Calculation of nuclear magnetic form factors [Slides]

The knowledge of how electron and neutrinos interact in nuclei is critical to an understanding of finite nucle and of astrophysical environments like neutron stars and supernovae. Within this project we are studying nuclear magnetic form factors that reflect how electrons interact with nuclei at low momenta. We implemented realistic treatments of many-nucleon correlations and currents to enable high-precision studies of electron physics.

Quality and Loss Factor Analysis of YBCO Superconducting Transmission Lines for Axion Dark Matter Detection

Axion haloscope experiments aim to detect the conversion of axions into microwave photons in a magnetic field, which produces extremely small signals requiring low-loss cryogenic transmission lines for readout to reduce noise and attenuation. Yttrium Barium Copper Oxide (YBCO) cables are a promising candidate. Unlike commonly used low-loss superconducting cables such as Niobium (Nb) and Niobium Titanium (NbTi), which have low critical fields, YBCO is a high-temperature superconductor that can remain stable in strong magnetic fields. We evaluate their suitability by characterizing the quality and loss factors of five stripline resonators (three YBCO, and copper and silver references) from the Brookhaven Technology Group at 77 K without an external field, and cooled to 30 mK in a 14 T magnet. For measurements at 77 K we recorded scattering parameter data and employed Lorentzian and circle-fitting analysis techniques. We identified the best-performing resonator and developed a cryogenic probe for future testing in the magnet at millikelvin temperatures.

Form factors for semi-leptonic $B_{(s)} \to D_{(s)}^∗\ell \nu_\ell$ decays

Semileptonic $B_{(s)}$ decays are of great phenomenological interestbecause they allow to extract CKM matrix elements or test lepton flavouruniversality. Taking advantage of existing data, we explore extractingform factors for vector final states using the narrow widthapproximation. Based on RBC/UKQCD's set of 2+1 flavour gauge fieldensembles with Shamir domain-wall fermion and Iwasaki gauge fieldaction, we study semileptonic $B_{(s)}$ decays using domain-wallfermions for light, strange and charm quarks, whereas bottom quarks aresimulated with the relativistic heavy quark (RHQ) action. Exploratoryresults for $B_s \to D_s^* \ell \nu_\ell$ are presented.

Learning the factors controlling mineral dissolution in three-dimensional fracture networks: applications in geologic carbon sequestration

We perform a set of high-fidelity simulations of geochemical reactions within three-dimensional discrete fracture networks (DFN) and use various machine learning techniques to determine the primary factors controlling mineral dissolution. The DFN are partially filled with quartz that gradually dissolves until quasi-steady state conditions are reached. At this point, we measure the quartz remaining in each fracture within the domain as our primary quantity of interest. We observe that a primary sub-network of fractures exists, where the quartz has been fully dissolved out. This reduction in resistance to flow leads to increased flow channelization and reduced solute travel times. However, depending on the DFN topology and the rate of dissolution, we observe substantial variability in the volume of quartz remaining within fractures outside of the primary subnetwork. This variability indicates an interplay between the fracture network structure and geochemical reactions. We characterize the features controlling these processes by developing a machine learning framework to extract their relevant impact. Specifically, we use a combination of high-fidelity simulations with a graph-based approach to study geochemical reactive transport in a complex fracture network to determine the key features that control dissolution. We consider topological, geometric and hydrological features of the fracture network to predict the remaining quartz in quasi-steady state. We found that the dissolution reaction rate constant of quartz and the distance to the primary sub-network in the fracture network are the two most important features controlling the amount of quartz remaining. This study is a first step towards characterizing the parameters that control carbon mineralization using an approach with integrates computational physics and machine learning.

Factors affecting the production of sugarcane yield and sucrose accumulation: suggested potential biological solutions

Environmental stresses are the main constraints on agricultural productivity and food security worldwide. This issue is worsened by abrupt and severe changes in global climate. The formation of sugarcane yield and the accumulation of sucrose are significantly influenced by biotic and abiotic stresses. Understanding the biochemical, physiological, and environmental phenomena associated with these stresses is essential to increase crop production. This review explores the effect of environmental factors on sucrose content and sugarcane yield and highlights the negative effects of insufficient water supply, temperature fluctuations, insect pests, and diseases. This article also explains the mechanism of reactive oxygen species (ROS), the role of different metabolites under environmental stresses, and highlights the function of environmental stress-related resistance genes in sugarcane. This review further discusses sugarcane crop improvement approaches, with a focus on endophytic mechanism and consortium endophyte application in sugarcane plants. Endophytes are vital in plant defense; they produce bioactive molecules that act as biocontrol agents to enhance plant immune systems and modify environmental responses through interaction with plants. This review provides an overview of internal mechanisms to enhance sugarcane plant growth and environmental resistance and offers new ideas for improving sugarcane plant fitness and crop productivity.

Total Power Factor Smart Contract with Cyber Grid Guard Using Distributed Ledger Technology for Electrical Utility Grid with Customer-Owned Wind Farm

In modern electrical grids, the numbers of customer-owned distributed energy resources (DERs) have increased, and consequently, so have the numbers of points of common coupling (PCC) between the electrical grid and customer-owned DERs. The disruptive operation of and out-of-tolerance outputs from DERs, especially owned DERs, present a risk to power system operations. A common protective measure is to use relays located at the PCC to isolate poorly behaving or out-of-tolerance DERs from the grid. Ensuring the integrity of the data from these relays at the PCC is vital, and blockchain technology could enhance the security of modern electrical grids by providing an accurate means to translate operational constraints into actions/commands for relays. This study demonstrates an advanced power system application solution using distributed ledger technology (DLT) with smart contracts to manage the relay operation at the PCC. The smart contract defines the allowable total power factor (TPF) of the DER output, and the terms of the smart contract are implemented using DLT with a Cyber Grid Guard (CGG) system for a customer-owned DER (wind farm). This article presents flowcharts for the TPF smart contract implemented by the CGG using DLT. The test scenarios were implemented using a real-time simulator containing a CGG system and relay in-the-loop. The data collected from the CGG system were used to execute the TPF smart contract. The desired TPF limits on the grid-side were between +0.9 and +1.0, and the operation of the breakers in the electrical grid and DER sides was controlled by the relay consistent with the provisions of the smart contract. The events from the real-time simulator, CGG, and relay showed a successful implementation of the TPF smart contract with CGG using DLT, proving the efficacy of this approach in general for implementing electrical grid applications for utilities with connections to customer-owned DERs.
