Pump Propels Liquid And Gas Separately

Design for pump that handles mixtures of liquid and gas efficiently. Containing only one rotor, pump is combination of centrifuge, pitot pump, and blower. Applications include turbomachinery in powerplants and superchargers in automobile engines. Efficiencies lower than those achieved in separate components. Nevertheless, design is practical and results in low consumption of power.

Advanced Turbine Technology Applications Project (ATTAP)

This report is the fourth in a series of Annual Technical Summary Reports for the Advanced Turbine Technology Applications Project (ATTAP). This report covers plans and progress on ceramics development for commercial automotive applications over the period 1 Jan. - 31 Dec. 1991. Project effort conducted under this contract is part of the DOE Gas Turbine Highway Vehicle System program. This program is directed to provide the U.S. automotive industry the high-risk, long-range technology necessary to produce gas turbine engines for automobiles with reduced fuel consumption, reduced environmental impact, and a decreased reliance on scarce materials and resources. The program is oriented toward developing the high-risk technology of ceramic structural component design and fabrication, such that industry can carry this technology forward to production in the 1990s. The ATTAP test bed engine, carried over from the previous AGT101 project, is being used for verification testing of the durability of next-generation ceramic components, and their suitability for service at Reference Powertrain Design conditions. This document reports the technical effort conducted by GAPD and the ATTAP subcontractors during the fourth year of the project. Topics covered include ceramic processing definition and refinement, design improvements to the ATTAP test bed engine and test rigs and the methodology development of ceramic impact and fracture mechanisms. Appendices include reports by ATTAP subcontractors in the development of silicon nitride and silicon carbide families of materials and processes.

Fuzzy logic controllers: A knowledge-based system perspective

Over the last few years we have seen an increasing number of applications of Fuzzy Logic Controllers. These applications range from the development of auto-focus cameras, to the control of subway trains, cranes, automobile subsystems (automatic transmissions), domestic appliances, and various consumer electronic products. In summary, we consider a Fuzzy Logic Controller to be a high level language with its local semantics, interpreter, and compiler, which enables us to quickly synthesize non-linear controllers for dynamic systems.

On structuring the rules of a fuzzy controller

Since the pioneering work of Zadeh and Mamdani and Assilian, fuzzy logic control has emerged as one of the most active and fruitful research areas. The applications of fuzzy logic control can be found in many fields such as control of stream generators, automatic train operation systems, elevator control, nuclear reactor control, automobile transmission control, etc. In this paper, two new structures of hierarchical fuzzy rule-based controller are proposed to reduce the number of rules in a complete rule set of a controller. In one approach, the overall system is split into sub-systems which are treated independently in parallel. A coordinator is then used to take into account the interactions. This is done via an iterating information exchange between the lower level and the coordinator level. From the point of view of information used, this structure is very similar to central structure in that the coordinator can have at least in principle, all the information that the local controllers have.

Electromechanical systems with transient high power response operating from a resonant ac link

The combination of an inherently robust asynchronous (induction) electrical machine with the rapid control of energy provided by a high frequency resonant ac link enables the efficient management of higher power levels with greater versatility. This could have a variety of applications from launch vehicles to all-electric automobiles. These types of systems utilize a machine which is operated by independent control of both the voltage and frequency. This is made possible by using an indirect field-oriented control method which allows instantaneous torque control all four operating quadrants. Incorporating the ac link allows the converter in these systems to switch at the zero crossing of every half cycle of the ac waveform. This zero loss switching of the link allows rapid energy variations to be achieved without the usual frequency proportional switching loss. Several field-oriented control systems were developed under contract to NASA.

Hybrid equations of motion for flexible multibody systems using quasi-coordinates

A variety of engineering systems, such as automobiles, aircraft, rotorcraft, robots, spacecraft, etc., can be modeled as flexible multibody systems. The individual flexible bodies are in general characterized by distributed parameters. In most earlier investigations they were approximated by some spatial discretization procedure, such as the classical Rayleigh-Ritz method or the finite element method. This paper presents a mathematical formulation for distributed-parameter multibody systems consisting of a set of hybrid (ordinary and partial) differential equations of motion in terms of quasi-coordinates. Moreover, the equations for the elastic motions include rotatory inertia and shear deformation effects. The hybrid set is cast in state form, thus making it suitable for control design.

Measurement of the Forces Acting on Gliders in Towed Flight

The magnitude, the direction, and the fluctuations of tow forces exerted upon gliders by towing them aloft behind an automobile were measured under a variety of conditions covering a range from gentle to severe types of operation. For these tests, the glider towing force did not exceed 1.6 of the gross weight of the glider. V-G records obtained during the towed-flight period as well as during the subsequent return glide to earth showed accelerations in the range from 3 to -1 g. The results of preliminary airplane tow tests are also presented.

Two-stroke-cycle engines for airplanes

Now that the two-stroke-cycle engine has begun to make its appearance in automobiles, it is important to know what services we have a right to expect of it in aeronautics, what conditions must be met by engines of this type for use on airplanes and what has been accomplished.

The Fundamental Principles of High-speed Semi-diesel Engines. Part I: a General Discussion of the Subject of Fuel Injection in Diesel Engines and Detailed Descriptions of Many Types of Injection Nozzles

Three questions relating to the technical progress in the utilization of heavy oils are discussed. The first question considers solid injection in high-speed automobile engines, the second concerns the development of the hot-bulb engine, and the third question relates to the need for a more thorough investigation of the processes on which the formatation of combustible, rapidly-burning mixtures depend.

Pressure Rise, Gas Vibrations and Combustion Noises During the Explosion of Fuels

In the use of piezo-quartz indicators for high-speed automobile engines, the interpretation of pressure-time diagrams made by an oscillograph offers certain difficulties. On the one hand, the scale of the pressure amplitudes is not always the same under all conditions, while, on the other hand, the atmospheric zero line may be shifted from its correct position in the oscillogram. These facts make necessary to verify the readings of the quartz indicators by direct calibration before and after each series of tests and, on the basis of the results, to determine the scale for the oscillograms.

Measurement of visibility from the pilot's cockpit on different airplane types

A process for the measurement of the visibility of airplanes from the pilot's cockpit is developed. The apparatus necessary for the measurements was suitably constructed and measurements of the fields of vision were made with it. The visibilities of six airplanes of different types of construction and use were measured, as well as the visibility of an automobile for comparison. An attempt was made to establish minimum visibility requirements and to express the excellence of visibility by means of a numerical coefficient.
