The X-ray system of crystallographic programs for any computer having a PIDGIN FORTRAN compiler

A manual is presented for the use of a library of crystallographic programs. This library, called the X-ray system, is designed to carry out the calculations required to solve the structure of crystals by diffraction techniques. It has been implemented at the University of Maryland on the Univac 1108. It has, however, been developed and run on a variety of machines under various operating systems. It is considered to be an essentially machine independent library of applications programs. The report includes definition of crystallographic computing terms, program descriptions, with some text to show their application to specific crystal problems, detailed card input descriptions, mass storage file structure and some example run streams.

EXFILE: A program for compiling irradiation data on UN and UC fuel pins

A FORTRAN-4 computer program for handling fuel pin data is described. Its main features include standardized output, easy access for data manipulation, and tabulation of important material property data. An additional feature allows simplified preparation of input decks for a fuel swelling computer code (CYGRO-2). Data from over 300 high temperature nitride and carbide based fuel pin irradiations are listed.

Metallurgy: A compilation

A technology utilization program is presented for the dissemination of information on technological developments which have potential utility outside the aerospace and nuclear communities. Discussion is restricted to the effects of hydrogen on a variety of metal alloys, and the mechanical properties of some recently developed alloys. Hydrogen at both low and high pressure is shown to have adverse effects on alloys such as ultrahigh-strength steels, irradiated steels, columbium, inconel alloys, titanium alloys, and certain stainless steels. The mechanical and physical properties of a wide range of alloys, their performance at elevated temperatures, and some of the processes involved in their development are also considered.

A compilation of studies from Atmospheric Variability Experiment (AVE)

Five methods for obtaining the sign of vertical motion at various levels in the atmosphere were investigated to determine which gave the best explanation for areas of rain and no-rain in the southeastern United States during the period February 19-22, 1964. The methods used were the terrain-induced vertical motion, the kinematic method including the terrain effect, the adiabatic method, the omega equation, and the vorticity equation combined with Dines' Compensation Principle. Stability and moisture availability were considered but not as extensively as vertical motion. Values of vertical motion obtained by the kinetic method, including orographic lifting produced the best agreement with the observed areas. When terms in the omega equation were added through use of constant multipliers, results comparable to the adiabatic method were obtained. Without this addition large uncertainties occurred. Maps showing areas where terms of the omega equation would indicate positive vertical motion did not correlate well with the observed rainfall patterns.

Computer programs: Operational and mathematical, a compilation

Several computer programs which are available through the NASA Technology Utilization Program are outlined. Presented are: (1) Computer operational programs which can be applied to resolve procedural problems swiftly and accurately. (2) Mathematical applications for the resolution of problems encountered in numerous industries. Although the functions which these programs perform are not new and similar programs are available in many large computer center libraries, this collection may be of use to centers with limited systems libraries and for instructional purposes for new computer operators.

A compilation and analysis of typical approach and landing data for a simulator study of an externally blown flap STOL aircraft

A piloted simulation study has been made of typical landing approaches with an externally blown flap STOL aircraft to ascertain a realistic dispersion of parameter values at both the flare window and touchdown. The study was performed on a fixed-base simulator using standard cockpit instrumentation. Six levels of stability and control augmentation were tested during a total of 60 approaches (10 at each level). A detached supplement containing computer printouts of the flare-window and touchdown conditions for all 60 runs has been prepared.

Hightip-speed, low-loading transonic fan stage. Part 2: Data compilation

Tests were conducted on a high-tip-speed low-loading transonic fan stage to determine the performance and inlet flow distortion tolerance of the design. Test data were recorded for overall and blade element performance with both uniform and distorted inlet flows. A tabular summary of the data and a representative selection of the computer data reduction sheets are presented.
