A duality in string theory on AdS 3

We consider bosonic string theory on AdS 3 supported by Kalb-Ramond flux. It is well known that the α' exact worldsheet theory is described by the SL(2,R) WZW model. In this note we perform checks of an α' exact dual description proposed in [arXiv:2104.07233] involving a winding condensate on a free theory background. We give the explicit map of vertex operators for normalizable states on both sides of the duality and demonstrate the equivalence of their two and three point functions by direct computation. The duality is of strong-weak nature in α' .

Search in diphoton and dielectron final states for displaced production of Higgs or Z bosons with the ATLAS detector in s = 13 TeV p p collisions

A search is presented for displaced production of Higgs bosons or Z bosons, originating from the decay of a neutral long-lived particle (LLP) and reconstructed in the decay modes H → γ γ and Z → ee . The analysis uses the full Run 2 dataset of proton-proton collisions delivered by the LHC at an energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV between 2015 and 2018 and recorded by the ATLAS detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb -1 . Exploiting the capabilities of the ATLAS liquid argon calorimeter to precisely measure the arrival times and trajectories of electromagnetic objects, the analysis searches for the signature of pairs of photons or electrons which arise from a common displaced vertex and which arrive after some delay at the calorimeter. The results are interpreted in a gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking model with pair-produced Higgsinos that decay to LLPs, and each LLP subsequently decays into either a Higgs boson or a Z boson. The final state includes at least two particles that escape direct detection, giving rise to missing transverse momentum. No significant excess is observed above the background expectation. The results are used to set upper limits on the cross section for Higgsino pair production, up to a $\bar{χ}^0_1$ mass of 369 (704) GeV for decays with 100% branching ratio of $\bar{χ}^0_1$ to Higgs (Z) bosons for a $\bar{χ}^0_1$ lifetime of 2 ns. A model-independent limit is also set on the production of pairs of photons or electrons with a significant delay in arrival at the calorimeter.

Conserved currents in five-dimensional proposals for lattice chiral gauge theories

We apply the Grabowska-Kaplan framework, originally proposed for lattice chiral gauge theories, to QCD. We show that the resulting theory contains a conserved and gauge invariant singlet axial current, both on the lattice and in the continuum limit. This must give rise to a difference with QCD, with the simplest possibility being a superfluous Nambu-Goldstone boson in the physical spectrum not present in QCD. We find a similar unwanted conserved current in the recent “disk” formalism, this time limiting ourselves to the continuum formulation. A similar problem is expected when either of these formalisms is used for its original goal of constructing lattice chiral gauge theories. Finally we discuss a conjecture about the possible dynamics that might be associated with the unwanted conserved current and the fate of ‘t Hooft vertices. Partial fillings of the bosonic $E$ 8 quantum Hall state

Here, we study bosonic topological phases constructed from electrons. In addition to a bulk excitation energy gap, these bosonic phases also have a fermion energy gap, below which all local excitations in the bulk and on the edge are even combinations of electrons. We focus on chiral phases, in which all low-energy edge excitations move in the same direction, that arise from the short-range entangled $E_8$ quantum Hall state, the bosonic analog of the filled lowest Landau level of electrons. The $E_8$ edge-state theory features an $E_8$ Kac-Moody symmetry that can be decomposed into ${\cal G}_A \times {\cal G}_B$ subalgebras, such as $SU(3) \times E_6$, $SO(M) \times SO(16-M)$, and $G_2 \times F_4$. (Here, $\{SO(M) \}$, $\{SU(N)\}$, and $\{E_8, G_2, F_4 \}$ denote orthogonal, unitary, and exceptional Lie algebras.) Using these symmetry decompositions, we construct exactly solvable coupled-wire model Hamiltonians for families of long-range entangled ${\cal G}_A$ or ${\cal G}_B$ bosonic fractional quantum Hall states that "partially fill" the $E_8$ state and are pairwise related by a generalized particle-hole symmetry. These long-range entangled states feature either Abelian or non-Abelian topological order. Some support the emergence of non-local Dirac and Majorana fermions, Ising anyons, metaplectic anyons, Fibonacci anyons, as well as deconfined $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge fluxes and charges.

