Web Coverage Service Challenges for NASA's Earth Science Data

In an effort to ensure that data in NASA's Earth Observing System Data and Information System (EOSDIS) is available to a wide variety of users through the tools of their choice, NASA continues to focus on exposing data and services using standards based protocols. Specifically, this work has focused recently on the Web Coverage Service (WCS). Experience has been gained in data delivery via GetCoverage requests, starting out with WCS v1.1.1. The pros and cons of both the version itself and different implementation approaches will be shared during this session. Additionally, due to limitations with WCS v1.1.1 ability to work with NASA's Earth science data, this session will also discuss the benefit of migrating to WCS 2.0.1 with EO-x to enrich this capability to meet a wide range of anticipated user's needs This will enable subsetting and various types of data transformations to be performed on a variety of EOS data sets.

DFAT: A web-based toolkit for estimating demand flexibility in building-to-grid integration

Demand Flexibility Assessment Tool (DFAT) is an open source web-based tool that estimates the demand flexibility potential of common control strategies in commercial buildings. The toolkit features a demand flexibility estimation tool that contains two calculators, basic and advanced, based on the level of input of customer data. The basic version calculates demand shed metrics for the control strategy “global temperature adjustment” and “cycle on/off compressors” using customer building information, local weather data, and electrical meter data. The advanced version, which uses detailed HVAC equipment data, calculates demand flexibility metrics for control strategies such as static pressure reset, global temperature adjustment, and cycle on/off compressors. In addition to the demand flexibility estimation tool, this toolkit offers a benchmarking tool that helps facility operators, aggregators, and utility resource managers assess demand flexibility opportunities, quantify/verify performance, and compare their performance against that of their peers.

nmRanalysis: An Open-Source Web Application for Semi-automated NMR Metabolite Profiling

Though data acquisition and initial signal pre-processing of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra have achieved high degrees of automation, downstream processing - specifically the profiling of spectra - has bottlenecked the overall NMR analysis workflow. Several efforts have been made to mitigate this bottleneck, but these solutions often trade an increase in automation for limitations elsewhere. Here, in this technical note, we introduce nmRanalysis, a user-friendly web-application that integrates the strengths of existing profiling tools for a more automated profiling workflow. nmRa-nalysis additionally incorporates novel features, including a machine-learning-driven recommender system for me-tabolite identification, further increasing the utility of nmRanalysis over the individual tools that it incorporates.

MODE: A Web Application for Interactive Visualization and Exploration of Omics Data

Studies generating transcriptomics, proteomics, lipidomics, and metabolomics (colloquially referred to as “omics”) data allow researchers to find biomarkers or molecular targets, or understand complex biological structures and functions by identifying changes in biomolecule abundance and expression between experimental conditions. Omics data is multi-dimensional and oftentimes summarization techniques such as principal component analysis (PCA) are used to identify high-level patterns in data. Though useful, these summaries don’t allow exploration of detailed patterns in omics data that may have biological relevance. The use of interactive HTML displays with plots allows researchers to interact with omics data at a detailed level, but building these displays requires significant coding expertise. To overcome this barrier, the software MODE was built to empower users to build their own interactive HTML displays to support scientific discovery. These displays are easily shareable, do not depend on a specific operating system, and allow users to effortlessly sort and filter plots by categorical or numerical variables. MODE allows users to build and share these displays with several options for plot design and meta selection. In conclusion, the MODE web application and its capabilities are presented and then demonstrated on lipidomics data from a leaf wounding study.

On the relationship between the cosmic web and the alignment of galaxies and AGN jets

ABSTRACT The impact of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) on the evolution of galaxies explains the steep decrease in the number density of the most massive galaxies in the Universe. However, the fuelling of the AGN and the efficiency of this feedback largely depend on their environment. We use data from the Low Frequency Array Two-metre Sky Survey Data Release 2 (DR2), the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument Legacy Imaging Surveys, and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey DR12 to make the first study of the orientations of radio jets and their optical counterpart in relation to the cosmic web environment. We find that close to filaments ($\lesssim \!\! 11 \ \rm Mpc$), galaxies tend to have their optical major axes aligned with the nearest filaments. On the other hand, radio jets, which are generally aligned perpendicularly to the optical major axis of the host galaxy, show more randomized orientations with respect to host galaxies within ${\lesssim} 8 \, \rm Mpc$ of filaments. These results support the scenario that massive galaxies in cosmic filaments grow by numerous mergers directed along the orientation of the filaments while experiencing chaotic accretion of gas on to the central black hole. The AGN-driven jets consequently have a strong impact preferentially along the minor axes of dark matter haloes within filaments. We discuss the implications of these results for large-scale radio jet alignments, intrinsic alignments between galaxies, and the azimuthal anisotropy of the distribution of circumgalactic medium and anisotropic quenching.

