Kinetic-j : A computational kernel for solving the linearized Vlasov equation applied to calculations of the kinetic, configuration space plasma current for time harmonic wave electric fields

We present the Kinetic-j code, a computational kernel for evaluating the linearized Vlasov equation withapplication to calculating the kinetic plasma response (current) to an applied time harmonic wave electricfield. This code addresses the need for a configuration space evaluation of the plasma current to enablekinetic full-wave solvers for waves in hot plasmas to move beyond the limitations of the traditional Fourierspectral methods. We benchmark the kernel via comparison with the standard k-space forms of the hotplasma conductivity tensor.

Supercritical cryo-compressed hydrogen storage for fuel cell electric buses

Liquid hydrogen (LH 2 ) truck delivery and storage at dispensing sites is likely to play an important role in an emerging H 2 infrastructure. Here, we analyzed the performance of single phase, supercritical, on-board cryo-compressed hydrogen storage (CcH 2 ) with commercially-available LH 2 pump enabled single-flow refueling for application to fuel cell electric buses (FCEB). We conducted finite-element stress analyses of Type 3 CcH 2 tanks using ABAQUS for carbon fiber requirement and Fe-Safe for fatigue life. The results from these analyses indicate that, from the standpoint of weight, volume and cost, 2-mm 316 stainless steel liner is preferred to aluminium 6061 alloy in meeting the required 15,000 charge-discharge cycles for 350–700 bar storage pressures. Compared to the Type 3, 350 bar, ambient-temperature H 2 storage systems in current demonstration FCEBs, 500-bar CcH 2 storage system is projected to achieve 91% improvement in gravimetric capacity, 175% improvement in volumetric capacity, 46% reduction in carbon fiber composite mass, and 21% lower system cost, while exceeding >7 day loss-free dormancy with initially 85%-full H 2 tank.

Electric double layer capacitance for ionic liquids in nanoporous electrodes: Effects of pore size and ion composition

The energy density of an electric double layer (EDL) capacitor, a type of supercapacitor, depends on the ion distribution within the micropores of electrodes that are typically made of amorphous carbon. By using coarse-grained models and the classical density functional theory, we investigate the distributions of ionic species among different idealized nanopores in contact with an asymmetric ionic liquid mixture and the effects of the bulk electrolyte composition on capacitive energy storage. We find that a charged pore is always small-ion selective, provided all ions have the same valence and similar non-electrostatic interactions. While small ions enhance both the EDL capacitance and the accessibility of micropores, an ionic mixture containing ions of different sizes may yield a capacitance higher than those corresponding to pure ionic liquids. Furthermore, the increased capacitance may be attributed to more efficient ion packing near the charged surface. At certain conditions, the improvement is on a par with the anomalous capacitance rise for pure ionic liquids in electrodes with ultranarrow pores.

Assigning value to energy storage systems at multiple points in an electrical grid

The ability to define the potential value that energy storage systems (ESS) could generate through various applications in electric power systems, and an understanding of how these values change due to variations in locations, ESS performance and parameters, market structure, utility structures, and valuation methodologies is highly important in advancing ESS deployment. This paper presents the outcome of an effort to assign benefits values, or more precisely ranges of values, to major ESS applications, and summarize and evaluate the capabilities of several available tools currently used to estimate value for specific ESS deployments.

Theory of spin-coherent electrical transport through a defect spin state in a metal/insulator/ferromagnet tunnel junction undergoing ferromagnetic resonance

In this work, we describe the coherent dynamics of electrical transport through a localized spin-dependent state, such as is associated with a defect spin, at the interface of a ferromagnet and a nonmagnetic material during ferromagnetic resonance. As the ferromagnet magnetic moment precesses, charge carriers are dynamically spin filtered by the localized state, leading to a dynamic spin accumulation on the defect. Local effective magnetic fields modify the precession of a spin on the defect, which also modifies the time-integrated total charge current through the defect. Lastly, we thus identify a form of current-detected spin resonance that reveals the local magnetic environment of a carrier spin located at a defect, and thus potentially the defect’s identity.

Electronic Scanning Strategies in Adaptive Electrical Capacitance Volume Tomography: Tradeoffs and Prospects

Electrical Capacitance Volume Tomography (ECVT) has been applied for imaging of multiphase flows found in industrial applications. The ill-posed nature of the image reconstruction problem in ECVT and the consequent low resolution can be alleviated by employing electronic scanning enabled by electrode segmentation and reconfiguration during data acquisition. Here we study electronic scanning strategies that mimic physical rotation and shifting of the sensor along its symmetry axis. First, we study the feasibility of electronic scanning by analyzing the capacitance transducer circuit in SPICE. Then, we simulate electronic scanning using the finite element method for different electrode shapes, for which we compare the image reconstruction results and acquisition time. We find a noticeable improvement in image resolution for the scanning cases over conventional ECVT. Lastly, among the scanning cases, we emphasize a particular electrode shape that provides the best image resolution along with the minimal amount of acquisition time.