Bootstrapping gauge theories

We consider asymptotically free gauge theories with gauge group S U ( N c ) and N f quarks with mass m q ≪ Λ QCD that undergo chiral symmetry breaking and confinement. We propose a bootstrap method to compute the S matrix of the pseudo-Goldstone bosons (pions) that dominate the low-energy physics. For the important case of N c = 3 , N f = 2 , a numerical implementation of the method gives the phase shifts of the S 0 , P 1 and S 2 waves in good agreement with experimental results. The method incorporates gauge theory information ( N c , N f , m q , Λ QCD ) by using the form-factor bootstrap recently proposed by Karateev, Kuhn and Penedones together with a finite energy version of the Shifman-Vainshtein-Zakharov (SVZ) sum rules. At low energy we impose constraints from chiral symmetry breaking. The only low-energy numerical inputs are the pion mass m π and the quark and gluon condensates. Scalar-scaffolded gluons and the combinatorial origins of Yang-Mills theory

We present a new formulation for Yang-Mills scattering amplitudes in any number of dimensions and at any loop order, based on the same combinatorial and binary-geometric ideas in kinematic space recently used to give an all-order description of Tr Φ 3 theory. We propose that in a precise sense the amplitudes for a suitably “stringy” form of these two theories are identical, up to a simple shift of kinematic variables. This connection is made possible by describing the amplitudes for n gluons via a “scalar scaffolding”, arising from the scattering of 2n colored scalars coming in n distinct pairs of flavors fusing to produce the gluons. Fundamental properties of the “u-variables”, describing the “binary geometry” for surfaces appearing in the topological expansion, magically guarantee that the kinematically shifted Tr Φ 3 amplitudes satisfy the physical properties needed to be interpreted as scaffolded gluons. These include multilinearity, gauge invariance, and factorization on tree- and loop-level gluon cuts. Our “stringy” scaffolded gluon amplitudes coincide with amplitudes in the bosonic string for extra-dimensional gluon polarizations at tree-level, but differ (and are simpler) at loop-level. We provide many checks on our proposal, including matching non-trivial leading singularities through two loops. The simple counting problem underlying the u variables autonomously “knows” about everything needed to convert colored scalar to gluon amplitudes, exposing a striking “discovery” of Yang-Mills amplitudes from elementary combinatorial ideas in kinematic space.

Robust and ultrafast state preparation by ramping artificial gauge potentials

Abstract The implementation of static artificial magnetic fields in ultracold atomic systems has become a powerful tool, e.g. for simulating quantum-Hall physics with charge-neutral atoms. Taking an interacting bosonic flux ladder as a minimal model, we investigate protocols for adiabatic state preparation via magnetic flux ramps. Considering the fact that it is actually the artificial vector potential (in the form of Peierls phases) that can be experimentally engineered in optical lattices, rather than the magnetic field, we find that the time required for adiabatic state preparation dramatically depends on which pattern of Peierls phases is used. This can be understood intuitively by noting that different patterns of time-dependent Peierls phases that all give rise to the same magnetic field ramp, generally lead to different artificial electric fields during the ramp. As an intriguing result, we find that an optimal choice allows for preparing the ground state almost instantaneously in the non-interacting system, which can be related to the concept of counterdiabatic driving. Remarkably, we find extremely short preparation times also in the strongly-interacting regime. Our findings open new possibilities for robust state preparation in atomic quantum simulators.

Chiral soft algebras for $\mathcal{N}$ = $2$ gauge theory

Some time ago, Seiberg and Witten solved for moduli spaces of vacua parameterized by scalar vacuum expectation values in $\mathcal{N}$ = $2$ gauge theories. More recently, new vacua associated to soft theorems and asymptotic symmetries have been found. Furthermore, this paper takes some first steps towards a complete picture of the infrared geometry of $\mathcal{N}$ = $2$ gauge theory incorporating both of these infrared structures.

Loop equation and exact soft anomalous dimension in $ \mathcal{N} $ = 4 super Yang-Mills

BPS Wilson loops in supersymmetric gauge theories have been the subjects of active research since they are often amenable to exact computation. So far most of the studies have focused on loops that do not intersect. In this paper, we derive exact results for intersecting 1/8 BPS Wilson loops in $ \mathcal{N} $ = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, using a combination of supersymmetric localization and the loop equation in 2d gauge theory. The result is given by a novel matrix-model-like representation which couples multiple contour integrals and a Gaussian matrix model. We evaluate the integral at large N, and make contact with the string worldsheet description at strong coupling. As an application of our results, we compute exactly a small-angle limit (and more generally near-BPS limits) of the cross anomalous dimension which governs the UV divergence of intersecting Wilson lines. The same quantity describes the soft anomalous dimension of scattering amplitudes of W-bosons in the Coulomb branch.

