Deep Space Atomic Clock Technology Demonstration Mission Onboard Navigation Analog Experiment

The timing and frequency stability provided by the Deep Space Atomic Clock (DSAC) is on par with the Deep Space Network’s ground clocks, and will enable one-way radiometric measurements with accuracy equivalent to current two-way tracking data. A demonstration unit of the clock will be launched into low Earth orbit in late 2016/early 2017 for the purpose of validating DSAC’s performance in the space environment. GPS data collected throughout the mission will be utilized not only for precise clock estimation, but also as a proxy for deep space tracking data. Through careful processing of GPS Doppler data and limited modeling fidelity representative of onboard capabilities, onboard orbit solutions can be compared to higher-fidelity ground solutions, demonstrating DSAC’s viability as an onboard navigation instrument in conditions typical for a low altitude Mars orbiter.

Airspace Technology Demonstration 2 (ATD-2): Simulation and Modeling Used in Surface Analysis

This presentation describes how the fast-time simualtion and modeling techniques are used in the development of ATD-2 system, especially for surface traffic data anlaysis. This presentation will answer the following questions: What analytical results are most important to communicate to Industry from ATD-2 simulation? What fast-time simulations are currently in the works, including EOBT quality impact study and benefits/costs assessment of ATD-2?

Air Traffic Management Technology Demonstration-1 (ATD-1) Avionics Phase 2 Flight Test Training for Interval Management

Prior to the successful flight test validation of a new avionics prototype, participants from Boeing, Honeywell, and United Airlines underwent group training at NASA Langley Research Center. New prototype software for an algorithm which enables greater efficiency in high-density airspace, called Interval Management, was to be incorporated into Electronic Flight Bags and placed in the cockpit for pilot usage. The goals of the training were to teach the flight test pilots how to operate the new software, establish techniques to simultaneously position three aircraft prior to each test scenario, and ensure a common communication protocol among team members when coordinating the position of aircraft for the next scenario. The multi-tiered interactive training regimen consisted of a process that continually built upon previous foundational material. The primary learning elements were 1) a portable computer-based trainer that was provided to the pilots prior to classroom training sessions, 2) classroom learning, 3) full mock-up simulator training, and 4) refresher training just prior to the flight test. Each part of the regimen was designed to repeat and build upon the previous element. The purpose of this Technical Memorandum is to inform the aviation industry how flight training for Interval Management was conducted at Langley Research Center in order to reduce overall development costs of future Interval Management training programs. Secondly, the paper provides insight regarding the decision-making process when attempting to conduct a flight test.

Technology Demonstration Mission (TDM) Evolvable Cryogenics (eCryo) Project: Structural Heat Intercept, Insulation, and Vibration Evaluation Rig (SHIIVER) - Test Plan

The initial test of the SHIIVER system includes multilayer insulation and vapor cooled structure. Testing will occur in the In-Space Propulsion Facility (thermal/vacuum) and RATF (acoustic) facilities at Plum Brook Station in Sandusky Ohio. The testing will demonstrate the performance benefits of multilayer insulation and vapor based heat intercept on a “large scale” test article in a manner befitting large upper stages.
