Sequence and structural implications of a bovine corneal keratan sulfate proteoglycan core protein. Protein 37B represents bovine lumican and proteins 37A and 25 are unique

Amino acid sequence from tryptic peptides of three different bovine corneal keratan sulfate proteoglycan (KSPG) core proteins (designated 37A, 37B, and 25) showed similarities to the sequence of a chicken KSPG core protein lumican. Bovine lumican cDNA was isolated from a bovine corneal expression library by screening with chicken lumican cDNA. The bovine cDNA codes for a 342-amino acid protein, M(r) 38,712, containing amino acid sequences identified in the 37B KSPG core protein. The bovine lumican is 68% identical to chicken lumican, with an 83% identity excluding the N-terminal 40 amino acids. Location of 6 cysteine and 4 consensus N-glycosylation sites in the bovine sequence were identical to those in chicken lumican. Bovine lumican had about 50% identity to bovine fibromodulin and 20% identity to bovine decorin and biglycan. About two-thirds of the lumican protein consists of a series of 10 amino acid leucine-rich repeats that occur in regions of calculated high beta-hydrophobic moment, suggesting that the leucine-rich repeats contribute to beta-sheet formation in these proteins. Sequences obtained from 37A and 25 core proteins were absent in bovine lumican, thus predicting a unique primary structure and separate mRNA for each of the three bovine KSPG core proteins.

Transonic Zero-Lift Drag Tests of Four Equivalent-Body-of-Revolution Models Representing Variations of the Convair F-102 Airplane

Four 0.01643-scale equivalent-body-of-revolution models, designed to aid in the evaluation of the relative merits of various degrees of redesign of the existing (1955) Convair F-102 airplane, were launched from the helium gun at Wallops Island, Va., to determine their zero-lift drag at Mach numbers from 0.8 to 1.3. The data are presented with only sufficient analysis to validate their general subsonic level. Estimated values of the friction drag are presented at all Mach numbers to allow a comparison of the pressure drag values alone.

Representing Solar Active Regions with Triangulations

The solar chromosphere consists of three classes which contribute differently to ultraviolet radiation reaching the earth. We describe a data set of solar images, means of segmenting the images into the constituent classes, and novel high-level representation for compact objects based on a triangulation spatial 'membership function'.

Containerless Liquid to Solid Nucleation Pathways in Two Representative Grades of Commercially Available Zirconium

Experimental measurements were conducted to determine the solid metal nucleation pathways of radiatively cooling, molten zirconium spheres of two different commercially available purity grades in a high-vacuum, high-temperature electrostatic levitator. The ensemble distribution of maximum undercooling temperatures was interpreted using Poisson statistics to determine the temperature dependence of the solid metal nucleation rate. For a sample of nominally 99.95% pure zirconium, the results are consistent with heterogeneous solid metal nucleation either on static catalyst particles at least ~30 nm diameter or on a surface coating. For a sample of nominally 99% pure zirconium, however, it appears that heterogeneous solid metal nucleation occurred either on a polydispersion of ~10 nm (mean diameter) static catalyst particles or on dynamic catalyst particles which precipitated from a solution which became supersaturated as the melt cooled. A quantitative analysis of the compositions of both samples suggests that the catalysts probably consisted of one or more of the following elements: niobium, molybdenum, hafnium, and oxygen.

Airborne RF Measurement System (ARMS) and Analysis of Representative Flight RF Environment

Environmental radio frequency (RF) data over a broad band of frequencies (30 MHz to 1000 MHz) were obtained to evaluate the electromagnetic environment in airspace around several airports. An RF signal measurement system was designed utilizing a spectrum analyzer connected to the NASA Lancair Columbia 300 aircraft's VHF/UHF navigation antenna. This paper presents an overview of the RF measurement system and provides analysis of sample RF signal measurement data. This aircraft installation package and measurement system can be quickly returned to service if needed by future projects requiring measurement of an RF signal environment or exploration of suspected interference situations.

