Laser system for monitoring wingtip vortices on runways
Network of laser beams passes over runway to photodetectors on opposite side, magnitude of beam deflection indicates magnitude of density gradient encountered. Visual display of beam deflections affects go, no-go decision for takeoff and landing.
Aerographic and aerocentric coordinates are given for 2061 primary control points on the surface of Mars.
The OMEGA Position Location Experiment (OPLE) was performed in 1967 by the Goddard Space Flight Center in order to demonstrate a position location and data collection system. OMEGA navigation signals were received at a remote site and retransmitted via a synchronous satellite to a ground processing center where data collecting and position determination were performed. Recent technological advances have made it possible to develop an Advanced OPLE System towards a global search and rescue application. This application generated some new problem areas such as the OMEGA lane ambiguity, random access, location accuracy, real-time processing, and size and weight of the Search and Rescue Communications (SARCOM). This experiment demonstrates the feasibility of instantaneous alarm and position location by using a relatively inexpensive, battery operated, three-pound package.
An econometric investigation into the markets for agricultural commodities is summarized. An overview of the effort including the objectives, scope, and architecture of the analysis and the estimation strategy employed is presented. The major empirical results and policy conclusions are set forth. These results and conclusions focus on the economic importance of improved crop forecasts, U.S. exports, and government policy operations. A number of promising avenues of further investigation are suggested.
The GRAN Experiment is designed to prove a world-wide search and rescue (SAR) system utilizing Omega navigation system signals and geo-synchronous satellites. In order to develop a SAR system, the original NASA Omega Position Locating Equipment (OPLE) experiments have been expanded by the Naval Air Test Center, Patuxent River. Specifically, a fourth frequency (10.880 KHz) has been added experimentally to two Omega transmitters. This will increase line of position (LOP) ambiguities from 72 nautical miles to 360 nmi apart. Algorithms have been developed to resolve the 360 nmi ambiguities. During September and October 1974, two series of tests were conducted with Lincoln Experimental Satellite 6 (LES-6) to demonstrate the position locating potential of the four-frequency Omega concept.
By creating a number of market scenarios variations dealing with network types, network sizes, and service price levels were analyzed for their impact on market demand. Each market scenario represents a market demand forecast with results for voice, data, and video service traffic expressed in peak load megabits per second.

An update of the status of ceramic component development of the AGT Programs is presented. Activity on AGTO Program focussed on the following: successful transition from the prototype to engine configuration rotor, investigation of alternate rotor molding techniques, and completion of scroll assemblies. Progress on the Garrett AGT Program was highlighted by the introduction of plastic molding and extrusion to parts which were previously fabricated by slip casting and isopressing respectively.

Research in cognitive science suggests that much of cognition involves the rapid manipulation of complex data structures. However, it is very unclear how this could be realized in neural networks or connectionist systems. A core question is: how could the interconnectivity of items in an abstract-level data structure be neurally encoded? The answer appeals mainly to positional relationships between activity patterns within neural arrays, rather than directly to neural connections in the traditional way. The new method was initially devised to account for abstract symbolic data structures, but it also supports cognitively useful spatial analogue, image-like representations. As the neural model is based on massive, uniform, parallel computations over 2D arrays, the massively parallel processor is a convenient tool for simulation work, although there are complications in using the machine to the fullest advantage. An MPP Pascal simulation program for a small pilot version of the model is running.
How much of the interannual variation in the satellite derived radiation balance can be purely attributed to changes taking place at the land surface, was examined. The role of surface latent heating was examined in relation to its control of the precipitation pattern from one year to the next.
The effects changes in stratospheric ozone concentrations have on photochemical models of the atmosphere are evaluated. The study was spurred by the appearance of excessive stratosphere heating above 40 km in radiative transfer computations. A 20 percent reduction in ozone in the 40-55 m altitude interval would offset the anomalous heating values. Comparisons were made between calculated heating rates and in-situ data that included ozone concentrations. Heating rates decreased 0.4 C/day when clouds were present at the 300 mb level, and increased by 0.3 C/day with clouds at the 80 mb level.
Neural networks have attracted much interest recently, and using parallel architectures to simulate neural networks is a natural and necessary application. The SIMD model of parallel computation is chosen, because systems of this type can be built with large numbers of processing elements. However, such systems are not naturally suited to generalized communication. A method is proposed that allows an implementation of neural network connections on massively parallel SIMD architectures. The key to this system is an algorithm permitting the formation of arbitrary connections between the neurons. A feature is the ability to add new connections quickly. It also has error recovery ability and is robust over a variety of network topologies. Simulations of the general connection system, and its implementation on the Connection Machine, indicate that the time and space requirements are proportional to the product of the average number of connections per neuron and the diameter of the interconnection network.
