A compact spectroradiometer for solar simulator measurements

Compact spectral irradiance probe has been designed and built which uses wedge filter in conjunction with silicon cell and operational amplifier. Probe is used to monitor spectral energy distribution of solar simulators and other high intensity sources.

Classification of radiating compact stars

A classification of compact stars, depending on the electron distribution in velocity space and the density profiles characterizing their magnetospheric plasma, is proposed. Fast pulsars, such as NP 0532, X-ray sources such as Sco-X1, and slow pulsars are suggested as possible evolutionary stages of similar objects. The heating mechanism of Sco-X1 is discussed in some detail.

High-capacity compact vortex valve for increasing stability of supersonic mixed-compression inlets

A special vortex valve was developed for increasing the stability margin of supersonic jet-engine inlets without the use of moving mechanical parts. A compact valve with high flow capacity and with high gain was obtained by using a unique outer wall in the vortex chamber instead of the usual cylindrical shape. The physical features of the valve are described, and the steady pressure-flow characteristics measured on scale models are given. Procedures are provided for adjusting the operating pressure, flow capacity, and gain through systematic changes in geometry.

Photometry of compact galaxies.

Photometric histories of the N galaxies 3C 390.3 and PKS 0521-36. Four other compact galaxies, Markarian 9, I Zw 92, 2 Zw 136, and III Zw 77 showed no evidence of variability. The photometric histories were obtained from an exhaustive study of those plates of the Harvard collection taken with large aperture cameras. The images of all galaxies reported were indistinguishable from stars due to the camera f-ratios and low surface brightness of the outlying nebulosities of the galaxies. Standard techniques for the study of variable stars are therefore applicable.
