Modal test - Measurement and analysis requirements

Data from the Viking Orbiter Modal Test Program are used to illustrate modal test measurement and analysis requirements. The test was performed using a multiple shake dwell technique where data were acquired one channel at a time and recorded on paper tape. Up to ten shakers were used simultaneously, with a complete set of data consisting of 290 strain-gage readings and 125 accelerometer readings. The data analysis provided information sufficient to minimize errors in the data. The list of analyses in order of value is orthogonality, residual mass, frequency sweep, data checks to assure good test data, multilevel trends, global kinetic energy, and global strain energy.

Modal analysis and dynamic stresses for acoustically excited Shuttle insulation tiles

The thermal protection system of the Space Shuttle consists of thousands of separate insulation tiles, of varying thicknesses, bonded to the orbiter's surface through a soft strain-isolation pad which is bonded, in turn, to the vehicle's stiffened metallic skin. A modal procedure for obtaining the acoustically induced RMS stress in these comparatively thick tiles is described. The modes employed are generated by a previously developed iterative procedure which converges rapidly for the combined system of tiles and primary structure considered. Each tile is idealized by several hundred three-dimensional finite elements and all tiles on a given panel interact dynamically. Acoustic response results from the present analyses are presented. Comparisons with other analytical results and measured modal data for a typical Shuttle panel, both with and without tiles, are made, and the agreement is good.

Modal seismic analysis of a nuclear power plant control panel and comparison with SAP 4

The application of NASTRAN to seismic analysis by considering the example of a nuclear power plant control panel was considered. A modal analysis of a three-dimensional model of the panel, consisting of beam and quadri-lateral membrane elements, is performed. Using the results of this analysis and a typical response spectrum of an earthquake, the seismic response of the structure is obtained. ALTERs required to the program in order to compute the maximum modal responses as well as the resultant response are given. The results are compared with those obtained by using the SAP IV computer program.

Stiffness coupling application to modal synthesis program, users guide

A FORTRAN IV computer program used to perform modal synthesis of structures by stiffness coupling, using the dynamic transformation method is described. The program was named SCAMP (Stiffness Coupling Approach Modal-Synthesis Program). The program begins with the entry of a substructure's physical mode shapes and eigenvalues or a substructure's mass and stiffness matrix. If the mass and stiffness matrices are entered, the eigen problem for the individual substructure is solved. Provisions are included for a maximum of 20 substructures which are coupled by stiffness matrix springs. Each substructure has a number degrees of freedom (DOF), except that for DOF greater than 100; vector sets having maximum row and column size of 100 were generated prior to entering SCAMP. The substructures are then coupled together via coupling springs, and the dynamic transformation is used to reduce the size of the eigen problem.

Modal Interpolation Program, L 215 (INTERP): Supplemental System Design and Maintenance Document - Volume 2

The design, structure, and usage of the modal interpolation program L215 are presented. The program uses modal data sets of arrays containing interpolation coefficients. The interpolation arrays are used to determine displacements at various aerodynamic control points. The displacements consist of translations normal to the aerodynamic surface and surface slopes that are parallel and perpendicular to the free stream direction. Five different interpolation methods are available.

Modal interpolation program, L215 (INTERP). Volume 1: Engineering and usage

The usage of the Modal Interpolation Program L215 (INTERP) is described. The program uses modal data to form sets of arrays containing interpolation coefficients. The interpolation arrays can then be used to determine displacements at various aerodynamic surface and surface slopes that are parallel and perpendicular to the freestream direction. Five different interpolation methods are available. A description of the data manipulation and the interpolation methods is presented.

Comparison of modal test methods on the Voyager payload

A comparison of the performance of modern modal data analysis methods on test data from the Voyager Jupiter/Saturn payload is presented. Four different test/data-analysis combinations are compared - multiple-point sine excitation tests, single-point random-excitation tests using two different techniques of manipulating Fourier transform data, and a time-domain method for analyzing random data. Results indicate that all four methods can give comparable results. Of the four, the time-domain approach detects more modes in the test data and, at the same time, shows the greatest promise for reducing the time and cost of modal testing.

ET LOX modal survey analysis and test assessment

The results are presented of the analysis and modal test of the liquid oxygen tank and intertank of the space shuttle external tank. The analytical models, test article, and support hardware are described. Frequency and damping are compared on a mode-by-mode basis. The data assessment clearly confirms the validity of the analytical model and establishes a high level of confidence that the methodology will accurately predict modal characteristics of flight configurations.

Dynamic modal estimation using instrumental variables

A method to determine the modes of dynamical systems is described. The inputs and outputs of a system are Fourier transformed and averaged to reduce the error level. An instrumental variable method that estimates modal parameters from multiple correlations between responses of single input, multiple output systems is applied to estimate aircraft, spacecraft, and off-shore platform modal parameters.