Revisiting supernova constraints on a light CP-even scalar

A light CP-even Standard Model (SM) gauge-singlet scalar S can be produced abundantly in the supernova core, via the nucleon bremsstrahlung process NN → NNS, due to its mixing with the SM Higgs boson. Including the effective S coupling to both nucleons and the pion mediators, we evaluate the production amplitude for the S particle and point out a key difference with the well-known light CP-odd scalar (axion) and vector boson (dark photon) cases. Taking the subsequent decay and re-absorption of S into account, we present a complete calculation of the energy loss rate for the S particle. We then use the SN1987A luminosity constraints to derive updated supernova limits on the mixing of the scalar S with the SM Higgs boson. We find that the mixing angle sin θ with the SM Higgs is excluded only in the narrow range of 3.9 × 10 -7 to 7.0 × 10 -6 , depending on the scalar mass up to about 147 MeV, beyond which the supernova limit disappears.

Cosmological dynamics of string theory axion strings

The quantum chromodynamics (QCD) axion may solve the strong CP problem and explain the dark matter (DM) abundance of our Universe. The axion was originally proposed to arise as the pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson of global U⁢(1) PQ Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry breaking, but axions also arise generically in string theory as zero modes of higher-dimensional gauge fields. In this work we show that string theory axions behave fundamentally differently from field theory axions in the early Universe. Field theory axions may form axion strings if the PQ phase transition takes place after inflation. In contrast, we show that string theory axions do not generically form axion strings. In special inflationary paradigms, such as D-brane inflation, string theory axion strings may form; however, their tension is parametrically larger than that of field theory axion strings. We then show that such QCD axion strings overproduce the DM abundance for all allowed QCD axion masses and are thus ruled out, except in scenarios with large warping. A loop-hole to this conclusion arises in the axiverse, where an axion string could be composed of multiple different axion mass eigenstates; a heavier eigenstate could collapse the network earlier, allowing for the QCD axion to produce the correct DM abundance and also generating observable gravitational wave signals.

Spinning no-scale $${\mathcal {F}}$$-SU(5) in the right direction

Abstract The Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL) recently announced confirmation of the Brookhaven National Lab (BNL) measurements of the $$g-2$$ g - 2 of the muon that uncovered a discrepancy with the theoretically calculated Standard Model value. We suggest an explanation for the combined BNL+FNAL 4.2 $$\sigma $$ σ deviation within the supersymmetric grand unification theory (GUT) model No-Scale $${\mathcal {F}}$$ F - $$SU(5)$$ S U ( 5 ) supplemented with a string derived TeV-scale extra $$10+\overline{10}$$ 10 + 10 ¯ vector-like multiplet and charged vector-like singlet $$(XE,XE^c)$$ ( X E , X E c ) , dubbed flippons. We introduced these vector-like particles into No-Scale Flipped SU (5) many years ago, and as a result, the renormalization group equation (RGE) running was immediately shaped to produce a distinctive and rather beneficial two-stage gauge coupling unification process to avoid the Landau pole and lift unification to the string scale, in addition to contributing through 1-loop to the light Higgs boson mass. The flippons have long stood ready to tackle another challenge, and now do so yet again, where the charged vector-like “lepton”/singlet couples with the muon, the supersymmetric down-type Higgs $$H_d$$ H d , and a singlet S , using a chirality flip to easily accommodate the muonic $$g-2$$ g - 2 discrepancy in No-Scale $${\mathcal {F}}$$ F - $$SU(5)$$ S U ( 5 ) . Considering the phenomenological success of this string derived model over the prior 11 years that remains accommodative of all presently available LHC limits plus all other experimental constraints, including no fine-tuning, and the fact that for the first time a Starobinsky-like inflationary model consistent with all cosmological data was derived from superstring theory in No-Scale Flipped SU (5), we believe it is imperative to reconcile the BNL+FNAL developments within the model space.

Natural inflation with pseudo Nambu-Goldstone bosons

It is shown that a pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson of given potential can naturally give rise to an epoch of inflation in the early universe. Mass scales which arise in particle physics models with a gauge group that becomes strongly interacting at a certain scales are shown to be conditions for successful inflation. The density fluctuation spectrum is nonscale-invariant, with extra power on large length scales.

