Pneumonia After Bacterial or Viral Infection Preceded or Followed by Radiation Exposure: A Reanalysis of Older Radiobiologic Data and Implications for Low-Dose Radiation Therapy for Coronavirus Disease 2019 Pneumonia

Currently, there are about 15 ongoing clinical studies on low dose radiation therapy for Coronavirus Disease 2019 pneumonia. One of the underlying assumptions is that irradiation of 0.5 to 1.5 Gy is effective at ameliorating viral pneumonia. We aimed to reanalyze all available experimental radiobiologic data to assess evidence for such amelioration.

Biochemical Control and Toxicity Outcomes of Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy Versus Low-Dose-Rate Brachytherapy in the Treatment of Low- and Intermediate-Risk Prostate Cancer

Low-dose-rate (LDR) brachytherapy and stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) have both shown acceptable outcomes in the treatment of low- and intermediate-risk prostate cancer. Minimal data have been published directly comparing rates of biochemical control and toxicity with these 2 modalities. We hypothesize that LDR and SBRT will provide similar rates of biochemical control.

Clinician Attitudes to Using Low-Dose Radiation Therapy to Treat COVID-19 Lung Disease

Current treatments for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) lung disease have limited efficacy. Low-dose radiation therapy (LDRT) has received both interest and criticism as a potential treatment for this condition. In this qualitative study we explored clinicians’ perspectives to identify barriers to testing LDRT in clinical trials and implementing it in clinical practice.

Deciphering Time-Dependent DNA Damage Complexity, Repair, and Oxygen Tension: A Mechanistic Model for FLASH-Dose-Rate Radiation Therapy

Irradiation with ultrahigh dose rates (FLASH) has reemerged as a promising radiation therapy approach to effectively lower potential damage burden on normal tissue without sacrificing tumor control. However, the large number of recent FLASH studies have been conducted under vastly different experimental conditions and circumstances (ie, investigated biological endpoint, radiation quality, and environmental oxygen level), with unverified biological mechanisms of action and unexplored interplay effect of the main dependencies. To facilitate radiobiological investigation of FLASH phenomena and assessment of clinical applicability, we present an extension of the mechanistic radiobiological model “UNified and VERSatile bio response Engine” (UNIVERSE).

Phase 3 Multi-Center, Prospective, Randomized Trial Comparing Single-Dose 24 Gy Radiation Therapy to a 3-Fraction SBRT Regimen in the Treatment of Oligometastatic Cancer

This prospective phase 3 randomized trial was designed to test whether ultra high single-dose radiation therapy (24 Gy SDRT) improves local control of oligometastatic lesions compared to a standard hypofractionated stereotactic body radiation therapy regimen (3 × 9 Gy SBRT). The secondary endpoint was to assess the associated toxicity and the impact of ablation on clinical patterns of metastatic progression.

Intraoperative Electron Beam Radiation Therapy (IOERT) Versus High-Dose-Rate Intraoperative Brachytherapy (HDR-IORT) in Patients With an R1 Resection for Locally Advanced or Locally Recurrent Rectal Cancer

Intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT), delivered by intraoperative electron beam radiation therapy (IOERT) or high-dose-rate intraoperative brachytherapy (HDR-IORT), may reduce the local recurrence rate in patients with locally advanced and locally recurrent rectal cancer (LARC and LRRC, respectively). The aim of this study was to compare the oncological outcomes between both IORT modalities in patients with LARC or LRRC who underwent a microscopic irradical (R1) resection.

Characterization of Dosimetric Differences in Strut-Adjusted Volume Implant Treatment Plans Calculated With TG-43 Formalism and a Model-Based Dose Calculation Algorithm

To comprehensively characterize dosimetric differences between calculations with a commercial model-based dose calculation algorithm (MBDCA) and the TG-43 formalism in application to accelerated partial breast irradiation (APBI) with the strut-adjusted volume implant (SAVI) applicator.

Low Doses of Radiation Increase the Immunosuppressive Profile of Lung Macrophages During Viral Infection and Pneumonia

Severe pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) have been described in patients with severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Recently, early clinical data reported the feasibility of low doses of radiation therapy (RT) in the treatment of ARDS in patients with severe COVID-19. However, the involved mechanisms remained unknown.
