Open Source GIS Connectors to NASA GES DISC Satellite Data

The NASA Goddard Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Center (GES DISC) houses a suite of high spatiotemporal resolution GIS data including satellite-derived and modeled precipitation, air quality, and land surface parameter data. The data are valuable to various GIS research and applications at regional, continental, and global scales. On the other hand, many GIS users, especially those from the ArcGIS community, have difficulties in obtaining, importing, and using our data due to factors such as the variety of data products, the complexity of satellite remote sensing data, and the data encoding formats. We introduce a simple open source ArcGIS data connector that significantly simplifies the access and use of GES DISC data in ArcGIS.

Internal Electrostatic Discharge Tests of Micro-D Connectors for Planned Europa Mission

NASA has planned a mission to study Jupiter’s moon, Europa. The mission would place a spacecraft into orbit around Jupiter, performing nominally 45 flybys of the moon. The suite of instruments onboard the spacecraft would investigate Europa’s potential to sustain life, studying the moon’s atmosphere, water-ice crust, suspected subsurface ocean, and rocky interior. The radiation environment at Europa’s orbit is severe and presents a significant threat to the spacecraft. There are several radiation effects that could be problematic, one of which is internal charging. Problems due to internal charging arise when high energy electrons penetrate the spacecraft and deposit within onboard dielectrics or floating metals. These charges can build up over time, generating electric fields that exceed the breakdown strength of materials in the region. A rapid discharge of the stored charges may occur, sending current pulses into electronics and potentially damaging them. An Internal Electrostatic Discharge (IESD) design environment was created for the planned Europa mission [Kim et al, in press]. The IESD design environment is meant to characterize the part of the radiation environment that poses the largest threat to the spacecraft with respect to internal charging. The environment was based off of electron data gathered by the Galileo spacecraft. Over the past year, the internal charging threat to several hardware components of the planned Europa Clipper spacecraft have been characterized using simulations and/or tests. The subject report documents one such test on Micro-D connectors.

Electrical connectors including glass seals and methods of fabrication

An electrical connector comprises an outer shell, at least one pin, and an insulating seal. The outer shell includes at least one side wall defining a cavity and having an inner surface. The outer shell is formed from electrically conductive material. The pin is positioned within the cavity and is also formed from electrically conductive material. The insulating seal is configured to provide electrical isolation of the pin and fills the cavity between the inner surface of the side wall and the pin. The insulating seal is formed from glass doped with a transition metal oxide.

Orbital tube flare for tubing connectors

Marshall engineering personnel have developed and are now refining a new and unique method of mechanically flaring tubing. The system eliminates the use of the conventional split backing die which is used with most tube-flaring equipment. The Marshall-developed tool is adapted for use on standard Leonard 3-CP-HD flaring machines. The stationary split backing die is replaced in function with a die ring, whose i.d.-surface rolls or orbits around the o.d. of the tube flare zone. An i.d.-flaring cone moves axially and forces the metal against the rolling die to form the flare. Major advantages of this system are the elimination of flash, or split die marks, on the back angle of the flare, and improved flare-surface finishes, permitting more uniform sealing characteristics and improvements of the total geometric configuration of the flare as required by the MSFC specification MC-146. The Orbital Adapter system of tooling is currently being used to manufacture flared tube hardware for the Saturn V S-IO space launch vehicle at MSFC, for the Agena space launch vehicle (used for the Gemini project) at Lockheed, Sunnyvale, for LEM checkout equipment for Grumman, and for the Saturn S-IV-B space launch vehicle by Douglas Aircraft Company. Several other aerospace firms are evaluating the system for possible incorporation on their tube flaring requirements. Marshall engineers are now concentrating their efforts on refining and reducing the total cost of the overall system.

Independent Metadata Update VOL Connector for HDF5 (IMM VOL) v0.1

We have built a new framework that enables independent metadata updates within HDF5 files. Our framework includes the following components: an overlay network that's optimized for 1-to-All and All-to-All communication; root-less/server-less Bcast and AllReduce operations for reduced synchronization; a distributed consensus-making platform; an execution order keeping system, and a progress engine for generic threadless concurrence handling.

Asynchronous I/O VOL Connector (AsyncVOL) v0.1

Asynchronous I/O is becoming increasingly popular with the large amount of data access required by scientific applications. They can take advantage of an asynchronous interface by scheduling I/O as early as possible and overlap computation or communication with I/O operations, which hides the cost associated with I/O and improves the overall performance.

Deep Lynx Unidirectional Network Connector

The Deep Lynx UNC is a small utility written in Python that uses only basic Python libraries and the Deep Lynx Python Software Development Kit (SDK). It queries Deep Lynx for tasks that indicate some data to be run in the UNC's environment. Once a task is acquired, the UNC retrieves the associated data and provides it to some other application for processing, waits for output, and sends the output from the other application to Deep Lynx. As data flows only from the UNC to Deep Lynx, this software solves the problem of connecting Deep Lynx with applications and resources that exist in a network where the network can reach Deep Lynx, but Deep Lynx cannot reach that network (unidirectional network).

Packaged SMIP Smart Connector for Ectron Computers

The project provides appropriate software modules, which allow to represent a physical oven as a virtual oven model. For that a virtual oven model is developed, which defines oven parameters like temperature, power consumption but also the door status and the humidity. To connect a real oven to the virtual model for monitoring and control multiple sensors are used to collect data. Using a MQTT based data connection the measured parameters are send to the CESMII environment for further processing and monitoring. Within this project the CESMII model for the general oven was developed and provided. Further the sensors were connected to the actual oven. The sensor data is collected via means of a MQTT based data transfer protocol to a gateway module. The gateway module then translates and transfers the collected data to the actual CESMII oven model.
