The transient oxidation of single crystal NiAl+Zr

The 800 C oxidation of oriented single crystals of Zr doped beta-NiAl was studied using transmission electron microscopy. The oxide phases and metal-oxide orientation relationships were determined to characterize the transient stages of oxidation prior to the transformation to or formation of alpha-Al2O3. On (001) and (012) metal orientations, NiAl2O4 was the first oxide to form followed by delta-Al2O3 which becomes the predominant oxide phase. All oxides were highly epitaxially related to the metal; the orientation relationships being function of parallel cation close-packed directions in the meta and oxide. On (011) and (111) metal orientations, gamma-Al2O3 became the predominant oxide phase rather than delta-Al2O3, indicating a structural stability from the highly epitaxial oxides. The relative concentration of aluminum in the oxide scales increased with time indicating preferential gamma-or delta-Al2O3 growth. The striking feature common to the orientation relationships is the alignment of 100 m and 110 ox directions, believed to result from the minimal 3 percent mismatch between the corresponding (100)m and (110)ox planes.

Constitutive modeling for single crystal superalloys

A crystallographic approach to constitutive modeling of single crystal superalloys is discussed. The approach is based on identifying the active slip planes and slip directions. The shear stresses are computed on each of the slip planes from applied stress components. The slip rate is then computed on each slip system and the microscopic inelastic strain rates are the sum of the slip in the individual slip systems. The constitutive model was implemented in a finite element code using twenty noted isoparametric solid elements. Constants were determined for octahedral and cube slip systems. These constants were then used to predict tension-compression asymmetry and fatigue loops. Other data was used to model the tensile and creep response.

Shock-induced melting and shear banding in single-crystal NaCl

Radiative color temperatures were measured in single-crystal sodium chloride under shock compression parallel to 100-line orientation over a pressure range from 20 to 35 GPa. Color temperatures from 2500 to 4500 K and emittances from 0.003 to 0.3 were determined by fitting observed spectra (450-850 nm) to the Planck greybody radiation law. These data support a heterogeneous shock deformation model of shocked halite in this pressure range. A 2500-K temperature rise, of unknown origin, is observed over the B1-B2 mixed phase region from 25 to 30 GPa. Assuming that shock deformation occurs via yielding in localized planar zones which become melt and the melting temperature at high pressure controls the temperature, it is inferred that the temperature of the B2 fusion curve from 30 to 35 GPa rises from 3200 to 3300 K. The B1-B2-liquid triple point is predicted to be at a temperature of 2250 K and 23.5 GPa.

High-pressure phase diagram and equation of state of solid helium from single-crystal X-ray diffraction to 23.3 GPa

Single-crystal X-ray diffraction measurements have been performed on solid He-4 from 15.6 to 23.3 GPa at 300 K with synchrotron radiation. The diffraction patterns demonstrate that the structure of the solid is hexagonal close packed over this pressure-temperature range, contrary to both the interpretation of high-pressure optical studies and to theoretical predictions. The solid is more compressible than is indicated by equations of state calculated with recently determined helium pair potentials. The results suggest that a significant revision of current views of the phase diagram and energetics of dense solid helium is in order.

Flux creep in Bi2Sr2Ca1Cu2O(8+x) single crystals

Dissipative effects were investigated in Bi2Sr2Ca1Cu2O(8+x) single crystals by critical current and magnetic relaxation measurements. Activation energies for the flux motion were determined from the temperature dependence of the critical current and from the time decay of the zero field cooled and the remanent magnetization. The effective activation energy was found to increase with temperature, in agreement with the existence of a distribution of activation energies (E sub o 20 meV at 4.2 K for H + 10 kOe applied parallel to the c-axis.).

Energy efficient engine high-pressure turbine single crystal vane and blade fabrication technology report

The objective of the High-Pressure Turbine Fabrication Program was to demonstrate the application and feasibility of Pratt & Whitney Aircraft-developed two-piece, single crystal casting and bonding technology on the turbine blade and vane configurations required for the high-pressure turbine in the Energy Efficient Engine. During the first phase of the program, casting feasibility was demonstrated. Several blade and vane halves were made for the bonding trials, plus solid blades and vanes were successfully cast for materials evaluation tests. Specimens exhibited the required microstructure and chemical composition. Bonding feasibility was demonstrated in the second phase of the effort. Bonding yields of 75 percent for the vane and 30 percent for the blade were achieved, and methods for improving these yield percentages were identified. A bond process was established for PWA 1480 single crystal material which incorporated a transient liquid phase interlayer. Bond properties were substantiated and sensitivities determined. Tooling die materials were identified, and an advanced differential thermal expansion tooling concept was incorporated into the bond process.

