The data collected from the results of battery reconditioning accumulated from three different spacecraft programs are summarized. The basic design characteristics of the programs are also presented.
The correction for temperature response of optical radiometers implies access to their working temperature (i.e., either the internal or ambient one with the radiometers in thermal equilibrium). With specific reference to a class of widely used hyperspectral radiometers lacking a thermistor to measure the internal temperature, this work investigated the potential for operational corrections relying on the ambient temperature derived from the radiometer dark digital counts. With the objective to keep within approximately 1% the uncertainty for radiometric corrections in the 400–800-nm spectral range, findings showed the applicability of the method for ambient temperatures higher than approximately 30°C. The alternative use of an ambient temperature proxy, determined from the air temperature incremented by a few degrees Celsius, was shown a valid solution to constrain the uncertainty of radiometric corrections to within 1% over the entire 0°–40°C interval.

An analysis was made of current heat flow data and thermal models of lunar evolution which satisfy the diverse information that has accumulated on internal processes.
The principal known types of lunar rocks are briefly reviewed, and their chemical relationships discussed. In the suite of low-KREEP highland rocks, Fe/(Fe + Mg) in the normative mafic minerals increases and the albite content of normative plagioclase decreases as the total amount of normative plagioclase increases, the opposite of the trend predicted by the Bowen reaction principle. Lunar highland samples analyzed are uniformly distributed in this sequence, in which normative plagioclase contents range from ~ 40 percent to ~ 100 percent. The distribution of compositions of rocks from terrestrial layered mafic intrusives is substantially different: here the analyses fall in several discrete clusters (anorthositic rocks, norites, granophyres and ferrogabbros, ultramafics), and the chemical trends noted above are not reproduced. It is suggested that the observed trends in lunar highland rocks could be produced by crystal fractionation in a deep global surface magma system if (1) plagioclase tended to float, upon crystallization, and (2) the magma was kept agitated and well mixed (probably by thermal convection) until crystallization was far advanced and relatively little residual liquid was left. When such a system was finally immobilized, the Fe-, Na-rich residual liquid would produce Fe-rich mafic minerals in the upper levels of the system, but could not much alter the composition of abundant calcic plagioclase. Conversely, the same liquid would produce sodic plagioclase deep in the sequence, but could not much alter the composition of abundant magnesian mafic minerals. After the crustal system solidified, but before extensive cooling had developed a thick, strong lithosphere, mantle convection was able to draw portions of the lunar anorthositic crust down into the mantle in a manner analogous to the present-day behavior of the terrestrial mantle and crust. At depth, the crustal material was heated; KREEP-rich norite was extracted by partial melting and erupted at the surface as a lava, analogous to terrestrial andesite eruptions.

The SKYNET 4A spacecraft is a three-axis stabilized geostationary earth-orbiting military communications satellite which was launched on 1 Jan. 1990 aboard a Titan 3 launch vehicle. The power subsystem is a twin bus, twin battery semi-regulated system and is equipped with one 28-cell, 35 Ampere-hour battery per bus. The cells were manufactured by Gates Aerospace Batteries of Gainesville, FL, and the batteries were built, tested and integrated by British Aerospace Space Systems Ltd. This paper presents a brief survey of the first six years of on-station operation and the operational battery management strategy that has been adopted. Thermal management constraints have led to an unconventional battery operational regime. However, no sign of degradation is evident and the observed spacecraft battery performance remains nominal.

The setup and testing of battery systems are described. Basic control mode, basic block diagrams and circuitry are given.
A generalized law of erosion, in nondimensional form, is proposed. The aforementioned explicitly gives an account of the nature and the microstructure of the material impacted, the angle of impact of the particles, and their hardness. The erosion behavior of various steels, pig iron, and cast iron is examined as well as the behavior of new ordered intermetallic materials, Fe-25% Al-(Zr, Cr, B). The concern of such alloys in an erosion-corrosion environment is shown. --- Une loi généralisée d'usure par érosion, sous forme non dimensionnelle, est proposée. Celle-ci rend compte explicitement de la nature et de la microstructure du matériau impacté, de l'angle d'impact des particules, de leur acuité at de leur durete. Le comportement à l'érosion de divers aciers et fontes est examiné ainsi que la tenue de nouveaux matériaux intermétalliques ordonnés Fe-25% Al - (Zr, Cr, B). L'interet de tels alliages dans des environnements agressifs du type érosion-corrosion est montré. Mots clés: usure, érosion, modèle, matériaux métalliques, intermétalliques Fe-Al.
The present volumes contain papers presented at the Soviet-American Conference on the Cosmochemistry of the Moon and Planets held in Moscow from the 4th to the 8th of June, 1974. The basic goal of the conference was consideration of the origin of the planets of the solar system, based on the physical and chemical data obtained by study of the material of the Moon and planets. Papers at the conference were presented in the following sessions: 1. Differentiation of the material of the Moon and planets 2. The thermal history of the Moon 3. Lunar gravitation and magnetism 4. Chronology of the Moon, planets, and meteorites 5. The role of exogenic factors in the formation of the lunar surface 6. Cosmochemical hypotheses about the origin and evolution of the Moon and planets 7. New data about the planets Mercury, Venus, Mars, and Jupiter The results presented in the papers are of exceptional scientific interest since on the one hand they contain new knowledge about the matter of the Moon and planets, while on the other they summarize significant material accumulated during recent years as the result of spacecraft missions to the Moon, Venus, Mars, Mercury, and Jupiter.

The Symposium was intended to provide for presentation and discussion of significant developments in the theory of thermal radiation of solids and in our understanding of the important effects of surfaces and interfaces and of surface imperfections on this radiation, of the effects of the space environment on radiation properties, and of the application of this information to the thermal designer's problems. Presentation of data as such-for example, absorptances and emittances of various types of coatings-was not considered a primary purpose of the Symposium; nevertheless, as the reader will observe, an appreciable amount of significant data of this type is contained in some of the papers. Developments in measurement techniques were also not considered basic to the main theme, especially since it was the theme of the preceding Symposium. However, because the subject remains of continuing concern, one session was devoted to it. These Proceedings contain all the papers presented orally at the Symposium together with the discussions that followed them, and, in addition, nine papers that were accepted for publication only. Each paper was reviewed by the session chairman and by the editor, and any apparent technical discrepancies were called to the attention of the author for clarification. As a further aid to the reader, the editor has tried to achieve some degree of uniformity in organization and format of the papers—at least to the extent permitted by the subject matter, and he has also striven for clarity and readability of the text. In this task he has had not only the cooperation of the authors but also extensive help from the Langley Technical Editing Section, the Langley Library (where most of the cited references were checked), and the NASA Headquarters Technical Publications Branch.
