SMD Technology Highlights

Three technology highlights from the Science Mission Directorate (SMD) Astrophysics Division, Biological and Physical Sciences Division, and Planetary Science Division are featured: a) A new class of X-ray detector with unprecedented energy resolution and array size could help transform our understanding of the cosmos through unparalleled vision into the otherwise invisible universe. b) An autonomous microfluidic culturing system with CubeSat heritage is teaming up with two state-of-the-art radiation detectors to measure how biology responds to the radiation and reduced gravity environment on the lunar surface. c) Several core technologies developed via the Hot Operating Temperature Technology (HOTTech) Program were recently tested in the Glenn Extreme Environment Rig (GEER), which simulates the conditions on the surface of Venus.

Silicon surface barrier detectors used for liquid hydrogen density measurement

Multichannel system employing a radioisotope radiation source, strontium-90, radiation detector, and a silicon surface barrier detector, measures the local density of liquid hydrogen at various levels in a storage tank. The instrument contains electronic equipment for collecting the density information, and a data handling system for processing this information.

Surface Passivation of CdZnTe Detector by Hydrogen Peroxide Solution Etching

The spectral resolution of room temperature nuclear radiation detectors such as CdZnTe is usually limited by the presence of conducting surface species that increase the surface leakage current. Studies have shown that the leakage current can be reduced by proper surface preparation. In this study, we try to optimize the performance of CdZnTe detector by etching the detector with hydrogen peroxide solution as function of concentration and etching time. The passivation effect that hydrogen peroxide introduces have been investigated by current-voltage (I-V) measurement on both parallel strips and metal-semiconductor-metal configurations. The improvements on the spectral response of Fe-55 and 241Am due to hydrogen peroxide treatment are presented and discussed.

The measured radiation environment within Spacelabs 1 and 2 and comparison with predictions

A set of passive and active radiation detectors was flown as part of the verification flight instrumentation (VFI) in an attempt to measure the radiation environment in the Spacelab (SL) module and on the pallet. SL 1 carried 4 passive and 2 active detector packages which were used to evaluate the radiation environment within the spacecraft and SL 2 carried 2 passive VFI units on the pallet. Dose equivalents of 330 + or - 70 mrem and 537 + or - 37 mrem were measured in the SL 1 module and SL 2 pallet, respectively.

High-energy radiation detectors suitable for balloon-borne or space-based radiation event studies are described. The employment of NaI(Tl) scintillator bars for gamma ray detection is outlined, and the development of a fluorescent gated gas-filled scintillation proportional counter is reported. A high throughput nondispersive hard X ray spectrograph with angular resolution for cosmic bursts, transients, and sources has been constructed. Features of a sealed high pressure xenon filled imaging proportional counter with a 30 sq cm sensitive area are explored. Finally, the various radiation effects on electronic circuitry in a space environment are defined, and an MOS dosimeter for assaying the cumulative radiation flux in a spacecraft due to ambient conditions is characterized.

In situ measurement of atomic hydrogen in the upper mesosphere

In situ measurements of H abundance between 73 and 93 km are reported for conditions of winter solstice, magnetic quiet, and a solar depression angle of 12 deg. The data were obtained by a rocket-borne instrument using the resonance fluorescence technique. A discharge source emitting photons at 1216 A was an integral part of the instrument. The instrument was radially deployed 80 cm by a boom from the front of the payload in order to avoid the shock created by the gas flow over the front of the payload. An attitude control system oriented the payload so that the gas flow was nearly perpendicular to the plane containing the incident and scattered photons, thus minimizing any correction for Doppler shift. The resonance radiation detector viewed a black backstop in order to minimize background radiation from the hydrogen geocorona; however, the background was not entirely eliminated. The signal-to-noise ratio was improved by summing the data in 1.8-s bins. The observed hydrogen concentration maximized at 85 km at 1.5 + or - 1.1 x 10 to the 8th atoms/cu cm.

Unsteady radiant heating of conical foil receptors.

The time dependent thermal equations of two types of conical radiation detectors are discussed and solved for a step function application of radiation parallel to the axis of the cases. The first type has a heat sink at the base and the second has the vertex buried in a heat sink to a variable proportion of its total height. It is found that the first case has the lower sensitivity and better time response. The time response of the second case is improved by more deeply burying the vertex, but to the detriment of sensitivity. At no value of this inclusion can both a superior sensitivity and time response be achieved for the second case.

Fast, Large Area, Wide Band GAP UV Photodetector for Cherenkov Light Detection

A solid-state radiation detector includes a pattern of conductive metal on a zinc oxide substrate. The pattern provides an arrangement of interdigitated electrode fingers. The wide band gap substrate is sensitive to UV light, which can cause a conductivity change in the substrate. The electrode fingers are configured to sense a difference in substrate conductivity resulting from UV light. The detector has a fast response time, which enables it to detect Cherenkov light. The compact detector provides savings on size, weight, and required power. Thus, the solid-state detector can be used to replace photomultiplier tubes in Cherenkov detectors. The features of the novel detector allow for an improved system to detect and monitor UV radiation, especially during deep space missions.

