Alternative approaches to space-based power generation

Satellite Power Stations (SPS) would generate electrical power in space for terrestrial use. Their geosynchronous orbit location permits continuous microwave power transmission to ground receiving antenna farms. Eight approaches to the generation of the electrical power to be transmitted were investigated. Configurations implementing these approaches were developed through an optimization process intended to yield the lowest cost for each. A complete program was baselined for each approach, identifying required production rates, quantities of launches, required facilities, etc. Each program was costed, including the associated launches, orbital assembly, and maintenance operations. The required electric power charges to amortize these costs were calculated. They range from 26 to 82 mills/kWh (ground busbar).

Application of numerical optimization to the design of supercritical airfoils without drag-creep

Recent applications of numerical optimization to the design of advanced airfoils for transonic aircraft have shown that low-drag sections can be developed for a given design Mach number without an accompanying drag increase at lower Mach numbers. This is achieved by imposing a constraint on the drag coefficient at an off-design Mach number while the drag at the design Mach number is the objective function. Such a procedure doubles the computation time over that for single design-point problems, but the final result is worth the increased cost of computation. The ability to treat such multiple design-point problems by numerical optimization has been enhanced by the development of improved airfoil shape functions. Such functions permit a considerable increase in the range of profiles attainable during the optimization process.

Optimization of flexible wing structures subject to strength and induced drag constraints

An optimization procedure for designing wing structures subject to stress, strain, and drag constraints is presented. The optimization method utilizes an extended penalty function formulation for converting the constrained problem into a series of unconstrained ones. Newton's method is used to solve the unconstrained problems. An iterative analysis procedure is used to obtain the displacements of the wing structure including the effects of load redistribution due to the flexibility of the structure. The induced drag is calculated from the lift distribution. Approximate expressions for the constraints used during major portions of the optimization process enhance the efficiency of the procedure. A typical fighter wing is used to demonstrate the procedure. Aluminum and composite material designs are obtained. The tradeoff between weight savings and drag reduction is investigated.

15 cm mercury multipole thruster

A 15 cm multipole ion thruster was adapted for use with mercury propellant. During the optimization process three separable functions of magnetic fields within the discharge chamber were identified: (1) they define the region where the bulk of ionization takes place, (2) they influence the magnitudes and gradients in plasma properties in this region, and (3) they control impedance between the cathode and main discharge plasmas in hollow cathode thrusters. The mechanisms for these functions are discussed. Data from SERT II and cusped magnetic field thrusters are compared with those measured in the multipole thruster. The performance of this thruster is shown to be similar to that of the other two thrusters. Means of achieving further improvement in the performance of the multipole thruster are suggested.

Design and analysis of a stiffened composite fuselage panel

The design and analysis of stiffened composite panel that is representative of the fuselage structure of existing wide bodied aircraft is discussed. The panel is a minimum weight design, based on the current level of technology and realistic loads and criteria. Several different stiffener configurations were investigated in the optimization process. The final configuration is an all graphite/epoxy J-stiffened design in which the skin between adjacent stiffeners is permitted to buckle under design loads. Fail safe concepts typically employed in metallic fuselage structure have been incorporated in the design. A conservative approach has been used with regard to structural details such as skin/frame and stringer/frame attachments and other areas where sufficient design data was not available.

Structural sizing considerations for large space platforms

Structural optimization studies are made using mathematical programming techniques to examine minimum mass structural proportions of deployable and erectable tetrahedral truss platforms subject to the integrated effects of practical design requirements. Considerations integrated into the optimization process are: 1) lowest natural frequencies of the platform and individual platform components (struts); 2) packaging constraints imposed by the Shuttle cargo bay capacity; 3) initial curvature of the struts; 4) column buckling of the struts due to gravity gradient, orbital transfer, strut length tolerance, or design loads; and 5) practical lower limits for strut diameter and wall thickness. Ultra-low mass designs are shown to be possible with strut proportions much more slender than those conventionally used for earthbound application.

Active flutter suppression using optical output feedback digital controllers

A method for synthesizing digital active flutter suppression controllers using the concept of optimal output feedback is presented. A convergent algorithm is employed to determine constrained control law parameters that minimize an infinite time discrete quadratic performance index. Low order compensator dynamics are included in the control law and the compensator parameters are computed along with the output feedback gain as part of the optimization process. An input noise adjustment procedure is used to improve the stability margins of the digital active flutter controller. Sample rate variation, prefilter pole variation, control structure variation and gain scheduling are discussed. A digital control law which accommodates computation delay can stabilize the wing with reasonable rms performance and adequate stability margins.

ADS-1 - A new general-purpose optimization program

Today, numerous programs are available which may be coupled with finite element analysis or other analysis techniques to perform the optimization function in the solution of structural synthesis problems. However, most of these codes include only one or two algorithms and many have not been tested on problems of significant size and complexity. There is, therefore, a need for a reliable, general-purpose, publicly available code, containing a variety of modern algorithms for use in structural synthesis as well as general engineering design. The ADS-1 program (Automated Design Synthesis: Version 1) was written in response to this need. The present investigation has the objective to present the capabilities of the ADS program and to demonstrate its application to structural synthesis. The ADS program solves the general nonlinear constrained optimization problem in the standard form. At each level of the optimization process, several options are available.
