Current and Future Work on Wound Contamination by Alpha Emitters at Los Alamos [Slides]

Our team calculated ‘clinical decision levels’ at which treatment may be warranted (i.e., bioassay and wound measurements which correspond to specific dose thresholds). The actual risk to the patient corresponding to this dose threshold is uncertain – the CED may not tell the whole story. We recently reviewed LANL medical records to characterize adverse events associated with treatment. Future work should include medical records from other institutions and a review and analysis of data to quantify benefit of treatment with a focus on the question, "What factors predict whether treatment will be beneficial?"

QSE 04-21-2022 ST-11 Alpha Data Report

In the California Industrial General Permit (IGP) 2014-0057-DWQ for storm water monitoring, effective July 1, 2015, there are 21 contaminants that have been assigned NAL (Numeric Action Level) values, both annual and instantaneous. For annual NALs, an exceedance occurs when the average of all analytical results from all samples taken at a facility during a reporting year for a given parameter exceeds an annual NAL value listed in Table 2 of the General Permit. For instantaneous maximum NALs, an exceedance occurs when two or more analytical results from samples taken for any parameter within a reporting year exceed the instantaneous maximum NAL value (for TSS and O&G), or are outside of the instantaneous maximum NAL range (for pH) listed in Table 2.

Developing Component-Specific Prior Distributions for Common Cause Failure Alpha Factors

This report presents the development of component-specific common cause failure (CCF) prior distributions for five component categories: pump, valve, strainer, generator, and other. For ease in comparing these component-specific CCF priors with the 2015 generic CCF priors, the same method used to develop the 2015 generic CCF priors was also employed in this report, along with the same set of failure data (1997–2015) featured in INL/EXT-21-43723. For selected CCF templates, this report also evaluates the effects of applying component-specific priors to CCF parameters.

Application of the Cohn-alpha Method on Bare Highly Enriched Uranium Using Organic Scintillators [Poster]

The prompt neutron decay constant (α), can be used to calculate the lifetime of prompt fission chains within a multiplying system and verify reactor startup and shutdown. We analyze a fast, bare system consisting of highly enriched uranium (93% 235 U) hemisphere shells known as the Measurements of Uranium Subcritical and Critical (MUSiC). We measured the system with a three by-four array of organic scintillators (OSCAR) to obtain the gamma-ray and fast neutron signals. Pulse shape discrimination was used to isolate the neutron time series data. The Cohn-α method was used to estimate α for 3 supercritical measurements of Configurations 8 MUSiC. We use these estimates to linearly extrapolate α at delayed critical. These values can be compared to highly detailed simulations in MCNP6.2.

Alpha-Quartz Plastic Strength Investigation Via Diffraction Experiments on Novaculite Using A D-Dia and Elastic Plastic Self- Consistent Interpretation [Thesis}

X-Ray Tomography. Porosity is commonly measured using mercury injection (MI) or water immersion porosimeter (WIP). Both MI and WIP utilize pressure to fill open voids with mercury or water respectively. A measure of the volume change of the sample is then used to estimate the percentage of open voids. However, for the purpose of rheological study it is important to get an accurate measure of open and closed voids. X-ray tomography has been selected as it offers a three-dimensional view into the sample that can quantify all pores limited only by the voxel size which is in the micron range for this study. Radiographs for tomography were collected at the Material Science and Technology Division at Los Alamos National Lab using the Carl Zeiss Xradio 520 instrument and Scout-and-Scan version 16.1 operating software. Two samples were imaged, the starting material and the deformed sample SiO2_65. 3001 radiographs were taken of the starting material with a 6 second exposure time using a 4x objective lens. The x-ray beam was set to 60 kilovoltage peak (kVp) and 5 watts. 1901 radiographs were taken of SiO2_65 with a 25 second exposure time using a 10x objective lens. The x-ray beam was set to 80 kVp and 7 watts. Radiograph files were analyzed by Brian Patterson using Avizo. Void and inclusion volumes were output by voxel sized (1.03 μm) slices, used to calculate a total percentage volume for the starting material.

Topological Surface and Bulk States in Dirac Semimetal Alpha-Sn Thin Films

Supported by this DOE grant, we made significant advancements in the study and application of topological surface states (TSS) in topological Dirac semimetal (TDS) α-Sn thin films. Our key findings include: (1) the successful growth of TDS α-Sn thin films via sputtering, an industry-friendly technique, on Si and InSb substrates, marking a breakthrough over previous molecular beam epitaxy methods, (2) the demonstration of enhanced damping in adjacent NiFe thin films due to the TSS of α-Sn, (3) the first observation of a strong bilinear magneto-electric resistance (BMER) effect in TDS materials at room temperature, with responses surpassing previous results, (4) the identification of quantum oscillations in α-Sn thin films associated with the TSS, revealing critical quantum transport characteristics such as Berry phase and quantum mobility, (5) the first experimental observation of negative magnetoresistance in α-Sn, and (6) the demonstration of spinorbit torque-driven, field-free magnetization switching in an α-Sn/Ag/CoFeB trilayer, achieving efficiency levels higher than conventional heavy-metal-based structures, highlighting the essential role of TSS in enabling the switching process.

Measurement of the anomalous spin precession frequency $\omega_\alpha$ in the Muon g-2 experiment at Fermilab

The Muon $g-2$ Experiment at Fermilab aims to measure the muon magnetic moment anomaly, $a_{\mu} = (g-2)/2$, with a final accuracy of 0.14 parts per million (ppm). A $3.1$-GeV muon beam is injected into a storage ring of $14\,$m diameter, in the presence of a $1.45\,$T magnetic field. The anomaly $a_\mu$ can be extracted by accurately measuring the anomalous muon spin precession frequency $\omega_a$, based on the arrival time distribution of decay positrons observed by $24$ calorimeters, and the magnetic field. In 2023, the experiment published its second result based on the two datasets Run-2 and Run-3, reaching the unprecedented sensitivity of $0.21\,$ppm --- a factor $\sim2.2$ improvement since its first result published in 2021, based on the first dataset (Run-1). In this paper, we will focus on the measurement of the $\omega_a$ frequency, describing the techniques and major sources of systematic uncertainty in the 2023 publication, and outlining the improvements since the 2021 result. We will also cover the status of the ongoing $\omega_a$ analysis for the last three datasets, collected from 2020 to 2023, along with the projected uncertainties on the final Muon $g-2$ measurement at Fermilab.
