Hands-On PV Experience (HOPE) Workshop, Final Technical Report FY22-FY24

The Hands-On Photovoltaics Experience, or HOPE, is a one-week school held at NLR each summer to educate graduate student photovoltaic researchers in the fundamentals of photovoltaics (PV) as well as specific cell technologies and measurement & characterization techniques. The program brings students from universities across the U.S. and their faculty advisors to spend a week in an in-depth, intensive program, including hands-on lab experiences in solar cell fabrication and testing. This program is intended to educate the students and increase collaboration among the students, their advising faculty, and staff at NLR. Our survey results consistently indicate high satisfaction with this program and good student outcomes post-HOPE. HOPE is a selective program with a competitive application process and is limited to 12-20 students each year. Keeping the program small enables a high level of interaction among the students and individualized attention from the faculty and staff.

From War to Work: Risks, Challenges, and Evidence-Based Strategies Across the Military Deployment Cycle

This report examines what happens when military service members return from deployment and reenter family life and civilian work. Reintegration is an evolving process shaped by an individual’s military experience and potential combat trauma, family dynamics, and workplace conditions, and it occurs within a broader social context. Reintegration varies widely depending on deployment experiences, the preparedness of families, the stability of home and work environments, and whether a person served on active duty or in the reserves. What emerges consistently across U.S., Israeli, and allied nation studies is the same core insight: Reintegration is deeply individual, often nonlinear, and profoundly influenced by the systems surrounding the returning veteran.

Work With Us to Advance Cybersecurity for the Current and Future Grid

The energy sector is undergoing rapid change. Advanced technologies and controls, digitally connected devices, and a mix of generation sources offer increased energy reliability and security, reduced energy costs, and enhanced grid operations. But they can also carry physical and cybersecurity risks that are not yet fully understood. With deep expertise in advanced energy technologies, the National Laboratory of the Rockies is examining the cybersecurity implications of evolving systems and developing cutting-edge tools, novel approaches, and innovative research capabilities to address sector-wide challenges. Together with our partners, we are working to achieve a more secure, defensible, and reliable grid.
