Permanent Magnets for the CEBAF 24GeV Upgrade

An upgrade of the CEBAF facility to double its present energy of 12GeV has been proposed. To provide double the number of linac passes using the existing five stacked arc beamlines, some beamlines are replaced by fixed-field accelerator (FFA) arcs, allowing multiple energies to pass through the same magnets. A solution is presented in which two of the existing electromagnetic beamlines are replaced with permanent magnet non-scaling FFA arcs, as demonstrated at CBETA. The two-stage design reduces peak magnetic field and synchrotron radiation loss compared to using a single stage. FFAs do not pulse their magnets, making permanent magnets a promising and power-efficient technology option. However, the magnetic field requirements are still at the high end of accelerator permanent magnets produced thus far (1.6T peak on beam), while the magnets must also be combined-function, having a gradient with a dipole offset. Designs using a novel oval aperture and open midplane within an adapted Halbach magnet are presented.

Theoretical level energies, radiative lifetimes and transitions in W IX

The atomic states of the W IX (W{sup 8+}) tungsten ion lying below the W{sup 9+} ionisation threshold have been studied theoretically, employing the multiconfiguration Dirac–Hartree–Fock method with configuration interaction. The level electronic structures and their energies are presented. The electric dipole (E1), magnetic dipole (M1), electric quadrupole (E2), and magnetic quadrupole (M2) radiative transitions have been computed in order to calculate the radiative lifetimes of given states. Transition wavelengths, energies, and decay rates are also presented for selected high-intensity E1 transitions. The configuration interaction method was applied to estimate electron correlation effects. The aim of the present research was to fill a lack of atomic data for low-charged tungsten ions, which may be useful in low-temperature plasma diagnostics and may form the base for collisional–radiative modelling of spectra for low-charged tungsten ions.

Complex Oxides under Simulated Electric Field: Determinants of Defect Polarization in AB O 3 Perovskites

Abstract Polarization of ionic and electronic defects in response to high electric fields plays an essential role in determining properties of materials in applications such as memristive devices. However, isolating the polarization response of individual defects has been challenging for both models and measurements. Here the authors quantify the nonlinear dielectric response of neutral oxygen vacancies, comprised of strongly localized electrons at an oxygen vacancy site, in perovskite oxides of the form AB O 3 . Their approach implements a computationally efficient local Hubbard U correction in density functional theory simulations. These calculations indicate that the electric dipole moment of this defect is correlated positively with the lattice volume, which they varied by elastic strain and by A‐site cation species. In addition, the dipole of the neutral oxygen vacancy under electric field increases with increasing reducibility of the B‐site cation. The predicted relationship among point defect polarization, mechanical strain, and transition metal chemistry provides insights for the properties of memristive materials and devices under high electric fields.

Role of dipole-forbidden autoionizing resonances in nonresonant one-color two-photon single ionization of N 2

We present an experimental and theoretical energy- and angle-resolved study on the photoionization dynamics of non-resonant one-color two-photon single valence ionization of neutral N$_2$ molecules. Using 9.3 eV photons produced via high harmonic generation and a 3-D momentum imaging spectrometer, we detect the photoelectrons and ions produced from one-color two-photon ionization in coincidence. Photoionization of N$_2$ populates the X $^2\Sigma^+_g$, A $^2\Pi_u$, and B $^2\Sigma^+_u$ ionic states of N$_2^+$, where the photoelectron angular distributions associated with the X $^2\Sigma^+_g$ and A $^2\Pi_u$ states both vary with changes in photoelectron kinetic energy of only a few hundred meV. We attribute the rapid evolution in the photoelectron angular distributions to the excitation and decay of dipole-forbidden autoionizing resonances that belong to series of different symmetries, all of which are members of the Hopfield series, and compete with the direct two-photon single ionization.

Microstructure, Texture, and Strength Development during High-Pressure Torsion of CrMnFeCoNi High-Entropy Alloy

The equiatomic face-centered cubic high-entropy alloy CrMnFeCoNi was severely deformed at room and liquid nitrogen temperature by high-pressure torsion up to shear strains of about 170. Its microstructure was analyzed by X-ray line profile analysis and transmission electron microscopy and its texture by X-ray microdiffraction. Microhardness measurements, after severe plastic deformation, were done at room temperature. It is shown that at a shear strain of about 20, a steady state grain size of 24 nm, and a dislocation density of the order of 1016 m−2 is reached. The dislocations are mainly screw-type with low dipole character. Mechanical twinning at room temperature is replaced by a martensitic phase transformation at 77 K. The texture developed at room temperature is typical for sheared face-centered cubic nanocrystalline metals, but it is extremely weak and becomes almost random after high-pressure torsion at 77 K. The strength of the nanocrystalline material produced by high-pressure torsion at 77 K is lower than that produced at room temperature. The results are discussed in terms of different mechanisms of deformation, including dislocation generation and propagation, twinning, grain boundary sliding, and phase transformation.

