Some important considerations in the development of stress corrosion cracking test methods.

Discussion of some of the precaution needs the development of fracture-mechanics based test methods for studying stress corrosion cracking involves. Following a review of pertinent analytical fracture mechanics considerations and of basic test methods, the implications for test corrosion cracking studies of the time-to-failure determining kinetics of crack growth and life are examined. It is shown that the basic assumption of the linear-elastic fracture mechanics analyses must be clearly recognized and satisfied in experimentation and that the effects of incubation and nonsteady-state crack growth must also be properly taken into account in determining the crack growth kinetics, if valid data are to be obtained from fracture-mechanics based test methods.

Some important aspects in testing high-modulus fiber composite tubes in axial tension.

Tubular specimens were potted in metal grips to determine the feasibility of this gripping method in applying multiaxial loads. Strain gage rosettes were used to assess grip transitional strains, through thickness strain variation, and strain variations along the tube length and circumference. The investigation was limited to loading graphite/epoxy and glass/epoxy tubes in axial tension. Results include modifications made to the grips to reduce transitional strains, illustrations of the tube failure modes, and some material properties. The gripping concept shows promise as a satisfactory technique for applying multiaxial loads to high-strength, high-modulus fiber composite tubes.

The growing importance of costs and ways to maintain cost control on a large program in today's competitive environment

Discussion of management techniques that make it possible to overcome inflationary and developmental cost rises while holding schedule and performance fixed in scientific space programs. The techniques reviewed pertain to high personnel motivation, continual review of contract rigidity for de facto modification by senior judgment, standardization vs design innovation, cooperative customer/contractor goal orientation vs task orientation, and deep real-time management visibility.

Importance of helicopter dynamics to the mathematical model of the helicopter

A mathematical model of the helicopter requires appropriate representation of the constituent elements of rotor dynamics. General-purpose programs that model a variety of configurations for a broad range of operating conditions result in varying and incompatible levels of sophistication. Analysis of specific dynamic problems facilitates the identification of configuration parameters which determine system behavior. For the present analysis, the nonlinear equations of a torsionally rigid hingeless rotor are linearized about an equilibrium condition to determine flap-lag stability characteristics in hover. A collocation method was used to obtain the coupled natural frequencies and modes. These modes allow exact treatment of the effect of elastic coupling which more than compensates for the destabilizing inertial coupling. The sensitivity of damping to the number of modes was found to be small, and reasonable accuracy was obtained the first flapwise and edgewise coupled modes. The range of destabilizing precone was found to be small.

Is magnetic convection important in the sun

It is found that magnetic convection most probably operates inside the sun. The energy flux which it can carry is five to six orders of magnitude smaller than the total solar flux. The velocity with which magnetic flux rises from the interior of the sun towards the surface is measured. Under conditions where the entire stellar flux is carried by convection, the velocities of magnetic buoyancy are compared with the velocities of convective elements inside stars. Observation shows magnetic convection effects on the internal temperature structure of the sun to be small.

Convection phenomena at reduced gravity of importance for materials processing

The basic aspects of convection processes are delineated. It is shown that even in weak gravitational fields buoyancy can induce fluid motions. Furthermore, at reduced gravity other nongravity forces such as surface or interfacial tensions, g-jitter, therma-volume expansions, density differences due to phase changes, and magnetic and electric fields can induce fluid motions. The various types of flow possible with these various driving forces are described and criteria for determining the extent and nature of the resulting flows and heat transfer are presented. The various physical mechanisms that can occur separately and in combination are indicated and the present state of knowledge of each of the phenomena is outlined.

Application of differential similarity to finding nondimensional groups important in tests of cooled engine components

The method of differential similarity is applied to the partial differential equations and boundary conditions which govern the temperature, velocity, and pressure fields in the flowing gases and the solid stationary components in air-cooled engines. This procedure yields the nondimensional groups which must have the same value in both the test rig and the engine to produce similarity between the test results and the engine performance. These results guide the experimentalist in the design and selection of test equipment that properly scales quantities to actual engine conditions. They also provide a firm fundamental foundation for substantiation of previous similarity analyses which employed heuristic, physical reasoning arguments to arrive at the nondimensional groups.

Interpretation of broad-band polarimetry of solar coronal transients - Importance of H-alpha emission

An eruptive prominence and coronal transient was observed in H-alpha, He II 304-A, and coronal white light (3700-7000 A). This event was generically similar to many other coronal transients associated with eruptive prominences in that loops of material propagated outward through the corona. It differed in that some of the prominence material was observed above 1.75 solar radii in both coronal white light and He II. Polarization analysis of the white-light data shows that the observed radiance from the loop-like transient was entirely due to free electron or Thomson scattering, whereas the white-light radiance from the prominence material was dominated by H-alpha emission. By comparing the white-light observations with model calculations, the densities along the loop and limits on the temperature and density of the prominence are obtained. Material observed in both white light and He II is shown to be cool prominence material, whereas analysis indicates that the transient-loop material is hot and coronal in origin. The time sequence of observations leads to the hypothesis that the prominence material is heated as it is ejected from the sun.

Historical evidence of importance to the industrialization of flat-plate silicon photovoltaic systems. Volume 1: Executive summary

An analysis is given of the Low-Cost Silicon Solar Array Project plans for the industrialization of new production technologies expected to be forthcoming as a result of the project's technology development efforts. In particular, LSSA's mandate to insure an annual production capability of 500 MW peak for the photovoltaic supply industry by 1986 is critically examined. The examination focuses on one of the concerns behind this goal -- timely development of industrial capacity to supply anticipated demand. Some of the conclusions include: (1) construction of small-scale pilot plants should be undertaken only for purposes of technology development; (2) large-scale demonstrations should be undertaken only when the technology is well in hand; (3) commercial-scale production should be left to the private sector; (4) the 500-MW annual output goal should be shifted to Program Headquarters.

Historical Evidence of Importance to the Industrialization of Flat-plate Silicon Photovoltaic Systems, Volume 2

Problems which may arise as the low cost silicon solar array (LSSA) project attempts to industrialize the production technologies are defined. The charge to insure an annual production capability of 500 MW peak for the photovoltaic supply industry by 1986 was critically examined, and focused on one of the motivations behind this goal-concern over the timely development of industrial capacity to supply anticipated demand. Conclusions from the analysis are utilized in a discussion of LSSA's industrialization plans, particularly the plans for pilot, demonstration and commercial scale production plants. Specific recommendations for the implementation of an industrialization task and the disposition of the project quantity goal were derived.

The importance of determining the solar quadrupole moment

Current theoretical modelling of the sun is in difficulty. Additional observations must be made to place constraints on the plethora of conjectures that have been advanced to explain the low neutrino flux and to guide solar model builders in their search to understand the deep interior of the sun. A determination of the magnitude of the solar quadrupole moment, is one such constraint; it places limits on the density, angular velocity and magnetic field distributions inside the sun.
