Quantifying Polaron Mole Fractions and Interpreting Spectral Changes in Molecularly Doped Conjugated Polymers

Molecular doping of conjugated polymers causes bleaching of the neutral absorbance and results in new polaron absorbance transitions in the mid and near infrared. In this report the concentration dependent changes in the spectra for a series of molecularly doped diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) co-polymers with a series of ultra-high electron affinity cyanotrimethylenecyclopropane-based dopants is analyzed. With these strong dopants the polaron mole fraction (Θ) reaches saturation. Analysis of the full spectrum enables separation of neutral and polaron signals and quantification of the polaron mole fraction using a simple noninteracting site model. The peak ratios for both neutral and polaron peaks change systematically with increasing polaron mole fraction for all measured polymers. Analysis of the spectral changes indicates that the polaron mole fraction can be quantified to within 5%. While the total change in the absorbance spectrum with increasing polaron mole fraction is linear, the lowest energy polaron peak (P1) grows nonlinearly, which indicates increased polarization/delocalization. Molecular doping of polymers that form either H- or J-aggregates shows systematically different spectral changes in the vibronic peak ratios of the neutral spectra and provides insights into the polymer configuration at undoped sites in the film.

The evolution of symbiotic innovation, water, and agricultural supply chains

Abstract The water literature has mainly investigated the diversion and distribution of water from the source to the end users or the utilization of water at the farm level in crop production. This paper presents a supply chain perspective that links the innovation supply chain of water delivery and irrigation with the complete water supply chain to the crop and the crop supply chains. These supply chains are symbiotic. Changes in the demand for crops, agronomic technology, and knowledge about water will modify the water infrastructure, irrigation technology, land‐use and crop production patterns, and the pricing of water and related commodities. The parameters that guide investment in water innovation and the design of the water supply chain depend on political, economic, and technological considerations that have coevolved over time with water and crop systems. Evidence from California and elsewhere supports the findings of the paper.

Individuals with Alzheimer's disease and low tau burden: Characteristics and implications

Abnormal amyloid-beta (Aβ) and tau deposition define Alzheimer's Disease (AD), but non-elevated tau is relatively frequent in patients on the AD pathway. We examined characteristics and regional patterns of 397 Aβ+ unimpaired and impaired individuals with low tau (A+T-) in relation to their higher tau counterparts (A+T+). Seventy-one percent of Aβ+ unimpaired and 42% of impaired Aβ+ individuals were categorized as A+T- based on global tau. In impaired individuals only, A+T- status was associated with older age, male sex, and greater cardiovascular risk. α-synuclein was linked to poorer cognition, particularly when tau was low. Tau burden was most frequently elevated in a common set of temporal regions regardless of T+/T- status. Low tau is relatively common in patients on the AD pathway and is linked to comorbidities that contribute to impairment. These findings have implications for the selection of individuals for Aβ- and tau-modifying therapies.

Positron emission tomography harmonization in the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative: A scalable and rigorous approach to multisite amyloid and tau quantification

Abstract INTRODUCTION A key goal of the Alzheimer's Disease NeuroImaging Initiative (ADNI) positron emission tomography (PET) Core is to harmonize quantification of β‐amyloid (Aβ) and tau PET image data across multiple scanners and tracers. METHODS We developed an analysis pipeline (Berkeley PET Imaging Pipeline, B‐PIP) for ADNI Aβ and tau PET images and applied it to PET data from other multisite studies. Steps include image pre‐processing, refacing, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)/PET co‐registration, visual quality control (QC), quantification of tracer uptake, and standardization of Aβ and tau standardized uptake value ratios (SUVrs) across tracers. RESULTS Measurements from 10,105 cross‐sectional and longitudinal Aβ and tau PET scans acquired in several studies between 2010 and 2024 can be processed, harmonized, and directly merged across tracers and cohorts. DISCUSSION The B‐PIP developed in ADNI is a scalable image harmonization approach used in several observational studies and clinical trials that facilitates rigorous Aβ and tau PET quantification and data sharing. Highlights Quantitative results from ADNI Aβ and tau PET data are generated using a rigorous, scalable image processing pipeline This pipeline has been applied to PET data from several other large, multisite studies and trials Quantitative outcomes are harmonizable across studies and are shared with the scientific community