High-quality composite Pati-Salam axion

We present a composite QCD axion model where the Peccei-Quinn symmetry emerges as a high-quality, accidental symmetry. The axion potential is only modified by eight-fermion, dimension-12 operators, which if present at the Planck scale, allow for axion dark matter from misalignment while solving the strong 𝐶⁢𝑃 problem. The model is an SU⁡(𝑁 𝑐 ) gauge theory with ten flavors where the Pati-Salam unified subgroup SO⁡(6) × SO⁡(4) ⊂ SU⁢(10)𝐿 and Sp⁡(10) ⊂ SU⁢(10) 𝑅 are weakly gauged. The dynamics breaks SU⁢(10) 𝐿 × SU⁢(10) 𝑅 → SU⁢(10) 𝑉 and the weakly gauged groups to U⁡(3) × U⁡(2) ⊃ SU⁢(3) 𝑐 × SU⁢(2) 𝐿 × U⁡(1) 𝑌 , with the QCD axion identified as one of the Nambu-Goldstone bosons. This axion has a relatively large coupling to photons while a residual $\bar{𝜃}$ eff may be just below the current limit on the neutron electric dipole moment. If the dimension-12 operators are present near the grand unified theory scale, they can cause domain wall networks to decay, allowing for axion dark matter even for the postinflationary scenario.

Infrared fixed point of the SU(3) gauge theory with 𝑁 𝑓 = 10 flavors

We use lattice simulations and the continuous renormalization group method, based on the gradient flow, to calculate the 𝛽 function and anomalous dimensions of the SU(3) gauge theory with 𝑁 𝑓 = 10 flavors of fermions in the fundamental representation. We employ several improvements to extend the range of available renormalized couplings, including the addition of heavy Pauli-Villars bosons to reduce cutoff effects and the combination of a range of gradient flow transformations. While in the weak coupling regime our result is consistent with those of earlier studies, our techniques allow us to study the system at much stronger couplings than previously possible. We find that the renormalization group 𝛽 function develops a zero, corresponding to an infrared-stable fixed point, at gradient-flow coupling 𝑔 2 = 15.0⁢(5). We also determine the mass and tensor anomalous dimensions: At the fixed point we find 𝛾 𝑚 ≃0.6, suggesting that this system might be deep inside the conformal window.

Classification of (2 + 1) D invertible fermionic topological phases with symmetry

Here we provide a classification of invertible topological phases of interacting fermions with symmetry in two spatial dimensions for general fermionic symmetry groups G f and general values of the chiral central charge c - . Here G f is a central extension of a bosonic symmetry group G b by fermion parity, (-1) F , specified by a second cohomology class [ω 2 ]∈ $\mathscr{H}^2$(Gb,$\mathbb{Z}_2$). Our approach proceeds by gauging fermion parity and classifying the resulting G b symmetry-enriched topological orders while keeping track of certain additional data and constraints. We perform this analysis through two perspectives, using G-crossed braided tensor categories and Spin(2c - ) 1 Chern-Simons theory coupled to a background G gauge field. These results give a way to characterize and classify invertible fermionic topological phases in terms of a concrete set of data and consistency equations, which is more physically transparent and computationally simpler than the more abstract methods using cobordism theory and spectral sequences. Our results also generalize and provide a different approach to the recent classification of fermionic symmetry-protected topological phases by Wang and Gu, which have chiral central charge c - = 0. We show how the tenfold way classification of topological insulators and superconductors fits into our scheme, along with general nonperturbative constraints due to certain choices of c - and G f . Mathematically, our results also suggest an explicit general parametrization of deformation classes of (2 + 1)D invertible topological quantum field theories with G f symmetry.

Symmetry-enriched quantum spin liquids in (3 + 1)d

We use the intrinsic one-form and two-form global symmetries of (3+1)d bosonic field theories to classify quantum phases enriched by ordinary (0-form) global symmetry. Different symmetry-enriched phases correspond to different ways of coupling the theory to the background gauge field of the ordinary symmetry. The input of the classification is the higher-form symmetries and a permutation action of the 0-form symmetry on the lines and surfaces of the theory. From these data we classify the couplings to the background gauge field by the 0-form symmetry defects constructed from the higher-form symmetry defects. For trivial two-form symmetry the classification coincides with the classification for symmetry fractionalizations in (2 + 1)d. We also provide a systematic method to obtain the symmetry protected topological phases that can be absorbed by the coupling, and we give the relative ’t Hooft anomaly for different couplings. We discuss several examples including the gapless pure U(1) gauge theory and the gapped Abelian finite group gauge theory. As an application, we discover a tension with a conjectured duality in (3 + 1)d for SU(2) gauge theory with two adjoint Weyl fermions.
