = 1,3-dimethyl-1-2-imidazolidinone). In CPM-s1 to CPM-s6, the alkali-sulfonate ionic bonding networks transformed from 0D clusters with Na + to 1D chains and 2D sheets with K + , and 3D network with Cs + . These vastly differing ionic domains influenced the coordination modes and spatial arrangements of the metal-carboxylate linkers, which consequently, directed the dimensionality of the coordination networks from 3D with Na + to 1D with Cs + . CPM-s1 and CPM-s2, made from tetrameric Zn 4 O clusters are rare examples of anionic MOF-5-type structures. CPM-s3 features an unprecedented hexameric Zn 6 cluster. Even though a large portion of the charge-balancing cations in these materials would hamper hydrogen bonding networks, some of them still exhibit very high ionic conductivity (e.g. 1.25 x 10 -3 S cm -1 in CPM-s3), suggesting the potential of these materials as solid-state electrolytes.

Measuring Electronic Structure of Multiply Charged Anions to Understand their Chemistry: A Case Study on Gaseous Polyhedral closo-Borate Dianions

Research on multiply charged anions (MCAs) in the gas phase has been intensively performed during the last decades, mainly to understand fundamental molecular physics phenomena, e.g., intramolecular Coulomb repulsion and existence of the repulsive Coulomb barrier. However, the relevance of these investigations with respect to understanding MCAs’ chemistry appears often vague. Here, we discuss how insights on the electronic structure obtained from negative ion photoelectron spectroscopy (NIPES) combined with theoretical calculations and collision induced dissociation can provide fundamental understanding on the intrinsic chemical reactivity of MCAs and their fragments. This is exemplified on our studies on polyhedral closo-borate dianions [BnXn]2- (n = 6, 10, 11, 12; X = H, F-I, CN) and their fragment ions. For example, the rational design of closo-borate dianions with specific electronic properties is described, which leads to generating highly reactive fragments. Depending on the dianionic precursor, these fragments are either tuned to bind noble gases effectively or to activate small molecules like CO and N2. The intrinsic electronic properties of closo-borate dianions are further compared to their electrochemistry in solutions, revealing solvent effects on the redox potentials. Neutral host molecules such as cyclodextrins are found to bind strongly to [BnXn]2-, and gas phase NIPES provides insights on the intrinsic host-guest interactions. Finally, outlooks including the direct NIPES of molecular fragment ions which cannot be generated in the condensed phase and their utilization in preparative mass spectrometry are discussed. High Resolution Photoelectron Spectroscopy of the Acetyl Anion

High-resolution photoelectron spectra of cryogenically cooled acetyl anions (CH 3 CO - ) obtained using slow photoelectron velocity-map imaging are reported. The high resolution of the photoelectron spectrum yields a refined electron affinity of 0.4352 ± 0.0012 eV for the acetyl radical as well as the observation of a new vibronic structure that is assigned based on ab initio calculations. Three vibrational frequencies of the neutral radical are measured to be 1047 ± 3 cm -1 (ν 6 ), 834 ± 2 cm -1 (ν 7 ), and 471 ± 1 cm -1 (ν 8 ). Here this work represents the first experimental measurement of the ν 6 frequency of the neutral. The measured electron affinity is used to calculate a refined value of 1641.35 ± 0.42 kJ mol -1 for the gas-phase acidity of acetaldehyde. Analysis of the photoelectron angular distributions provides insight into the character of the highest occupied molecular orbital of the anion, revealing a molecular orbital with strong d-character. Additionally, details of a new centroiding algorithm based on finite differences, which has the potential to decrease data acquisition times by an order of magnitude at no cost to accuracy, are provided.

Electronic Structure and Anion Photoelectron Spectroscopy of Uranium–Gold Clusters UAu n – , n = 3–7

A collaborative effort between experiment and theory towards elucidating the electronic and molecular structures of uranium-gold clusters is presented. Anion photoelectron spectra of UAu n – (n=3-7) were taken at third (355 nm) and fourth (266 nm) harmonics of a Nd:YAG laser, as well as excimer (ArF 193nm) photon energies, where the experimental adiabatic electron affinities (AEA) and vertical detachment energies (VDE) values were measured. Complementary first principles calculations were subsequently carried out to corroborate experimentally determined electron detachment energies and to determine the geometry and electronic structure for each cluster. Except for the ring-like neutral isomer of UAu 6 where one unpaired electron is spread over the Au atoms, all other neutral and anionic UAu n clusters (n = 3 - 7) were calculated to possess open-shell electrons with the unpaired electrons localized on the central U atom. The smaller clusters closely resemble the analogous UF n species, but significant deviations are seen starting with UAu 5 where a competition between U-Au and Au-Au bonding begins to become apparent. The UAu 6 system appears to mark a transition where Au-Au interactions begin to dominate, where both a ring-like and two heavily distorted octahedral structures around the central U atom are to be nearly isoenergetic. With UAu 7 , only ring-like structures are calculated. Altogether, the calculated electron detachment energies are in good agreement with the experimental values