Kraft black liquor concentration with graphene oxide membranes: Process simulations and technoeconomic analysis

Abstract Black liquor (BL) dewatering by multi‐effect evaporation in the kraft papermaking process is highly energy‐intensive. It was previously shown that graphene oxide (GO) nanofiltration membranes can remove lignin, other organics, and inorganic salts from BL while exhibiting stability in caustic BL conditions. Here, we design and simulate several candidate dewatering processes and evaluate their technoeconomic characteristics. All processes concentrate BL from 15 to 30 wt% solutes while producing aqueous permeate. Two process options were analyzed—option A including “last‐mile” permeate treatment to reduce solutes to 0.2 wt%, and option B excluding this treatment and producing a 3–4 wt% solutes stream. These processes were simulated in custom‐built ASPEN Plus flowsheets interfaced with Microsoft Excel and MATLAB. All processes deliver large (>40%) energy savings. Detailed technoeconomic analysis showed that option A processes are profitable in mills equipped with condensing turbines, but unprofitable with only purchased fuel savings. Option B processes are profitable in both situations, but require the caustic permeate to be utilized in other kraft process units. They are also profitable with electricity generation when operated at smaller scales matching the requirements of other process units. Monte‐Carlo sensitivity analysis shows that Option A can yield median 20‐year NPVs up to ~$10MM and Option B up to ~$25MM. Overall, GO membrane‐based BL dewatering is economically promising, assuming successful slipstream piloting and scale‐up campaigns. It would have immediate sustainability benefits from large energy savings, and broader implications for biorefinery processes due to the ability to fractionate biomass feedstock components under harsh conditions.

Electrochemical Capacitance Traces with Interlayer Spacing in Two‐dimensional Conductive Metal–Organic Frameworks

Abstract Electrically conductive metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising candidates for electrochemical capacitors (EC) for fast energy storage due to their high specific surface areas and potential for redox activity. To maximize energy density, traditional inorganic pseudocapacitors have utilized faradaic processes in addition to double‐layer capacitance. Although conductive MOFs are usually comprised of redox active ligands which allow faradaic reactions upon electrochemical polarization, systematic studies providing deeper understanding of the charge storage processes and structure‐function relationships have been scarce. Here, we investigate the charge storage mechanisms of a series of triazatruxene‐based 2D layered conductive MOFs with variable alkyl functional groups, Ni 3 (HIR 3 ‐TAT) 2 (TAT=triazatruxene; R=H, Et, n ‐Bu, n ‐Pent). Functionalization of the triazatruxene core allows for systematic variation of structural parameters while maintaining in‐plane conjugation between ligands and metals. Specifically, R groups modulate interlayer spacing, which in turn shifts the charge storage mechanism from double‐layer capacitance towards pseudocapacitance, leading to an increase in molar specific capacitance from Ni 3 (HIH 3 ‐TAT) 2 to Ni 3 (HIBu 3 ‐TAT) 2 . Partial exfoliation of Ni 3 (HIBu 3 ‐TAT) 2 renders redox active ligand moieties more accessible, and thus increases the dominance of faradaic processes. Our strategy of controlling charge storage mechanism through tuning the accessibility of redox‐active sites may motivate further design and engineering of electrode materials for EC.

Should I stay or should I flow? An exploration of phase‐separated metallosupramolecular liquid crystal polymers