Band Edge Control of Quasi–2D Metal Halide Perovskites for Blue Light–Emitting Diodes with Enhanced Performance

Perovskite light–emitting diodes (PeLEDs) have received great attention for their potential as next–generation display technology. While remarkable progress has been achieved in green, red, and near–infrared PeLEDs with external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) exceeding 20%, obtaining high performance blue PeLEDs remains a challenge. Poor charge balance due to large charge injection barriers in blue PeLEDs has been identified as one of the major roadblocks to achieve high efficiency. Here band edge control of perovskite emitting layers for blue PeLEDs with enhanced charge balance and device performance is reported. By using organic spacer cations with different dipole moments, that is, phenethyl ammonium (PEA), methoxy phenethyl ammonium (MePEA), and 4–fluoro phenethyl ammonium (4FPEA), the band edges of quasi–2D perovskites are tuned without affecting their band gaps. Furthermore, detailed characterization and computational studies have confirmed the effect of dipole moment modification to be mostly electrostatic, resulting in changes in the ionization energies of ≈0.45 eV for MePEA and ≈ –0.65 eV for 4FPEA based thin films relative to PEA–based thin films. With improved charge balance, blue PeLEDs based on MePEA quasi–2D perovskites show twofold increase of the EQE as compared to the control PEA based devices.

Spatially varying colloidal phase behavior on multi-dimensional energy landscapes

A method is reported to determine equilibrium concentration profiles and local phase behavior for colloids on multi-dimensional energy landscapes. A general expression is derived based on local particle concentration and osmotic pressure differences that are balanced by forces on colloids due to energy landscape gradients. This analysis is applied to colloidal particles in high frequency AC electric fields within octupolar electrodes, where the energy landscape can be shaped in two dimensions. These results are also directly applicable to any particles having induced dipoles in spatially non-uniform electromagnetic fields. Predictions based on modelling colloids with an effective hard disk equation of state indicate inhomogeneous solid and fluid states coexisting on different shaped energy landscapes including multiple minima. Model predictions show excellent agreement with time-averaged Brownian Dynamic simulations at equilibrium. Findings demonstrate a general approach to understand colloidal phase behavior on energy landscapes due to external fields, which could enable control of colloidal microstructure on morphing energy landscapes and the inverse design of fields to assemble hierarchically structured colloidal materials.

Quantum efficiency enhancement in simulated nanostructured negative electron affinity GaAs photocathodes

We report nanostructured negative electron affinity GaAs photocathodes for a polarized electron source are studied using finite difference time domain optical simulation. The structures studied are nanosquare columns, truncated nanocones, and truncated nanopyramids. Mie-type resonances in the 700–800 nm waveband, suitable for generation of polarized electrons, are identified. At resonance wavelengths, the nanostructures can absorb up to 99% of the incident light. For nanosquare columns and truncated nanocones, the maximum quantum efficiency (QE) at 780 nm obtained from simulation is 27%, whereas for simulated nanopyramids, the QE is ~21%. The high photocathode quantum efficiency is due to the shift of Mie resonance toward the longer wavelength, leading to increased light absorption. The field profile distribution shows the excitation of dipole and quadrupole modes within the nanostructures at resonant frequencies. This leads to enhanced photoabsorption and photoelectron generation closer to emission surfaces than for a flat photocathode. The enhanced photoabsorption and reduced electron transport distance for the nanostructured photocathode enhance its QE compared to that for the flat surface wafer.

20 T Dipole Magnet Based on Hybrid HTS/LTS Cos-Theta Coils with Stress Management

This paper presents the design concept of the dipole magnet with 50 mm aperture, 20 T nominal field and 13% margin based on a six-layer cos-theta (CT) hybrid coil design. Due to the high stresses and strains in the coil at high field, Stress Management (SM) elements are implemented in the CT coil geometry. The results of magnet magnetic analysis are presented and discussed. The key parameters of this design are compared with the parameters of similar magnets based on block-type and canted cos-theta coils.