Design considerations for a Space Shuttle Main Engine turbine blade made of single crystal material

Nonlinear finite-element structural analyses were performed on the first stage high-pressure fuel turbopump blade of the Space Shuttle Main Engine. The analyses examined the structural response and the dynamic characteristics at typical operating conditions. Single crystal material PWA-1480 was considered for the analyses. Structural response and the blade natural frequencies with respect to the crystal orientation were investigated. The analyses were conducted based on typical test stand engine cycle. Influence of combined thermal, aerodynamic, and centrifugal loadings was considered. Results obtained showed that the single crystal secondary orientation effects on the maximum principal stresses are not highly significant.

Flextensional Single Crystal Piezoelectric Actuators for Membrane Deformable Mirrors

Large aperture and light weight space telescopes requires adaptive optics with deformable mirrors capable of large amplitude aberration corrections at a broad temperature range for space applications including NASA missions such as SAFIR, TPF, Con-X, etc. The single crystal piezoelectric actuators produced at TRS offer large stroke, low hysteresis, and an excellent cryogenic strain response. Specifically, the recently developed low profile, low voltage flextensional single crystal piezoelectric actuators with dimensions of 18 x 5 x 1 mm showed stroke larger than 95 microns under 300 V. Furthermore, flextensional actuator retained approx. 40-50% of its room temperature strain at liquid Nitrogen environment. In this paper, ATILA FEM design of flextensional actuators, actuator fabrication, and characterization results will be presented for the future work on membrane deformable mirror.

Oxygen tracer diffusion in single-crystal alumina

Oxygen tracer diffusion coefficients are determined in single-crystal alumina samples with differing dopant levels using the gas-exchange technique. The diffusion direction is parallel to the c-axis and the ambient PO2 is 1 atm (100,000 Pa) for all experiments except a single run with a low PO2, approximately 10 to the -15th atm (10 to the -10th Pa) produced by a CO/CO2 mixture. The diffusion is insensitive to both impurities and ambient PO2. The insensitivities are discussed in terms of point-defect clustering. Prior tracer studies are compared and discussed.

Single Crystal Rhombohedral Epitaxy of Sige on Sapphire at 450.Degree. C.-500.Degree. C. Substrate Temperatures

Various embodiments may provide a low temperature (i.e., less than 850° C.) method of Silicon-Germanium (SiGe) on sapphire (Al2O3) (SiGe/sapphire) growth that may produce a single crystal film with less thermal loading effort to the substrate than conventional high temperature (i.e., temperatures above 850° C.) methods. The various embodiments may alleviate the thermal loading requirement of the substrate, which in conventional high temperature (i.e., temperatures above 850° C.) methods had surface temperatures within the range of 850° C.-900° C. The various embodiments may provide a new thermal loading requirement of the sapphire substrate for growing single crystal SiGe on the sapphire substrate in the range of about 450° C. to about 500° C.

Oxygen Tracer Diffusion in LA(z-x) SR(X) CUO(4-y) Single Crystals

The tracer diffusion of O-18 in La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4-y) single crystals (x = 0 to 0.12) has been measured from 400 to 700 C in 1 atm of oxygen using SIMS analysis. Evidence for diffusion by a vacancy mechanism was found at low strontium contents. Oxygen diffusivities for x greater than or = 0.07 were depressed by several orders of magnitude below the diffusivity for undoped La2CuO(4+/-y). The observed effects of strontium doping on oxygen diffusivity are discussed in terms of defect chemical models. The decreasing oxygen diffusivity with increasing strontium was attributed to the ordering of oxygen vacancies at large defect concentrations. A diffusion anisotropy D(sub ab)/D(sub c) of nearly 600 was also found at 500 C.

Orientation and temperature dependence of some mechanical properties of the single-crystal nickel-base superalloy Rene N4. I - Tensile behavior

Single crystal specimens of a nickel-base superalloy with axes near 001, 011, and -112 were tested in tension at room temperature, 760, and 980 C. The alloy Rene N-4, was developed for gas turbine engine blades and has the nominal composition 3.7 Al, 4.2 Ti, 4 Ta, 0.5 Nb, 6 W, 1.5 Mo, 9 Cr, 7.5 Co, balance Ni, (all in weight percent). Analysis of slip band traces, specimen axis rotation, and dislocation Burgers vectors showed that at 760 and 980 C primary cube slip supplanted normal octahedral slip for the -112 line-oriented specimens. The other two orientations, which have lower resolved shear stresses on the cube system, exhibited octahedral slip at all three temperatures. The critical resolved shear stress is considerably greater on the cube system than on the octahedral system at room temperature. However, at 760 and 980 C the critical resolved shear stresses on the two systems are about the same. While the room temperature and 980 C yield strengths for the two orientations exhibiting octahedral slip could be rationalized on the basis of resolved shear stress, those at 760 C could not. Such violations of Schmid's law have previously been observed in other superalloys and single phase gamma-prime.