Three‐trophic level food webs support the safety of a biocontrol agent 3 years after release

Biological control (biocontrol) is a powerful tool for managing invasive alien species and assisting the restoration of native ecosystems. Rigorous post‐release monitoring of biocontrol agents is critical to evaluate the success of biocontrol programs; however, this is still rarely implemented. Here, we combined the use of species interaction networks with a Before‐After Control‐Impact design to evaluate the target and non‐target, direct and indirect effects of the Australian gall wasp Trichilogaster acaciaelongifoliae , released to control the invasive plant Acacia longifolia in Portugal. We compared the structure of plant‐galling insect‐parasitoid food webs before and 3 years after the release of the biocontrol agent. Exhaustive sampling did not detect any non‐target effects, either direct (on non‐target plants) or indirect (on other galling insects via shared plants). Additionally, no significant changes were detected in network structure that could be related to the establishment of the biocontrol agent. This study shows that monitoring biocontrol at the community level is possible and that, when carefully planned, biocontrol poses minimal risk of non‐target effects.

T3CO-Go: A web-based dashboard for the Transportation Technology Total Cost of Ownership tool [SWR-25-38]

T3CO-Go is a web-based dashboard with a user interface to modify input assumptions, run the T3CO tool, and visualize results. The dashboard, built using Python, can be run on a local server when installed from PyPI or hosted on the cloud and embedded in a webpage. T3CO-Go allows even non-Python-proficient users to customize their T3CO experience and gain insights from results customized for their analysis purpose. Web-Based Weatherization Assistant Getting Started Guide

This guide provides introductory information on how to get started in using the web-based Weatherization Assistant audit tool and running the National Energy Audit Tool, Manufactured Home Energy Audit, Multifamily Tool for Energy Audits, and Health and Safety Audit. For new users, this guideline also outlines how you can create a client and start an audit for that client. The Weatherization Assistant is a family of advanced audit tools designed specifically to help states and local weatherization agencies implement the US Department of Energy (DOE) Weatherization Assistance Program. The Weatherization Assistant is developed and maintained by DOE’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). It applies engineering and economic calculations to assist states and agencies in selecting energy-efficient retrofit measures that meet government criteria for cost effectiveness and that can be installed in homes of low-income families enrolled in the program. The Weatherization Assistant can be used to select and rank measures for individual houses, or to establish a priority list of weatherization measures for nearly identical housing types.

Dynamic CCS-EJ-SJ Database and Web Application - What's New

At the 2024 FECM/NETL Carbon Management Research Project Review Meeting, within the Carbon Transport and Storage Breakout Session 3, the presentation "Dynamic CCS-EJ-SJ Database and Web Application - What's New" highlights the critical tool designed to integrate environmental and social justice considerations into Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) projects. Key features include an interactive dashboard for data access and visualization, which supports stakeholders in making informed decisions regarding CCS implementation, and updated data layers. The latest version enhances data integration and usability, providing a comprehensive resource for assessing the social and environmental impacts of CCS projects. There are 7 categories in the CCS EJSJ v2 database (released 03/31/2024): environmental justice, energy justice, economic justice, social justice, ecosystem assets, clean energy, and infrastructure. Most of the layers within each category have been updated in this version. As compared to the old database, there are 3 new categories in the v2 database: ecosystem assets, clean energy, and infrastructure.