An energy-modified quantum defect method for the analysis of Rydberg spectra: Application to 2-butyne

The high resolution Rydberg absorption spectrum of 2-butyne C 4 H 6 recorded previously at the SOLEIL synchrotron facility has been interpreted using multichannel quantum defect theory (MQDT). The calculations are based on the continuum scattering calculations of Xu et al., J. Chem. Phys. 136, 154303 (2012) and of Jacovella et al., J. Phys. Chem. A 119, 12339 (2015) pertaining to the dipole-allowed excited state symmetries in absorption from the ground state. In contrast to the traditional approach of calculating low-lying electronic states first and then attempting to extend the calculations to ever higher energy, here the analysis proceeds through the extension of these detailed calculations of the electronic continuum scattering down into the discrete region of the spectrum. The continuum reaction matrices and dipole transition moments are adapted to the discrete Rydberg region via the use of an energy-modified formulation of MQDT theory and associated energy dependences of the quantum defects. The analysis reproduces more than 40 Rydberg states from n ≈ 10 down to the 3 d and 4 s levels with an rms error of better than 20 cm −1 . Further, these belong to five Rydberg series with three different molecular symmetries. While the approach predicts many additional series, most of these are calculated and observed to carry only little oscillator strength. The analysis shows that the Rydberg spectrum is dominated by the excitation of an e″ symmetry electron of fδ and gπ type, in line with what previous studies of the above-threshold shape resonance of 2-butyne have shown. The present study is intended to serve as an example showing how first principles continuum calculations may be useful for the interpretation of highly bound discrete states in a range that poses problems for the standard ab initio techniques. The quantitative treatment of the dipole absorption cross sections is deferred to a future paper.

Assessment of Training Performance, Degradation and Robustness of Paraffin-Wax Impregnated Nb 3 Sn Demonstrator Under High Magnetic Field

In the context of high-energy physics, the use of Nb 3 Sn superconducting magnets as a cost-effective and reliable technology depends on improvements in the following areas: long development and manufacturing cycles, conductor degradation after thermal cycling, long training, as well as a demonstration in accelerator magnets with a beam aperture of the full potential of modern Nb 3 Sn conductors. In short, performance, robustness, and cost are the three issues to be addressed. The Magnet Development project (MagDev) of the Swiss Accelerator Research and Technology initiative (CHART) at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) aims to contribute to the solutions to each of these issues, re-thinking the manufacturing and design process. Here in our program, every innovation is to be validated by means of a panoply of fast-turnaround tools: from non-powered and powered samples and coils, tested under background field, to low-field subscale magnets and high field short prototypes. This work presents one element in this panoply of R&D vehicles: a stress-managed Nb 3 Sn coil called BigBOX, impregnated with paraffin wax, and tested, through a collaboration with the Magnet Development Program of the United States (US-MDP), in the background field of Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL)’s common coils dipole DCC17.

Electron Cloud Measurements in Fermilab Booster

Fermilab Booster synchrotron requires an intensity upgrade from 4.5x1012 to 6.5x1012 protons per pulse as a part of Fermilabs Proton Improvement Plan-II (PIP-II). One of the factors which may limit the high-intensity performance is the fast transverse instabilities caused by electron cloud effects. According to the experience in the Recycler, the electron cloud gradually builds up over multiple turns in the combined function magnets and can reach final intensities orders of magnitude greater than in a pure dipole. Since the Booster synchrotron also incorporates combined function magnets, it is essential to discover any existence of an electron cloud. And if it does, its effects on the PIP-II era Booster and its mitigating techniques. As the first step, the presence or absence of the electron cloud was investigated using the clearing bunch technique. This paper presents experimental details and observations of the bunch-by-bunch tune shifts of beams with various bunch train structures at low and high intensities and simulation results conducted using PyECLOUD.

High precision fundamental physics experiments using compact spin-transparent storage rings of low energy polarized electron beams

We present a new design of highly specialized small storage rings for low energy polarized electron beams. The new design is based on the transparent spin methodology that cancels the spin precession due to the magnetic dipole moment at any energy while allowing for spin precession induced by the fundamental physics of interest to accumulate. The buildup of the vertical component of beam polarization can be measured using standard Mott polarimetry that is optimal at low electron energy. These rings can be used to measure the permanent electric dipole moment of the electron, relevant to CP violation and matter-antimatter asymmetry in the universe, and to search for dark energy and ultra-light dark matter.

