LBNF Target Complex Remote Handling

The Long Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) near site at the Fermilab campus in Illinois, USA includes a target complex which houses a 1.5 – 1.8m long graphite neutrino production target, a pre-target baffle, three neutrino focusing horns (A,B,C), and a decay pipe 200m in length leading to an energy absorber / beam dump housed in an adjacent absorber building. The prompt dose rates are such that the Target Hall must be unoccupied while beam is on target. During maintenance periods, the Target Hall can be occupied by trained personnel. However, residual dose rates of activated components necessitate certain operations, such as the annual replacement of the target, be executed remotely by personnel located in a shielded room within the Target Hall. This presentation covers details designed into the infrastructure, equipment, and procedures to allow for successful execution of remote handling operations.

Novel Full-Ceramic Multi-Tubular Membrane Systems for Pre-Combustion CO2 Capture with Simultaneous H2 Production: Fabrication, Performance Testing, and 3D CFD Modeling

Inorganic membranes show promise for application in pre-combustion CO2 capture with simultaneous H2 production. State-of-the-art systems for use under high temperature and pressure conditions consist of multiple membrane tube bundles prepared in a "candle-filter" configuration, in which the membrane tubes are open at one end and sealed at the other. This configuration is used for practical reasons, specifically the need to minimize potential problems due to thermal expansion mismatch, at high temperatures, between the ceramic tube bundle and the steel housing. The primary technical problem with the candle-filter configuration for use in commercial-scale installations is the inability to purge the permeate side (typically the tube side), a feature that is crucial for high H2 recovery. In this study, we fabricated dual-end open, commercial-size ceramic multiple-tube bundles made of zeolite, palladium (Pd), and carbon molecular sieve (CMS) membranes that enable permeate-side (tube-side) purge for gas separation applications. Experimental gas separation data with these membrane bundles under harsh operating conditions (temperatures up to 350 and pressures up to 800 psig), to be presented at the meeting, manifest excellent performance. Parallel to the membrane bundle construction and testing efforts, we have also developed a detailed 3D CFD modeling package using COMSOL Multiphysics software to gain more insight into the effect on the H2 purity and recovery of the detailed geometry of the multi-tubular membrane system, including the number of tubes used, their dimensions, and placement in the bundle, as well as the number, type, and positioning of internal baffles and other flow-enhancement accessories. The CFD package is validated with experimental data from different systems (1-tube, 3-tube, and 19-tube bundles), and shows high accuracy in predicting the experimental results (<5 % error in all cases). The results of our study show that the detailed internal geometry of these multi-tubular membrane systems has a considerable impact on the performance of the system as the flow maldistribution within the shell-side can substantially decrease (>40%) the H2 recovery.

Mk-IV Salt Crystallization Hot Finger Apparatus for Partitioning Used Electrorefiner Salt

Electrorefining is a controlled redox process used to regulate the behavior of ionic species. Through this process, metals can be deposited onto a cathode from an electrolyte solution in a controlled manner. The Mk-IV electrorefiner (Mk-IV ER) at Idaho National Laboratory is an engineering-scale, molten salt-based electrorefining cell that has been used for decades to recover metallic uranium from spent fuel. As a result, highly stable fission product chlorides have accumulated in the electrolyte. This accumulation results in changes to the salt’s properties, such as melting temperature, thermal conductivity, and density, as well as elevated product impurity and fissile materials criticality margin. These factors prompt the need for a salt regeneration process, such as melt-crystallization and species drawdown. This work focuses on providing a conceptual design to regenerate ER salt from used Mk-IV-ER salt in-situ, while minimizing salt waste volumes by concentrating the fission products in a final processed salt heal. We propose using a hot-finger crystallization apparatus design to fractionally crystallize salt in the Mk-IV-ER head space (or baffle space), allowing the collection of solid and liquid fractions. By using a cup-drain design, the used salt will be allowed to slowly solidify on the walls of a stainless-steel cup. The apparatus drain plug will then open to allow the liquid salt phase to drain to a lower cup, effectively separating the liquid phase from the solid phase. Under the hypothesis that the liquid phase salt concentrates the fission products, which is under examination in the accompanying work package, this separation allows the recovered solid salt to be reused while minimizing the high-level salt waste volume of used ER salt.

Machine Learning-Driven Quantification of CO2 Plume Dynamics at Illinois Basin Decatur Project Sites Using Microseismic Data

This study utilizes machine learning to quantify CO2 plume extents by analyzing microseismic data from the Illinois Basin Decatur Project (IBDP). Leveraging a unique dataset of well logs, microseismic records, and CO2 injection metrics, this work aims to predict the temporal evolution of subsurface CO2 saturation plumes. The findings illustrate that machine learning can predict plume dynamics, revealing vertical clustering of microseismic events over distinct time periods within certain proximities to the injection well, consistent with an invasion percolation model. The buoyant CO2 plume partially trapped within sandstone intervals periodically breaches localized barriers or baffles, which act as leaky seals and impede vertical migration until buoyancy overcomes gravity and capillary forces, leading to breakthroughs along vertical zones of weakness. Between different unsupervised clustering techniques, K-Means and DBSCAN were applied and analyzed in detail, where K-means outperformed DBSCAN in this specific study by indicating the combination of the highest Silhouette Score and the lowest Davies–Bouldin Index. The predictive capability of machine learning models in quantifying CO2 saturation plume extension is significant for real-time monitoring and management of CO2 sequestration sites. The models exhibit high accuracy, validated against physical models and injection data from the IBDP, reinforcing the viability of CO2 geological sequestration as a climate change mitigation strategy and enhancing advanced tools for safe management of these operations.

Investigation of the Damping of Liquids in Right-Circular Cylindrical Tanks, Including the Effects of a Time-Variant Liquid Depth

An experimental investigation was conducted to determine the effects of several basic variables upon the damping of the fundamental antisymmetric mode of liquids in right-circular cylindrical tanks without baffles. The variables examined include liquid depth, efflux rate, liquid amplitude, kinematic viscosity, and tank size. The data are presented in dimensionless form and compared with available theory. For the range of variables examined, variations of efflux rate and liquid amplitude were found to have no significant effects on the liquid damping. The following theoretical relationship was found to be adequate for the prediction of the variation of damping with liquid depth, kinematic viscosity, and tank size: [for equation see full text] where v is the kinematic viscosity, R is the cylinder radius, g is the acceleration due to gravity, and h is the liquid depth. However, the constant K was experimentally found in this investigation to have the value 5.23, which is 50 percent higher than the theoretically predicted value.

Fine-particle filter prevents damage to vacuum pumps

A filter system for mechanical pumps is designed with a baffle assembly that rotates in a circulating oil bath which traps destructive particles. This prevents severe damage to the pump and is serviceable for long periods before it requires cleaning.

Uniform reflective films deposited on large surfaces

Specially designed baffle which intercepts varying amounts of the vapor stream from an evaporant source, vacuum deposits films of uniform thickness on large substrates, using a single small area evaporation source. A mirror coated by this method will have a reflectance as high as 82 percent at 1216 angstroms with a variation of only plus/minus 2 percent over the surface.

A method of determining combustion gas flow

Zirconium oxide coating enables the determination of hot gas flow patterns on liquid rocket injector face and baffle surfaces to indicate modifications that will increase performance and improve combustion stability. The coating withstands combustion temperatures and due to the coarse surface and coloring of the coating, shows the hot gas patterns.
