An assessment of Landsat data acquisition history on identification and area estimation of corn and soybeans

During the past decade, numerous studies have demonstrated the potential of satellite remote sensing for providing accurate and timely crop area information. This study assessed the impact of Landsat data acquisition history on classification and area estimation accuracy of corn and soybeans. Multitemporally registered Landsat MSS data from four acquisitions during the 1978 growing season were used in classification of eight sample segments in the U.S. Corn Belt. The results illustrate the importance of selecting Landsat acquisitions based on spectral differences in crops at certain growth stages.

Upgrade of the CAESium-iodide scintillator ARray (CAESAR) electronics and data acquisition system for optimized performance at FRIB

Here, we report on the upgrade of the electronics and data acquisition (DAQ) of the high-efficiency CAESium-iodide scintillator ARray (CAESAR) at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB). With the on-going capability ramp-up of FRIB, CAESAR is expected to continue to be an in-demand -ray spectrometer owing to its high detection efficiency, compactness, and modularity, enabling easy integration with additional detection and DAQ systems. Within this context, the CAESAR electronics and DAQ were upgraded to remove obsolete modules, enhance the ease of integration with external instruments, and optimize the DAQ live time. We present the comprehensive results from offline (γ-ray sources) and online (in-beam experiment) commissioning, characterizing the performance of CAESAR’s new electronics and DAQ.

A brief review of ionospheric scintillation fading effects as observed in NASA satellite tracking and data acquisition networks.

Discussion of some results of the effects of ionospheric irregularities on NASA satellite tracking and data acquisition operations. Ionospheric scintillation fading produced by irregularities has been observed at 136 MHz (vhf), 400 MHz (uhf), 1550 MHz (L-band) and 1700 to 2200 MHz (S-band). Details of these observations are presented. Vhf scintillation effects are evident in both auroral and equatorial regions. Fading effects decrease with increasing radio frequency in the auroral region. The same frequency dependence for fading is not observed in the equatorial region. Although there is a seasonal and diurnal character to scintillation in the equatorial region, fading effects are usually more severe than in the auroral region for a given radio frequency. Space diversity measurements indicate that reasonable solutions for vhf telemetry problems are available for either region. Space diversity should provide a solution for microwave frequencies as well. Ionospheric fading amplitude for 1700 MHz is relatively small in the auroral region. In the equatorial region amplitude fading levels for 1550-MHz signals from ATS-5 are often much larger than expected. Observations of the Apollo Lunar Surface Experiment Package (ALSEP) operating at 2300 MHz observed near the geomagnetic equator show fading peaks in excess of 15 dB.

Data acquisition from a crystal growth furnace

Digital acquisition from a furnace for growing the lead tin telluride crystal based on Asyst software is described. It is shown that the use of Asyst for the acquisition of experimental data makes it possible to handle large amounts of data and to drastically reduce the time required for displaying the data from several hours to less than 5 minutes.

Aerial Data Acquisition Platform for Firefront Monitoring

Over the past century, wildfires have grown in their destructive tendencies, and have become a threat to civilian lives, infrastructure, and emergency officials. The 2021 NASA Academy at Langley Research Center was tasked with utilizing NASA technology to increase situational awareness and communication amongst both incident officials and the public. With this mission in mind, the Data Acquisition sub-team chose to develop an outline for a small unmanned aircraft system (UAS) package including required specifications, a payload layout, and mission planning. The proposed system would be capable of mapping firelines at a speed of about 9.8 m/s for periods of up to 3.6 hours. The system would also be able to gather near real time data at a lower cost than currently utilized systems.
