Development of a flow visualization apparatus

The use of an optical flow visualization device for studying convection flow patterns was investigated. The investigation considered use of a shadowgraph, schlieren and other means for visualizing the flow. A laboratory model was set up to provide data on the proper optics and photography procedures to best visualize the flow. A preliminary design of a flow visualization system is provided as a result of the study. Recommendations are given for a flight test program utilizing the flow visualization apparatus.

Analytic solution for low thrust out of ecliptic mission design

Description of an analytic trajectory solution for low thrust out of ecliptic mission design based on the two-variable asymptotic expansion technique. A practical steering program utilizing normal thrusting symmetrical about the nodes is assumed. A two-term expansion yields an essentially exact solution of the problem which is in a form suitable for evaluation on small desk-top computers. It is shown that for a circular base orbit at 1 AU, a 15-kw solar electric system with a specific impulse of 3000 sec is capable of delivering an 1100-kg net payload to a heliographic latitude of about 63 deg.

A study of air-to-ground sound propagation using an instrumented meteorological tower

The results of an exploratory NASA study, leading to a better understanding of the effects of meteorological conditions on the propagation of aircraft noise, are reported. The experimental program utilized a known sound source fixed atop an instrumented meteorological tower. The basic experimental scheme consisted of measuring the amplitude of sound radiated toward the ground along a line of microphones fixed to a tower guy wire. Experimental results show the feasibility of this approach in the acquisition of data indicating the variations encountered in the time-averaged and instantaneous amplitudes of propagated sound. The investigation included a consideration of ground reflections, a comparison of measured attenuations with predicted atmospheric absorption losses, and an evaluation of the amplitude fluctuations of recorded sound pressures.

Vibration simulator studies for the development of passenger ride comfort criteria

A test program to determine the total discomfort associated with vehicle vibration is described. The program utilizes a three-degree-of-freedom vibration simulator to determine the effects of multifrequency and multiaxis vibration inputs. The approach to multifrequency vibration includes a separate consideration of the discomfort associated with each frequency component or band of the total spectrum and a subsequent empirical weighting of the discomfort components of these frequency bands when in various random combinations. The results are in the form of equal discomfort curves that specify the discomfort associated with discrete frequencies between 1 and 30 Hz and different acceleration levels. These results provide detailed information of the human discomfort response to increases in acceleration level for each frequency investigated. More importantly, the results provide a method for adding the discomfort associated with separate frequencies to give a total typification of the discomfort of a random spectrum of vibration.

INPUTB: A thermal/structural data interface program for 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional interpolation

A computer program (INPUTB) for interpolation in both space and time, and based on a linear interpolation scheme using simplex spatial regions is described. The program was developed to provide data interfacing between the output from thermal analyzers and the input to the BOPACE 3-D program. The INPUTB interpolator is of a general nature and could be used for other tasks. The INPUTB program utilizes temperature values which are given at some sequence of time for a list of strategically located thermal nodes. It operates on these values by performing a double interpolation to provide temperature values at another desired sequence of times for a list of structural nodes.

Viking mission support

Deep Space Network support for the four Viking spacecraft during October and November 1976 is summarized. The period covers the last portion of the prime mission which officially terminated on 15 November 1976 and the start of the Viking extended mission on that date. November also covered the Mars-Sun-Earth superior conjunction period with the rapid degradation of RF link performance resulting in the tapering off and termination of telemetry data coincident with a rapid increase in radio science experiment activity. The various radio science experiments are described in detail and the computer aided countdown program utilized by the tracking stations during the Viking mission is also described.

System design for the digitally implemented communications experiment /DICE/

Full-duplex digital television providing a teleconference capability is to be evaluated in an experimental program utilizing the Communications Technology Satellite. The digitally implemented communications experiment employs a QPSK modulator-demodulator capable of operation over a wide range of bit rates. In addition to simultaneous data transmission (used for digital high-speed facsimiles and remote computer terminals), voice transmission through four-to-one compression will be studied.

The role of thermal energy storage in industrial energy conservation

Thermal Energy Storage for Industrial Applications is a major thrust of the Department of Energy's Thermal Energy Storage Program. Utilizing Thermal Energy Storage (TES) with process or reject heat recovery systems is shown to be extremely beneficial for several applications. Recent system studies resulting from contracts awarded by the Department of Energy (DOE) identified four especially significant industries where TES appears attractive - food processing, paper and pulp, iron and steel, and cement. Potential annual fuel savings with large scale implementation of near term TES systems for these industries is over 9,000,000 bbl of oil. This savings is due to recuperation and storage in the food processing industry, direct fuel substitution in the paper and pulp industry and reduction in electric utility peak fuel use through inplant production of electricity from utilization of reject heat in the steel and cement industries.

Core compressor exit stage study. Volume 2: Data and performance report for the baseline configuration

The objective of the program is to develop rear stage blading designs that have lower losses in their endwall boundary layer regions. The overall technical approach in this efficiency improvement program utilized General Electric's Low Speed Research Compressor as the principal investigative tool. Tests were conducted in two ways: using four identical stages of blading so that test data would be obtained in a true multistage environment and using a single stage of blading so that comparison with the multistage test results could be made.