Representing Functions in n Dimensions to Arbitrary Accuracy

A method of approximating a scalar function of n independent variables (where n is a positive integer) to arbitrary accuracy has been developed. This method is expected to be attractive for use in engineering computations in which it is necessary to link global models with local ones or in which it is necessary to interpolate noiseless tabular data that have been computed from analytic functions or numerical models in n-dimensional spaces of design parameters.

Method and apparatus for monitoring dynamic cardiovascular function using n-dimensional representatives of critical functions

A method, system, apparatus and device for the monitoring, diagnosis and evaluation of the state of a dynamic pulmonary system is disclosed. This method and system provides the processing means for receiving sensed and/or simulated data, converting such data into a displayable object format and displaying such objects in a manner such that the interrelationships between the respective variables can be correlated and identified by a user. This invention provides for the rapid cognitive grasp of the overall state of a pulmonary critical function with respect to a dynamic system.

A New Representative for Small-Body Gravity Estimation

One of the options proposed in the 2009 Review of the U. S. Human Spaceflight Plans Committee calls for the consideration of robotic and human missions to asteroids. Beginning in 2000, the NEAR Shoemaker spacecraft inserted into orbit about the asteroid 433 Eros, and studied it for a year before landing. The Hayabusa satellite journeyed to 25143 Itokawa, and operated in a proximity of the asteroid for several months before landing to collect a return sample. Additionally, the DAWN satellite, which was launched in 2007, will explore the dwarf-planet Ceres and the asteroid 4 Vesta in the next three years. These are just several examples of current interests in exploring asteroids. In this paper, we explore an alternative for estimating the gravity field of a small body using observations of an orbiting satellite. Our approach uses two new mathematical tools, the quadratures (on a sphere) invariant under the icosahedral group, and a multiresolution representation of the gravity potential. With the near optimal quadratures on the sphere, we minimize the number of parameters needed to recover a function. Also, instead of estimating the coefficients of the spherical harmonics, the new quadratures allow us to estimate directly the values of the gravity field since they offer an analogue of the Lagrange-type interpolation.

Venting of a Water/Inhibited Propylene Glycol Mixture in a Vacuum Environment-Characterization and Representative Test Results

A planned use of the Orion space vehicle involves its residence at the International Space Station for six months at a time. One concept of operations involves temporarily venting portions of the idle Orion active thermal control system (ATCS) during the docked phase, preventing freezing. The venting would have to be reasonably complete with few, if any, completely filled pockets of frozen liquid. Even if pockets of frozen liquid did not damage the hardware during the freezing process, they could prevent the system from filling completely prior to its reactivation. The venting of single component systems in a space environment has been performed numerous times and is well understood. Local nucleation occurs at warm, relatively massive parts of the system, which creates vapor and forces the bulk liquid out of the system. The remnants of the liquid will freeze, then evaporate over time through local heating. Because the Orion ATCS working fluid is a 50/50 mixture of water and inhibited propylene glycol, its boiling behavior was expected to differ from that of a pure fluid. It was thought that the relatively high vapor pressure water might evaporate preferentially, leaving behind a mixture enriched with the low vapor pressure propylene glycol, which would be vaporization ]resistant. Owing to this concern, a test was developed to compare the evaporation behavior of pure water, a 50/50 mixture of water and inhibited propylene glycol, and inhibited propylene glycol. The test was performed using room temperature fluids in an instrumented thin walled stainless steel vertical tube. The 1 in x 0.035 in wall tube was instrumented with surface thermocouples and encased in closed cell polyurethane foam. Reticulated polyurethane foam was placed inside the tube to reduce the convection currents. A vacuum system connected to the top of the tube set the pressure boundary condition. Tests were run for the three fluids at back pressures ranging from 1 to 18 torr. During each test, the mass of the test article was measured as it changed over time, as was its temperature and backpressure. The tests were successful. Somewhat surprisingly, the results showed that the evaporation behavior of the three fluids had more similarities than differences. The 50/50 mixture evaporated similarly to the pure water - albeit at a slower rate. The test results indicate that our extensive space - based experience with venting of single component fluids can be applied to the problem of Orion ATCS venting as long as the appropriate puts, takes, and caveats are applied.