Low-energy probes of no-scale SU(5) super-GUTs

We explore the possible values of the μ → eγ branching ratio, BR(μ → eγ), and the electron dipole moment (eEDM), d e , in no-scale SU(5) super-GUT models with the boundary conditions that soft supersymmetry-breaking matter scalar masses vanish at some high input scale, M in , above the GUT scale, M GUT . We take into account the constraints from the cosmological cold dark matter density, Ω CDM h 2 , the Higgs mass, M h , and the experimental lower limit on the lifetime for p → K + ν¯, the dominant proton decay mode in these super-GUT models. Reconciling this limit with Ω CDM h 2 and M h requires the Higgs field responsible for the charge-2/3 quark masses to be twisted, and possibly also that responsible for the charge-1/3 and charged-lepton masses, with model-dependent soft supersymmetry-breaking masses. We consider six possible models for the super-GUT initial conditions, and two possible choices for quark flavor mixing, contrasting their predictions for proton decay with versions of the models in which mixing effects are neglected. We find that τ(p → K + ν¯) may be accessible to the upcoming Hyper-Kamiokande experiment, whereas all the models predict BR(μ → eγ) and d e below the current and prospective future experimental sensitivities or both flavor choices, when the dark matter density, Higgs mass and current proton decay constraints are taken into account. However, there are limited regions with one of the flavor choices in two of the models where μ → e conversion on a heavy nucleus may be observable in the future. Our results indicate that there is no supersymmetric flavor problem in the class of no-scale models we consider.

Polarized dipole scattering amplitudes meet the valence quark model

The recently revised small- x helicity evolution [], resumming the double-logarithmic factor, α s ln 2 ( 1 / x ) , allows for the study of helicity distributions of quarks and gluons at small Bjorken x , corresponding to high center-of-mass energy. In this work, we calculate the moderate- x initial conditions in the regime, α s ln 2 ( 1 / x ) ∼ 1 , for the small- x helicity evolution using a light-front valence quark model of the proton, which provides additional physical information about the target. The perturbative emission and absorption of a gluon by the valence quarks are also included. The results, given in Eqs. (35), provide a new set of initial conditions with a significantly reduced number of free parameters than conventional models []. Consequently, the predictive power of small- x helicity evolution is expected to improve once the initial conditions from this work are incorporated. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Signatures of Multiband Effects in High-Harmonic Generation in Monolayer MoS 2

High-harmonic generation (HHG) in solids has been touted as a way to probe ultrafast dynamics and crystal symmetries in condensed matter systems. Here, we investigate the polarization properties of high-order harmonics generated in monolayer MoS 2 , as a function of crystal orientation relative to the mid-infrared laser field polarization. At several different laser wavelengths we experimentally observe a prominent angular shift of the parallel-polarized odd harmonics for energies above approximately 3.5 eV, and our calculations indicate that this shift originates in subtle differences in the recombination dipole strengths involving multiple conduction bands. Further, this observation is material specific and is in addition to the angular dependence imposed by the dynamical symmetry properties of the crystal interacting with the laser field, and may pave the way for probing the vectorial character of multiband recombination dipoles.

pyEF: A Python Framework for QM and QM/MM Atom-Wise Electric Field Analysis

We introduce pyEF, a software package for computing molecular electric fields, electrostatic interaction energies, and electrostatic potentials from quantum mechanical (QM) atom-centered multipole expansions with atom-wise decomposable contributions. We demonstrate the computational efficiency and accuracy of this QM-derived electric field evaluation tool through several tests. To assess the influence of the underlying QM method and charge partitioning scheme on these electrostatic quantities, we analyze over 250 configurations of an acetone solute molecule in five solvents of variable polarity. We find that electric field calculations are highly sensitive to the choice of charge partitioning method. Even among real-space charge schemes, acetone Stark tuning rates differ by up to a factor of 2. Benchmarking computed solvent dipole moments against experimental bulk values, we conclude that the CM5, ADCH, and Hirshfeld-I charge schemes most reliably capture solvent electrostatics and therefore provide a more faithful foundation for computing electric fields. When constructed from these real-space charges, electric fields are nearly insensitive to basis set size and monotonically increase in magnitude with higher Fock exchange. We also demonstrate efficient convergence of QM electrostatics when more distant molecules are represented solely by MM point charges, reducing computational overhead. Leveraging these findings, we demonstrate the use of pyEF to deduce environmental effects on a transition metal complex from a Ga 4 L 6 12– nanocage and quantify the dominant role of organic linkers in orchestrating electrostatic preorganization.
