Emitter Surface Temperature Measurements of a 25-A class Hollow Cathode

Measurements of the emitter surface temperature of a hollow cathode were made using an optical ratio pyrometer. These measurements were performed to provide insight into the effect of various cathode operating parameters on emitter surface peak temperature and temperature distribution

Wire winding increases lifetime of oxide coated cathodes

Refractory-metal heater base wound with a thin refractory metal wire increases the longevity of oxide-coated cathodes. The wire-wound unit is impregnated with the required thickness of metal oxide. This cathode is useful in magnetohydrodynamic systems and in electron tubes.

Tantalum cathode improves electron-beam evaporation of tantalum

Tantalum cathode is used in assembly for electron beam evaporation of tantalum onto a substrate. The cathode and anode are made of pure tantalum rather than tungsten to prevent contamination of the tantalum film deposited on the substrate.

Vapor feeding of liquid metal cathodes

Modified liquid metal cathode apparatus permits vapor feeding in the diffuse-spot pattern mode. Vapor-fed cathode has advantages over liquid-fed systems.

Oxygen-hydrogen fuel cell with an iodine-iodide cathode - A concept

Fuel cell uses a porous cathode through which is fed a solution of iodine in aqueous iodide solution, the anode is a hydrogen electrode. No activation polarization appears on the cathode because of the high exchange-current density of the iodine-iodide electrode.

Cathode for use with low density gases

Method for preventing deterioration of mixed oxide cathodes in low density gas tubes caused by ion bombardment is discussed. Construction of cathode is described and illustration is furnished. Electron emission through space charge to neutralize ion-filled regions is basic process.

Prevention of cathode damage from positive ion bombardment

Mixed alkaline earth oxide compounds deposited into hole at cathode surface center prevent ion back bombardment damage to cathode by reducing oxide layer and by creating metallic diffusion along sides of hole for enhanced electron emission.

A hollow cathode neutralizer for a 30-cm diameter bombardment thruster

Recent improvements in overall thruster performance have imposed new constraints on neutralizer performance. The use of compensated grid extraction system requires a reevaluation of neutralizer position. A series of tests were conducted to determine what effect neutralizer cathode geometry has on performance. The parameters investigated included orifice diameter and length, and cathode diameter. Similar tests investigated open and enclosed keeper geometries. Neutralizer position tests with compensated grids suggested positions approximately 10 cm from the accelerator and radially out of the beam envelope should result in satisfactory performance and long life. Operation at keeper current of 1.5 am resulted in lower total neutralizer power, the elimination of tip heater power, and suitable closed loop control of the neutralizer vaporizer.

Hollow cathode restartable 15 cm diameter ion thruster

The effects of substituting high perveance dished grids for low perveance flat ones on performance variables and plasma properties within a 15 cm modified SERT II thruster are discussed. Results suggest good performance may be achieved as an ion thruster is throttled if the screen grid transparency is decreased with propellant flow rate. Thruster startup tests, which employ a pulsed high voltage tickler electrode between the keeper and the cathode to initiate the discharge, are described. High startup reliability at cathode tip temperatures of about 500 C without excessive component wear over 2000 startup cycles is demonstrated. Testing of a single cusp magnetic field concept of discharge plasma containment is discussed. A theory which explains the observed behavior of the device is presented and proposed thruster modifications and future testing plans are discussed.

CO2 laser cold cathode research results

The construction and processing of four test lasers are discussed, and the test results are assessed. Tests show that the best performance was obtained from cathodes made from internally oxidized Ag-Cu alloys or pure Cu. Due to the cold cathode technology developments, sealed-off 1 w CO2 lasers with gas volumes of only 50 cu cm were duplicated, and have performed satisfactorily for more than 6000 hours.

A hollow cathode neutralizer for a 30-cm diameter bombardment thruster

Recent improvements in overall thrustor performance have imposed new constraints on neutralizer performance. The use of compensated grid extraction system requires a re-evaluation of neutralizer position. In addition a suitable control logic for the neutralizer has proven difficult. A series of tests were conducted to determine what effect neutralizer cathode geometry has on performance. The parameters investigated included orifice diameter and length, and cathode diameter. Similar tests investigated open and enclosed keeper geometries. Neutralizer position tests with compensated grids suggest positions approximately 10 cm from the accelerator and radially out of the beam envelope should result in satisfactory performance and long life. Finally operation at keeper currents of 1.5 amp has resulted in lower total neutralizer power, the elimination of tip heater power, and suitable closed loop control of the neutralizer vaporizer.

Development of gold alloy catalyst cathode for alkaline electrolyte fuel cells

A program for the development of improved catalyst and Teflon-bonded electrode structures using this improved catalyst is described, for use in fuel cell cathodes. It was found that Au-Pt was superior to the traditional platinum black as a catalyst. The impetus to the program was provided by the discovery that a life-limiting mechanism on the old catalyst was the gradual dissolution of platinum from the cathode and subsequent redeposition in the electrolyte-containing matrix.

High reliability cathode heaters for ion thrusters

A number of space missions were proposed which utilize 30-cm mercury bombardment ion thrusters and also require a large number of thruster restarts. A test program was carried out to determine thermal cycle life of several different cathode heater designs. Plasma/flame sprayed heaters and swaged type heaters were tested. Four of the five plasma/flame sprayed heaters tested failed in a comparatively short time. Four tantalum swaged heaters that were brazed to the tantalum cathode tube were successfully tested and met the goals that were set at the start of the test.

Physical processes in hollow cathodes

Detailed measurements of magnetic field and floating potential inside large hollow cathodes in a quasi-steady MPD arc facility reveal a cavity plasma that is concentrated near the orifice for most operating conditions. However, for certain combinations of current and mass flow, the peak surface current density penetrates into the cavity up to one diameter upstream of the orifice. These measured distributions are consistent with a conduction model which suggests that maximum current penetration, and the more efficient cathode emission which accompanies it, occurs when the dominant mean free path for electron energy exchange is comparable to the cavity diameter.