Electric Grid Reliability in an Era of Unprecedented Uncertainty: A Review of Advances in Electric Sector Resource Adequacy Assessment and Planning

Recent changes to the principal causes of energy shortage events on the electric grid have necessitated are thinking of paradigms for resource adequacy (RA) assessment and the related topic of procurement of a reliable portfolio. Prior studies have laid out elements of a modern paradigm for these planning activities, but there does not exist a comprehensive overview of the topic spanning academic and gray literature, and the relationship of these suggested paradigms to methods used in industry has also not been surveyed. In this paper we review recent literature establishing best practices for RA assessment and reliable portfolio procurement, and survey current practices used in industry in relation to these best practices. We establish seven key best practices for RA assessment, cover a modern methodology for capacity accreditation, and find that industry practices are not far behind the identified best practices, though some key gaps remain. We also present a suggested agenda for both academic research on the topic and opportunities for advancement in the industry.

Economic Analysis of an Electric Thermal Energy Storage System Using Solid Particles for Grid Electricity Storage

As renewable power generation becomes the mainstream new-built energy source, energy storage will become an indispensable need to complement the uncertainty of renewable resources to firm the power supply. When phasing out fossil-fuel power plants to meet the carbon neutral utility target in the midcentury around the world, large capacity of energy storage will be needed to provide reliable grid power. The renewable power integration with storage can support future carbon-free utility and has several significant impacts including increasing the value of renewable generation to the grid, improving the peak-load response, and balancing the electricity supply and demand. Long-duration energy storage (10–100 hours duration) can potentially complement the reduction of fossil-fuel baseload generation that otherwise would risk grid security when a large portion of grid power comes from variable renewable sources. Current energy storage methods based on pumped storage hydropower or batteries have many limitations. Thermal energy storage (TES) has unique advantages in scale and siting flexibility to provide grid-scale storage capacity. A particle-based TES system has promising cost and performance for the future growing energy storage needs. This paper introduces the system and components required for the particle TES to be technically and economically competitive. A technoeconomic analysis based on preliminary component designs and performance shows that the particle TES integrated with an efficient air-Brayton combined cycle power system can provide power for several days by low-cost, high-performance storage cycles. It addresses grid storage needs by enabling large-scale grid integration of intermittent renewables like wind and solar, thereby increasing their grid value. The design specifications and cost estimations of major components in a commercial scale system are presented in this paper. The cost model provides insights for further development and cost comparison with competing technologies.

Multilayered Film Capacitors for Advanced Power Electronics and Electric Motors for Electric Traction Drives

Biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) film capacitors are the most suitable technology for high voltage, high temperature, and high ripple current power electronic systems in high performance electric vehicles (EVs). These capacitors, however, occupy 1/4th to 1/3rd of the power electronic unit and have a 50% voltage derating above 85 °C due to their drastically deteriorated breakdown strength and lifetime at high temperature. Development of a new dielectric material system for capacitors to increase temperature use and reduce size is critical in many EV related applications. Multilayer dielectric film developed by PolymerPlus and team has demonstrated improved dielectric constant and breakdown strength as compared to BOPP films. In this program, several film formulations were developed and investigated for dielectric performance and further down-selected for production scale up. Because this technology uses commercial polymers, fabrication of film rolls to demonstrate scalability for initial capacitor fabrication trials was successfully achieved. The film production feasibility, metallization and capacitor prototype fabrication was successfully demonstrated in Year 1 of the program. In Year 2 of the program, film production scale-up leading to significantly large film quantities for metallization and capacitor fabrication led to 600 µF size capacitors. Capacitor characterization was also completed during this year.

Integrated Electric Drive with HV 2 Modular Electric Machine and SiC Based Power Converters (Final Report)

An innovative high performance, high speed electric drive is designed, fabricated and tested. The drive is based on the modular multilevel converter (MMC) topology and is synthesized using power electronic building blocks (submodules) that utilize the newest generation of silicon-carbide (SiC) semiconductors. Power modules from two suppliers are investigated, characterized and the one showing better performance selected. A prototype MMC submodule is designed, built and tested in the lab. Simultaneously, control hardware and software are implemented and tested using real-time simulators. After verification of each of the subsystems, all subsystems are integrated to form a DC/AC converter-based drive. Multiple configurations are assembled and tested, and operation in variable voltages and frequencies, up to 4,160 V (line-to-line, rms), 140 A (rms) and 0-1,000 Hz is achieved. The efficiency of the drive system accomplished in the project is higher than 99.2% and the volume is 70% smaller than that of state-of-the art drives made using conventional technologies.

Development and Evaluation of Distributed Energy Resource Device Models: Electric Vehicles, Electric Water Heaters, and Commercial Refrigeration Systems

In order to validate distributed energy resource (DER) models operated with grid services in the GMLC 1.4.2 team’s February (GMLC 2019a) and July (GMLC 2019b) reports, a test and measurement program using actual DER devices was conducted by national laboratories for three devices: (1) electric vehicles (EVs), (2) water heaters, and (3) commercial refrigeration. Test procedures were developed and carried out to identify the mathematical models and their parameters that describe the operational function, characterize the physics, and obey transient response of the devices. This report focuses on the experimental results obtained to develop and verify simulations of three specific EV models. This section summarizes elements of the mathematical model and shows the necessity data collected from the EVs while charging and discharging (driving). In the course of the study, we found it necessary to make some modifications to the model to deal with observed transient behavior. Section 1.2 details the model assumptions and equations, Section 1.3 provides details of the EVs tested, Section 1.4 outlines the test procedures developed for the projects, and Section 1.5 presents the experimental results obtained for the three different EVs tested and how these results compare to the models running the same test profiles.