Abstract Dynamic liquid crystalline polymers (dLCPs) incorporate both liquid crystalline mesogens and dynamic bonds into a single polymeric material. These dual functionalities impart order‐dependent thermo‐responsive mechano‐optical properties and enhanced reprocessability/programmability enabling their use as soft actuators, adaptive adhesives, and damping materials. While many previous works studying dynamic LCPs utilize dynamic covalent bonds, metallosupramolecular bonds provide a modular platform where a series of materials can be accessed from a single polymeric feedstock through the variation of the metal ion used. A series of dLCPs were prepared by the addition of metal salts to a telechelic 2,6‐bisbenzimidazolylpyridine (Bip) ligand endcapped LCP to form metallosupramolecular liquid crystal polymers (MSLCPs). The resulting MSLCPs were found to phase separate into hard and soft phases which aids in their mechanical robustness. Variations of the metal salts used to access these materials allowed for control of the thermomechanical, viscoelastic, and adhesive properties with relaxations that can be tailored independently of the mesogenic transition. This work demonstrates that by accessing phase separation through the incorporation of metallosupramolecular moieties, highly processable yet robust MSLCP materials can be realized. This class of materials opens the door to LCPs with bulk flow behavior that can also be utilized as multi‐level adhesives.

Assessing the physical potential capacity of direct air capture with integrated supply of low-carbon energy sources

Direct Air Capture (DAC) is a negative emission technology that can remove up to 10–20 Gt of CO 2 per year. However, to achieve this potential, DAC systems must be coupled to suitable locally available energy sources and sited near geological storage. Here this study explores the potential of low-carbon energy sources to supply power and heat to the DAC process in a dedicated, self-sufficient system tailored for each energy source. Solar, geothermal, woody biomass, wind, and nuclear energy sources are assessed for their global energy supply potential and possible land use requirements. While the options differ in area requirement and regional efficacy, we estimate that all the regionally specific technologies considered can supply energy to achieve significant removal of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere globally. The amount of energy physically available from solar, offshore wind, and woody biomass converts to a removal potential of 160–971, 45–150, and 2–5 Gt CO 2 /year, respectively. Thus, negative emission targets can be reached by utilizing a moderate fraction of the overall potential of several different low-carbon energy sources for DAC while the magnitude of the potential changes significantly according to the source of energy.

An algorithm for detecting and quantifying disturbance and recovery in high-frequency time series

Determining when a disturbance has occurred, its severity, and when the system recovered, is important to numerous questions in the aquatic sciences. This problem can be conceptualized as the timing and degree of perturbation from a typical state, and when the system returns to that typical state. We present an algorithm for detecting disturbance and recovery designed for high-frequency time series, e.g., data produced by automated sampling devices in instrumented buoys and flux towers. The algorithm quantifies differences in the empirical cumulative distribution functions of moving windows over reference and evaluation periods, and is sensitive to changes in the mean, variance, and higher statistical moments. Tests on simulated data show it accurately identifies disturbance and recovery. Three case studies illustrate the application of our algorithm in different empirical settings. A case study on dissolved oxygen in a Florida, USA estuary following a hurricane identified the disturbance and recovery 73 d later. A case study on air temperature and net ecosystem exchange in the Florida everglades identified cold snaps coinciding with periods of reduced carbon uptake. A case study on rotifer abundance following zebra mussel invasion in the Hudson River, NY showed rotifer collapse following invasion and recovery over a decade later. Methods such as ours can improve understanding response to disturbance and facilitate comparative and synthetic study of disturbance impacts across ecosystems.

Side Chain Dynamics of Poly(norbornene)- g -Poly(propylene oxide) Bottlebrush Polymers

The segmental dynamics of the side chains of poly(norbornene)- g -poly(propylene oxide) (PNB- g -PPO) bottlebrush polymer in comparison to PPO is studied by quasi-elastic neutron scattering. Having experimental time and length scale information simultaneously allows to extract spatial information in addition to relaxation time. Tethering one end of the PPO side chain onto a stiff PNB backbone slows down the segmental relaxation, over the length and time scales investigated. The power law dependence of the relaxation time on the momentum transfer, Q , indicates a more heterogeneous relaxation pattern for the bottlebrush polymer, whereas the linear PPO has less deviations from a homogenous relaxation. Similar conclusions can be drawn from the time dependent mean square displacement, $\langle$ r 2 ( t )$\rangle$, and the non-Gaussian parameter, α 2 ( t ). Herein, the bottlebrush polymer shows a more restricted dynamics, whereas the linear PPO reaches $\langle$ r 2 ( t )$\rangle$∝ t 0.5 at the highest temperature. The deviations from Gaussian behavior are evident at the α 2 ( t ). Both samples show a decaying α 2 ( t ). Finally, the non-Gaussian parameter supports the results from the power law dependence of the relaxation times, with lower α 2 ( t ) values for PPO compared to those for PNB-g-PPO, pointing to less deviations from Gaussian behavior.