A study of the modal truncation error in the component mode analysis of a dual-rotor system

In the component mode synthesis method, the equation of motion in the generalized coordinates is built upon the undamped eigenvalue data of the component structures. Error is inevitable when truncated modes are used. In this paper, two modal truncation schemes were evaluated with regard to the critical speed, stability, and unbalance response of a two-spool gas turbine engine. The numbers of modes required to yield acceptable accuracy in these cases were determined. Guidelines for modal truncation were derived from these results.

Experimental modal analysis of the fuselage panels of an Aero Commander aircraft

The reduction of interior noise in light aircraft was investigated with emphasis the thin fuselage sidewall. The approach used is theoretical and involves modeling of the sidewall panels and stiffeners. Experimental data obtained from tests investigating the effects of mass and stiffness treatments to the sidewalls are presented. The dynamic characteristics of treated panels are contrasted with the untreated sidewall panels using experimental modal analysis techniques. The results include the natural frequencies, modal dampling, and mode shapes of selected panels. Frequency response functions, data relating to the global fuselage response, and acoustic response are also presented.

Application of modal control to wing-flutter suppression

A discrete modal control design approach that is applied to a single control surface, unswept aircraft wing subject to bending torsion flutter is described. The modal approach is a mathematical method to decouple the equations of motion into isolated differential equations. In this paper, a pole-placement approach is then applied to determine stability gains in the discrete plane using only the two complex-conjugate flutter-mode equations. A fixed gain Kalman filter is used to estimate the model amplitudes using three measurements. Results are presented for a full-state estimator (36 states) and two reduced state estimators using two different closed-loop pole locations. The control law is designed for a dynamic pressure that is 50 percent greater than the uncontrolled-flutter dynamic pressure. With constant control-law gains, the closed-loop system remains stable over the dynamic-pressure range from flutter onset to approximately an 80-percent increase in pressure.

Direct system parameter identification of mechanical structures with application to modal analysis

In this paper a method is described to estimate mechanical structure characteristics in terms of mass, stiffness and damping matrices using measured force input and response data. The estimated matrices can be used to calculate a consistent set of damped natural frequencies and damping values, mode shapes and modal scale factors for the structure. The proposed technique is attractive as an experimental modal analysis method since the estimation of the matrices does not require previous estimation of frequency responses and since the method can be used, without any additional complications, for multiple force input structure testing.

Order reduction for models of space structures using modal cost analysis

Modal cost analysis furnishes a promising methodology for developing dynamical models of space structures for use in control systems analysis. Economy and accuracy can be attained by only retaining vibration modes that contribute significantly to an appropriately defined cost function. Expressions for modal costs (especially simple for 'lightly damped' structures) are derived for attitude control, vibration suppression, and shape control. These techniques are illustrated through application to a high-order finite element model of a large platform-type structure.

Time-Domain Modal Vibration Identification

Ibrahim Time-Domain modal vibration identification program (ITD) uses multiple free-decay responses of test structure directly in time domain to identify modal parameters of structure: natural frequencies, damping factors and damped mode shapes. ITD written in FORTRAN.

Sound radiation from annular ducts/nozzles using modal decomposition of in-duct acoustic power

Using a refined acoustic impulse technique, an experimental program was carried out to determine the proper procedure for measuring the acoustic power for both incident and reflected sound fields for annular ducts with and without nozzles at various flow conditions. Several radial and azimuthal pressure measurements were made, and using these complex pressure data, the modal content of the pressure field was determined. A mathematical approach for the modal decomposition of annular duct acoustic power was developed. The acoustic power due to each individual mode and also their total sum were derived. The acoustic characteristics of annular duct-nozzle systems were studied at various flow conditions. The results derived from the experiments include the termination reflection coefficient, the normalized transmission coefficients, the power transfer functions and the power imbalance.

A NASTRAN DMAP procedure for calculation of base excitation modal participation factors

This paper presents a technique for calculating the modal participation factors for base excitation problems using a DMAP alter to the NASTRAN real eigenvalue analysis Rigid Format. The DMAP program automates the generation of the seismic mass to add to the degrees of freedom representing the shaker input directions and calculates the modal participation factors. These are shown in the paper to be a good measure of the maximum acceleration expected at any point on the structure when the subsequent frequency response analysis is run.

IMAGES: A digital computer program for interactive modal analysis and gain estimation for eigensystem synthesis

An interactive digital computer program for modal analysis and gain estimation for eigensystem synthesis was written. Both mathematical and operation considerations are described; however, the mathematical presentation is limited to those concepts essential to the operational capability of the program. The program is capable of both modal and spectral synthesis of multi-input control systems. It is user friendly, has scratchpad capability and dynamic memory, and can be used to design either state or output feedback systems.
