To-date spacecraft applications and demonstration testing results, and future product development for new molecular adsorber technologies

The use of molecular adsorbers, in order to aid in the reduction of the spacecraft contamination levels, is discussed. Molecular adsorbers are characterized by an extremely large surface area, molecularly-porous substructure, and processing charged sites capable of retaining molecular contaminant species. Molecular adsorbers were applied on two Hubble Space Telescope servicing missions, as well as on the tropical rainfall measuring mission. The use of molecular adsorbers carries the potential for low cost, easy fabrication and integration of reliable means for reducing the contamination level around spacecraft.

Experimental Applications of Automatic Test Markup Language (ATML)

The authors describe challenging use-cases for Automatic Test Markup Language (ATML), and evaluate solutions. The first case uses ATML Test Results to deliver active features to support test procedure development and test flow, and bridging mixed software development environments. The second case examines adding attributes to Systems Modelling Language (SysML) to create a linkage for deriving information from a model to fill in an ATML document set. Both cases are outside the original concept of operations for ATML but are typical when integrating large heterogeneous systems with modular contributions from multiple disciplines.

Bench Scale Heat Pipe and Vapor Chamber Testing for Space Applications

NASA’s space missions demand better and more efficient carbon dioxide removal systems. wo challenges present themselves in improving the state of the art pellet adsorption beds: power minimization and uniform heating for carbon dioxide desorption. Titanium heat pipes and vapor chambers were found to be excellent candidates in solving these problems because of their passive heating nature, tolerance to high temperatures, and capability of direct implementation into these adsorbent beds. This research work compares these different titanium heat pipes (HPs) and vapor chambers (VPs).

Assessment of Free-Space Lasercomm for DOD's T and E Applications

For test and evaluation of airplanes, it is desirable to telemeter large volumes of data to the ground. This telemetry has generally utilized W communication systems, which have relatively low data rates, and, due to limited spectrum availability, imposes limitations on the number of simultaneous communications in a given region. Appropriate application of optical communication technology is expected to provide higher data rate capability without the spectrum limitations of W systems, facilitating simultaneous telemetry of more data from a greater number of aircraft. This paper reviews our recent brief study to assess the insertion of free space lasercom to DOD Test and Evaluation applications.

Space Telecommunications Radio System (STRS) Compliance Testing

The Space Telecommunications Radio System (STRS) defines an open architecture for software defined radios. This document describes the testing methodology to aid in determining the degree of compliance to the STRS architecture. Non-compliances are reported to the software and hardware developers as well as the NASA project manager so that any non-compliances may be fixed or waivers issued. Since the software developers may be divided into those that provide the operating environment including the operating system and STRS infrastructure (OE) and those that supply the waveform applications, the tests are divided accordingly. The static tests are also divided by the availability of an automated tool that determines whether the source code and configuration files contain the appropriate items. Thus, there are six separate step-by-step test procedures described as well as the corresponding requirements that they test. The six types of STRS compliance tests are: STRS application automated testing, STRS infrastructure automated testing, STRS infrastructure testing by compiling WFCCN with the infrastructure, STRS configuration file testing, STRS application manual code testing, and STRS infrastructure manual code testing. Examples of the input and output of the scripts are shown in the appendices as well as more specific information about what to configure and test in WFCCN for non-compliance. In addition, each STRS requirement is listed and the type of testing briefly described. Attached is also a set of guidelines on what to look for in addition to the requirements to aid in the document review process.

Case Studies for the Statistical Design of Experiments Applied to Powered Rotor Wind Tunnel Tests

The application of statistical Design of Experiments (DOE) to helicopter wind tunnel testing was explored during two powered rotor wind tunnel entries during the summers of 2012 and 2013. These tests were performed jointly by the U.S. Army Aviation Development Directorate Joint Research Program Office and NASA Rotary Wing Project Office, currently the Revolutionary Vertical Lift Project, at NASA Langley Research Center located in Hampton, Virginia. Both entries were conducted in the 14- by 22-Foot Subsonic Tunnel with a small portion of the overall tests devoted to developing case studies of the DOE approach as it applies to powered rotor testing. A 16-47 times reduction in the number of data points required was estimated by comparing the DOE approach to conventional testing methods. The average error for the DOE surface response model for the OH-58F test was 0.95 percent and 4.06 percent for drag and download, respectively. The DOE surface response model of the Active Flow Control test captured the drag within 4.1 percent of measured data. The operational differences between the two testing approaches are identified, but did not prevent the safe operation of the powered rotor model throughout the DOE test matrices.

Interim solar cell testing procedures for terrestrial applications

An interim draft of a set of test procedures, developed by NASA/ERDA, for the manufacture of solar cells is introduced. This version includes procedures for cell testing both outdoors in natural sunlight and indoors in simulated sunlight, a description of the necessary apparatus and equipment, the calibration and use of standard solar cells, and a proposed air-mass-two (AM2) solar spectrum.

Performance Evaluation of a Data Validation System

Online data validation is a performance-enhancing component of modern control and health management systems. It is essential that performance of the data validation system be verified prior to its use in a control and health management system. A new Data Qualification and Validation (DQV) Test-bed application was developed to provide a systematic test environment for this performance verification. The DQV Test-bed was used to evaluate a model-based data validation package known as the Data Quality Validation Studio (DQVS). DQVS was employed as the primary data validation component of a rocket engine health management (EHM) system developed under NASA's NGLT (Next Generation Launch Technology) program. In this paper, the DQVS and DQV Test-bed software applications are described, and the DQV Test-bed verification procedure for this EHM system application is presented. Test-bed results are summarized and implications for EHM system performance improvements are discussed.

Cassini spacecraft and instrument force limited vibration testing

The application of force limiting to spacecraft equipment is illustrated with the random vibration test of the Cassini radio plasma wave subsystem antenna instrument. Force limiting was used in the vibration tests of most of the instruments and major equipment on the Cassini spacecraft, as well as in the vibration test of the complete flight spacecraft. Force limits for the Cassini instruments and complete spacecraft vibration tests were developed using a semi-empirical method which only requires the acceleration specification and the data from a low level pre-test in order to determine the mass of the test item.

Desktop Application Program to Simulate Cargo-Air-Drop Tests

The DSS Application is a computer program comprising a Windows version of the UNIX-based Decelerator System Simulation (DSS) coupled with an Excel front end. The DSS is an executable code that simulates the dynamics of airdropped cargo from first motion in an aircraft through landing. The bare DSS is difficult to use; the front end makes it easy to use. All inputs to the DSS, control of execution of the DSS, and postprocessing and plotting of outputs are handled in the front end. The front end is graphics-intensive. The Excel software provides the graphical elements without need for additional programming. Categories of input parameters are divided into separate tabbed windows. Pop-up comments describe each parameter. An error-checking software component evaluates combinations of parameters and alerts the user if an error results. Case files can be created from inputs, making it possible to build cases from previous ones. Simulation output is plotted in 16 charts displayed on a separate worksheet, enabling plotting of multiple DSS cases with flight-test data. Variables assigned to each plot can be changed. Selected input parameters can be edited from the plot sheet for quick sensitivity studies.