Localization of proteins involved in the biogenesis and repair of the photosynthetic apparatus to thylakoid subdomains in Arabidopsis

Abstract Thylakoid membranes in chloroplasts and cyanobacteria harbor the multisubunit protein complexes that catalyze the light reactions of photosynthesis. In plant chloroplasts, the thylakoid membrane system comprises a highly organized network with several subcompartments that differ in composition and morphology: grana stacks, unstacked stromal lamellae, and grana margins at the interface between stacked and unstacked regions. The localization of components of the photosynthetic apparatus among these subcompartments has been well characterized. However, less is known about the localization of proteins involved in the biogenesis and repair of the photosynthetic apparatus, the partitioning of proteins between two recently resolved components of the traditional margin fraction (refined margins and curvature), and the effects of light on these features. In this study, we analyzed the partitioning of numerous thylakoid biogenesis and repair factors among grana, curvature, refined margin, and stromal lamellae fractions of Arabidopsis thylakoid membranes, comparing the results from illuminated and dark‐adapted plants. Several proteins previously shown to localize to a margin fraction partitioned in varying ways among the resolved curvature and refined margin fractions. For example, the ALB3 insertase and FtsH protease involved in photosystem II (PSII) repair were concentrated in the refined margin fraction, whereas TAT translocon subunits and proteins involved in early steps in photosystem assembly were concentrated in the curvature fraction. By contrast, two photosystem assembly factors that facilitate late assembly steps were depleted from the curvature fraction. The enrichment of the PSII subunit OE23/PsbP in the curvature fraction set it apart from other PSII subunits, supporting the previous conjecture that OE23/PsbP assists in PSII biogenesis and/or repair. The PSII assembly factor PAM68 partitioned differently among thylakoid fractions from dark‐adapted plants and illuminated plants and was the only analyzed protein to convincingly do so. These results demonstrate an unanticipated spatial heterogeneity of photosystem biogenesis and repair functions in thylakoid membranes and reveal the curvature fraction to be a focal point of early photosystem biogenesis.

Orbital Hybridization and Magnetic Coupling at Cuprate–Manganite Interfaces Driven by Manganite Doping

Fundamental understanding of interface mechanisms that generate unexpected physical properties in the cuprate/manganite heterostructures is essential for possible applications as spintronic devices. In this study, CaCuO 2 /La 1–x Sr x MnO 3 (CCO/LSMO) superlattices are investigated, where the infinite-layer cuprate CCO does not have apical oxygen for Cu in the Ca-plane so that the Mn–O–Cu superexchange coupling can be only present at the MnO 2 –(La,Sr)O–CuO 2 interface. Two different doping states for the manganites are studied, namely x = 0.1 and x = 0.3, corresponding to the ferromagnetic insulating and ferromagnetic metallic states, respectively, in the manganite phase diagram. Linear and circular dichroism in X-ray absorption by synchrotron radiation at Cu and Mn L-edges clearly demonstrate that in the absence of apical oxygen in the cuprate block, the magnetic coupling between the LSMO and CCO is weakly ferromagnetic when LSMO is metallic, while it is antiferromagnetic when LSMO is insulating, along with an increased Cu 3d(3z 2 –r 2 ) and Mn 3d(3z 2 –r 2 ) orbital occupation. It is proposed that the Mn 3d valence band upward shift driven by the enhancement of Mn 3+ content in the underdoped sample enhances the orbital hybridization. The stronger hybridization at the interface MnO 2 –(La,Sr)O–CuO 2 gives rise to the antiferromagnetic coupling between cuprate and underdoped manganite.