Synchronic Web Digital Identity: Speculations on the Art of the Possible

As search, social media, and artificial intelligence continue to reshape collective knowledge, the preservation of trust on the public infosphere has become a defining challenge of our time. Given the breadth and versatility of adversarial threats, the best—and perhaps only—defense is an equally broad and versatile infrastructure for digital identity. This document discusses the opportunities and implications of building such an infrastructure from the perspective of a national laboratory. The technical foundation for this discussion is the emergence of the Synchronic Web, a Sandia-developed infrastructure for asserting cryptographic provenance at Internet scale. As of the writing of this document, there is ongoing work to develop the underlying technology and apply it to multiple mission-specific domains within Sandia. The primary objective of this document to extend the body of existing work toward the more public-facing domain of digital identity. Our approach depends on a non-standard, but philosophically defensible notion of identity: digital identity is an unbroken sequence of states in a well-defined digital space. From this foundation, we abstractly describe the infrastructural foundations and applied configurations that we expect to underpin future notions of digital identity.

Web-accessible sorption database (Interim Progress Report)

This progress report (Level 4 Milestone Number M4SF-26LL010204053) summarizes research conducted at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) within the Crystalline Host Rock Properties & Processes - LLNL Number SF-26LL01020405. This research is focused on the development of a web-accessible database of sorption data for minerals and rocks (bentonite backfill and crystalline host rock) that are likely to be present in a US hosted repository, including elevated temperature data that are expected in a DPC DGR scenario.

Filaments of the Slime Mold Cosmic Web and How They Affect Galaxy Evolution

Abstract We present a novel approach for identifying cosmic web filaments within theDisPerSEstructure identification framework, using cosmic density field estimates from the Monte Carlo Physarum Machine (MCPM), inspired by the slime mold organism. We apply our method to the IllustrisTNG (TNG100) cosmological simulations and investigate the impact of filaments on galaxies. The MCPM density field is superior to the Delaunay tessellation field estimator in tracing the true underlying matter distribution and allows filaments to be identified with higher fidelity, finding more low-prominence/diffuse filaments. Using our new filament catalogs, we find that ≳90% of galaxies are located within ∼1.5 Mpc of a filamentary spine, with little change in the median star formation activity with distance to the nearest filament. Instead, we uncover a differential effect of the local filament line density, Σ fil (MCPM)—the total MCPM overdensity per unit length along a filament segment—on galaxy formation: most galaxies are quenched and gas-poor near high-line density filaments atz≤ 1. At earlier times, the filamentary environment appears to have no effect on galactic gas supply and quenching. Atz= 0, quenching in log ( M * / M ⊙ ) ≳ 10.5 galaxies is mainly driven by mass, while lower-mass galaxies are significantly affected by the filament line density. Satellites are far more susceptible to filaments than centrals. The local environments of massive halos are not sufficient to account for the effect of filament line density on gas removal and quenching. Our new approach holds great promise for observationally identifying filaments from galaxy surveys such as SDSS and DESI.

JHTDB-wind: a web-accessible large-eddy simulation database of a wind farm with virtual sensor querying

This paper introduces JHTDB-wind (https://turbulence.idies.jhu.edu/datasets/windfarms, last access: 11 November 2025), a publicly accessible database containing large-eddy simulation (LES) data from wind farms. Building on the framework of the Johns Hopkins Turbulence Database (JHTDB), which hosts direct numerical simulation (DNS) and some LES datasets of canonical turbulent flows, JHTDB-wind stores the 4D space–time history of the flow and provides users the ability to access and query the data via a web-based virtual sensor interface. The initial dataset comprises LES results from a large wind farm with 10×6 turbines, modeled using a filtered actuator line method, under conventionally neutral atmospheric conditions. These data comprise 1 h (hour) of flow field data (velocity, pressure, potential temperature deviation, subgrid-scale (SGS) eddy viscosity, and turbine forces, approximately 15 TB (terabytes) and wind turbine data – including both turbine-level operational quantities and blade-level aerodynamic quantities (approximately 1.3 TB) – stored in Zarr and Parquet formats, respectively. Data retrieval is facilitated by the giverny Python package, allowing remote users to query the database in Python or MATLAB (C and Fortran support are available for flow field data). This paper details the simulation setup and demonstrates data access through examples that analyze wind farm flow structures and turbine performance. The framework is extensible to future datasets, including the JHTDB-wind diurnal cycle simulation analyzed in Xiao et al. (2025).

Web belt load measuring instrument has excellent stability

Web belt system measures belt or strap load. It is partially disassembled and installed on an existing belt without cutting or re-threading the belt. A strain gage, installed on one of the support beams, eliminates errors due to uneven loading.