Detector Calibration to Quantify Random Summing in HPGe Spectroscopy

While calibrating a High Purity Germanium (HPGe) Radiation Detector for Xenon-133 (133Xe) the process of random summing occurs which leads to excess counts in the 160.6keV peak from random summing of the 81keV photons at the 162keV energy. Multiple samples of 133Xe with varying levels of radioactivity were assayed to determine a relationship between the occurrence of random summing and the net area of the 160.6keV peak. When the calculated efficiencies in the 160.6keV peak were compared to the theoretical efficiency obtained from a multi-energy calibration at 160.6keV, the amount of random summing could be estimated as excess observed efficiency and correlated to the sample activity. While a trend is apparent in the data, the mechanisms that contribute to the trend are still being studied so the data can be accurately correlated.

Mixed Material Scintillator Systems (Quarterly Report FY20Q3)

This project aims to invent, model, and prototype mixed-material scintillator systems (MMSSs), a new class of radiation detectors that use heterogenous internal structures of different scintillating materials to detect additional properties of radiation. These internal structures can be produced using additive manufacture (3D printing) of scintillator, a currently emerging application of additive manufacture technology. MMSSs combine the low cost and complexity of conventional scintillation detectors with capabilities currently only available in more expensive and complex detectors. By identifying promising MMSS designs, this project will enable a new class of detectors to meet DNN’s mission needs for SNM detection.

Mitigating electrochemical degradation in CsPbBr{sub 3} gamma detectors by organic and inorganic encapsulation.

CsPbBr3 perovskite semiconductors have emerged as a leading candidate for nextgeneration radiation detectors because of their exceptional charge transport properties, defect tolerance, and record-breaking sensitivity and energy resolution. Their long-term stability, however, is hindered by electrode-driven electrochemical decomposition, which is accelerated by moisture- and oxygen-assisted ion migration during operation. Here, we investigated organic and inorganic encapsulation strategies as both environmental barriers and means to suppress interfacial degradation pathways. Atomic layer deposition (ALD) of Al2O3 provided a conformal passivation layer that blocked environmental ingress, suppressed ionic diffusion, reduced leakage current, enhanced energy resolution and expanded the operational electric-field window beyond 5 kV∙cm1 . By contrast, organic encapsulants such as paraffin wax and polystyrene slowed moisture diffusion but did not suppress interfacial reactions, with wax extending stability to over 90 days. These results show that ALD-Al2O3 suppresses dominant interfacial degradation pathways, enabling stable, high-field operation and advancing the practical deployment of CsPbBr3 γ-ray detectors.

The generation of transition radiation by relativistic particles in plastic foam radiators

The design of large area transition radiation detectors for highly relativistic particles can be greatly simplified if plastic foam radiators are employed. Using electron beams with energies 1-9 GeV at the Cornell synchrotron, we have studied the properties of a large variety of transition radiators consisting of commercially available foam materials. In most cases, a measurable transition radiation signal has been observed, but only a few materials have been found to be suitable for practical purposes. The observed radiation yield is in these cases very similar to that of equivalent multifoil radiators. A detailed discussion is given of the particle detection efficiency that can be obtained with high yield foam radiators.

Cosmic Ray Nuclei (CRN) detector investigation

The Cosmic Ray Nuclei (CRN) detector was designed to measure elemental composition and energy spectra of cosmic radiation nuclei ranging from lithium to iron. CRN was flown as part of Spacelab 2 in 1985, and consisted of three basic components: a gas Cerenkov counter, a transition radiation detector, and plastic scintillators. The results of the experiment indicate that the relative abundance of elements in this range, traveling at near relativistic velocities, is similar to those reported at lower energy.

Quaternary Semiconductor Cd1−xZnxTe1−ySey for High-Resolution, Room-Temperature Gamma-Ray Detection

The application of Cd0.9Zn0.1Te (CZT) single crystals, the primary choice for high-resolution, room-temperature compact gamma-ray detectors in the field of medical imaging and homeland security for the past three decades, is limited by the high cost of production and maintenance due to low detector grade crystal growth yield. The recent advent of its quaternary successor, Cd0.9Zn0.1Te1−ySey (CZTS), has exhibited remarkable crystal growth yield above 90% compared to that of ~33% for CZT. The inclusion of Se in appropriate stoichiometry in the CZT matrix is responsible for reducing the concentration of sub-grain boundary (SGB) networks which greatly enhances the compositional homogeneity and growth yield. SGB networks also host defect centers responsible for charge trapping, hence their reduced concentration ensures minimized charge trapping. Indeed, CZTS single crystals have shown remarkable improvement in electron charge transport properties and energy resolution over CZT detectors. However, our studies have found that the overall charge transport in CZTS is still limited by the hole trapping. In this article, we systematically review the advances in the CZTS growth techniques, its performance as room-temperature radiation detector, and the role of defects and their passivation studies needed to improve the performance of CZTS detectors further.