An initial exploration of Bayesian model calibration for estimating the composition of rocks and soils on Mars

The Mars Curiosity rover carries an instrument, ChemCam, designed to measure the composition of surface rocks and soil using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). The measured spectra from this instrument must be analyzed to identify the component elements in the target sample, as well as their relative proportions. This process, which we call disaggregation, is complicated by so-called matrix effects, which describe nonlinear changes in the relative heights of emission lines as an unknown function of composition due to atomic interactions within the LIBS plasma. In this work, we explore the use of the plasma physics code ATOMIC, developed at Los Alamos National Laboratory, for the disaggregation task. ATOMIC has recently been used to model LIBS spectra and can robustly reproduce matrix effects from first principles. The ability of ATOMIC to predict LIBS spectra presents an exciting opportunity to perform disaggregation in a manner not yet tried in the LIBS community, namely via Bayesian model calibration. However, using it directly to solve our inverse problem is computationally intractable due to the large parameter space and the computation time required to produce a single output. Therefore, we also explore the use of emulators as a fast solution for this analysis. We discuss a proof of concept Gaussian process emulator for disaggregating two-element compounds of sodium and copper. The training and test datasets were simulated with ATOMIC using a Latin hypercube design. After testing the performance of the emulator, we successfully recover the composition of 25 test spectra with Bayesian model calibration.

Decoding Antenna Behavior in Metal—Organic Frameworks

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) define a solid-state platform for developing artificial photosystems. Efficient anisotropic exciton migrations in these frameworks entail “antenna behavior” that can power up the distal interior reaction centers (RC), driving charge separation between donor-acceptor pairs. Reminiscent of the natural light-harvesting complex, such processes can achieve high quantum yield by exploiting the vast interior surface of the porous crystallites. It is important to understand the optimum positioning of the RC site relative to the anisotropic exciton migration path within these frameworks. The efficiency of such antenna behavior is probed here through Stern–Volmer (SV) type analysis with a series of node-anchored redox quenchers, ferrocene-carboxylate, ferrocene acetate, and dinitrobenzoate. Decoding various intrinsic processes, this work constructs a revised SV formalism in solid assembly that hosts ultrafast anisotropic exciton migration to account for the intrinsic exciton hopping rate from the extrinsic electron transfer rate, and the dimension of effective quenching. In conclusion, this transformative understanding can be applied to other relevant solid-state assemblies.

A practical approach to using the Genomic Standards Consortium MIxS reporting standard for comparative genomics and metagenomics

Comparative analysis of (meta)genomes necessitates aggregation, integration, and synthesis of well-annotated data using standards. The Genomic Standards Consortium (GSC) collaborates with the research community to develop and maintain the Minimal Information about any (x) Sequence (MIxS) reporting standard for genomic data. To facilitate use of the GSC’s MIxS reporting standard, we provide a description of the structure and terminology, how to navigate ontologies for required terms in MIxS, and demonstrate practical usage through a soil metagenome example.

Combination of the W boson polarization measurements in top quark decays using ATLAS and CMS data at $\sqrt{s} =$ 8 TeV

The combination of measurements of the W boson polarization in top quark decays performed by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations is presented. The measurements are based on proton-proton collision data produced at the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV, and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 20 fb$^{−1}$ for each experiment. The measurements used events containing one lepton and having different jet multiplicities in the final state. The results are quoted as fractions of W bosons with longitudinal (F$_{0}$), left-handed (F$_{L}$), or right-handed (F$_{R}$) polarizations. The resulting combined measurements of the polarization fractions are F$_{0}$ = 0.693 ± 0.014 and F$_{L}$ = 0.315 ± 0.011. The fraction F$_{R}$ is calculated from the unitarity constraint to be F$_{R}$ = −0.008 ± 0.007. These results are in agreement with the standard model predictions at next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics and represent an improvement in precision of 25 (29)% for F$_{0}$ (F$_{L}$) with respect to the most precise single measurement. A limit on anomalous right-handed vector (V$_{R}$), and left- and right-handed tensor (g$_{L}$, g$_{R}$) tWb couplings is set while fixing all others to their standard model values. The allowed regions are [−0.11, 0.16] for V$_{R}$, [−0.08, 0.05] for g$_{L}$, and [−0.04, 0.02] for g$_{R}$, at 95% confidence level. Limits on the corresponding Wilson coefficients are also derived.[graphic not available: see fulltext]
