2017 National Household Travel Survey - Wisconsin Add-On

The Wisconsin add-on survey supplements the 2017 National Household Travel Survey (NHTS) with additional household samples and detailed travel behavior for an assigned travel day. The Federal Highway Administration and Wisconsin Department of Transportation conducted the survey. The NHTS ran from April 19, 2016, through April 25, 2017. It collected detailed information on travel behavior nationwide, as well as data on the demographic and socioeconomic composition of households. State transportation departments and metropolitan planning agencies had the opportunity to purchase extra household samples as part of the NHTS add-on program. These additional samples, along with national samples collected in the add-on areas, are compiled for use in transportation planning, forecasting, and research. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation participated in the NHTS add-on program and received a total of 11,675 household samples in Wisconsin. (The total number of household samples nationwide is 129,112.)

Foliar element determination from field survey in association with the National Ecological Observatory Network Airborne Observation Platform survey, East River, Colorado 2018

The purpose of this dataset is to support research aimed at understanding the coupling between hydrologic and biogeochemical processes at watershed scale, particularly the relationship between aboveground vegetation characteristics and subsurface soil properties. These data are intended to inform and calibrate models of catchment-scale biogeochemical fluxes, including rock-derived nutrient cycling, and they were procured to address the following questions: (1) What is the distribution of vegetation characteristics across the study catchments? (2) Are foliar concentrations of rock-derived nutrients related to underlying lithology and soil availability, or are these signals masked by biotic nutrient cycling and retention processes? This data package contains foliar elemental data collected during the 2018 National Ecological Observatory Networks (NEON) Airborne Observation Platform (AOP) imaging spectroscopy and lidar surveys in Gunnison County, Colorado. Folair samples were collected across the East River, Washington Gulch, Slate River, and Coal Creek watersheds and contain a mixture of vegetation including meadow, shrub, and tree foliar samples. The samples were processed using aqua regia digestion and analyzed for elemental determination on inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES).The data package includes: (1) raw foliar elemental data files in CSV and PDF formats, (2) quality control certificates in PDF format, and (3) an aggregated CSV file containing all elemental measurements compiled across samples. No specialized software is required to access or use these files.

Fine-Root Ecology Database (FRED): A Global Collection of Root Trait Data with Coincident Site, Vegetation, Edaphic, and Climatic Data, Version 4.

To address the need for a centralized root trait database, we compiled the Fine-Root Ecology Database (FRED) from published and unpublished data sources. We have continued to add to the FRED database since the release of FRED 1.0 in 2017, followed by 2.0 in 2018, and 3.0 in 2021. This new release of FRED 4.0 now has 213,941 observations of 238 root traits, for a combined total of roughly 3.4 million data fields for root traits and ancillary data together. FRED 4.0 has 39.8% more root trait observations than FRED 3.0 and a 34.4% increase in unique data sources. This release of FRED 4.0 also includes significant increases in geographic regions that have long been underrepresented in global datasets, notably in the tropical low latitudes. Ancillary data on associated site, vegetation, edaphic, and climatic conditions from across the globe have also increased concurrently with root trait observations. FRED is focused on fine roots (traditionally defined as roots less than 2 mm in diameter), as coarse roots are studied using different methodology, often at very different scales, and have different traits and trait interpretations. Despite this fine-root focus, FRED accepts data collected from roots of all sizes and contains observations of many root classes including coarse roots. Data collection will continue for the foreseeable future. The FRED4_Entire_Database_2026.csv file is the flat csv data file for FRED 4.0, and the FRED4_dd.csv file is the data dictionary of all columns available in FRED, including column IDs, column names, definitions, and unit (where applicable).

Temperature, Humidity, and Time-Lapse Video Data from the East River Watershed, Water Years 2024 and 2025

This dataset contains time-lapse imagery and distributed measurements of air temperature, relative humidity, dew point, and soil temperature across the East River basin from 3 October 2023 to 8 August 2025. Instruments were deployed at 19 sites as part of the DOE Grant: Seasonal Cycles Unravel Mysteries of Missing Mountain Water organized by Jessica Lundquist (University of Washington), Rosemary Carroll (Desert Research Institute), and Ethan Gutmann (National Center for Atmospheric Research). The data are published to support studies of surface climate or hydrologic processes in complex terrain. Measurements were collected with low-cost data loggers installed 2 m high on evergreen trees or buried just below the soil surface. Time-lapse cameras were deployed at three sites. Imagery from sites AP BONUS and AP5 (Avery Picnic) provides insight into large-scale seasonal snow cover variability. Imagery from site EL2 (Emerald Lake) shows smaller-scale snow patterns across a nearby meadow. Dataset files are organized by site and variable (air measurements, ground measurements, or time-lapse video). Air and ground measurements are packaged in LoggerData.zip, and time-lapse imagery is compiled into short videos stored in TimelapseVideos.zip. File-level metadata contains details for each file included in the dataset. A data dictionary provides units and descriptions for column or row names in all files. The locations metadata file describes site characteristics, locations, and associated GPS methods.
