Cost-efficient finite-volume high-order schemes for compressible magnetohydrodynamics
We present an efficient dimension-by-dimension finite-volume method which solves the adiabatic magnetohydrodynamics equations at high discretization order, using the constrained-transport approach on Cartesian grids. Results are presented up to tenth order of accuracy. The algorithmic architecture of this method is very close to that of commonly employed second-order schemes: it requires only one reconstructed value per face for each computational cell, independently of the scheme's order. This property is highly beneficial for the numerical efficiency. It results from reusing the required values already available in neighboring grid cells, in contrast to standard algorithms that require a number of reconstructions and evaluations which increases with the scheme's order of accuracy. At a given resolution, these high-order schemes present significantly less numerical dissipation than commonly employed lower-order approaches. Thus, results of comparable accuracy are achievable at a substantially coarser resolution, yielding overall performance gains. We also present a way to include physical dissipative terms: viscosity, magnetic diffusivity and cooling functions, respecting the finite-volume and constrained-transport frameworks. Benefits of this method are shown through applications in turbulent flows.

High-temperature concomitant metal-insulator and spin-reorientation transitions in a compressed nodal-line ferrimagnet Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6
Symmetry-protected band degeneracy, coupled with a magnetic order, is the key to realizing novel magnetoelectric phenomena in topological magnets. While the spin-polarized nodal states have been identified to introduce extremely-sensitive electronic responses to the magnetic states, their possible role in determining magnetic ground states has remained elusive. Here, taking external pressure as a control knob, we show that a metal-insulator transition, a spin-reorientation transition, and a structural modification occur concomitantly when the nodal-line state crosses the Fermi level in a ferrimagnetic semiconductor Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6 . These unique pressure-driven magnetic and electronic transitions, associated with the dome-shaped Tc variation up to nearly room temperature, originate from the interplay between the spin-orbit coupling of the nodal-line state and magnetic frustration of localized spins. Our findings highlight that the nodal-line states, isolated from other trivial states, can facilitate strongly tunable magnetic properties in topological magnets.

Pressure-induced transformation of Nb 2 O 5 under shock compression from first principles
Ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations were carried out to investigate the equation of state of Nb 2 O 5 and its pressure-density relationship under shock conditions. Here, the focus of this study is on the monoclinic B-Nb 2 O 5 (C2/c) polymorph. Enthalpy calculations from AIMD trajectories at 300 K show that the pressure-induced transformation between the thermody-namically most stable crystalline monoclinic parent phase H-Nb 2 O 5 (P2/m) and B-Nb 2 O 5 occurs at ~1.9 GPa. This H→B transition is energetically more favorable than the H→L(Pmm2) pressure-induced transition recently observed at ~5.9-9.0 GPa. The predicted shock properties of Nb 2 O 5 polymorphs are also compared to their Nb and NbO 2 counterparts to assess the impact of niobium oxidation on shock response.
